River: poker meaning explained
The river is the fifth and final community card dealt face up in Texas hold'em and the casino poker games based on it. It comes after the three-card flop and the fourth card, the turn. Once the river is out, every hand is complete, so it decides who wins. With 9 cards that help you, the river improves your hand 19.6% of the time.
Key takeaways
- The river is the fifth community card, dealt after the flop and the turn.
- With 46 unseen cards, a 9-card flush draw hits on the river 9 in 46 times (19.6%).
- In Texas Hold'em Bonus you can add a River bet equal to the Ante before the river is dealt.
- In Casino Hold'em your last decision comes on the flop: the turn and river follow without further betting.

What the river is in poker
Hold'em games deal five shared cards in three stages. First comes the flop, three cards at once; then the turn, a fourth card; and finally the river, the fifth. Each player combines their two hole cards with the five board cards to make their best five-card hand. Because nothing else is dealt after it, the river is the moment a draw either completes or misses. Players say a hand was 'rivered' when the last card turns a losing hand into a winner.
In a live dealing room, the dealer usually discards a burn card before the river. This glossary entry focuses on how the river works in house-banked casino poker, where you play against the dealer rather than other players.
The river in casino poker games
| Game | Betting around the river | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Texas Hold'em Bonus | After the turn you may make a River bet equal to the Ante, then the river is dealt | Wizard of Odds |
| Ultimate Texas Hold'em | If you checked before and after the flop, you bet 1x the Ante after the river or fold | Wizard of Odds |
| Casino Hold'em | You call or fold after the flop; no decision is left for the turn or river | Wizard of Odds |
Wizard of Odds' Texas Hold'em Bonus rules (opens in a new tab) describe the sequence: two hole cards each, the flop, an optional Turn bet, the turn, an optional River bet, then the river. Winning Flop, Turn and River bets pay even money, and a tie pushes them all. In Ultimate Texas Hold'em, per Wizard of Odds' UTH page (opens in a new tab), the river brings your final betting decision if you checked twice: you put in 1x the Ante or fold.
River odds: how often a draw comes in
After the turn you have seen six cards: your two and the four on the board. That leaves 46 unseen cards. The cards that would complete your hand are called outs, and your chance on the river is simply outs divided by 46. In casino poker the dealer's hole cards are unseen too, so they count among the 46.
| Draw | Outs | Chance on the river | Chance on turn or river (from the flop) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flush draw | 9 | 9/46 = 19.6% | 35.0% |
| Open-ended straight draw | 8 | 8/46 = 17.4% | 31.5% |
| Gutshot straight draw | 4 | 4/46 = 8.7% | 16.5% |
- Count your outs: for a flush draw, 13 cards of the suit minus the 4 you can see leaves 9.
- For the river alone, divide by 46: 9 ÷ 46 = 19.6%.
- From the flop, find the chance of missing twice: (38/47) × (37/46) = 65.0%. Subtract from 100% to get 35.0%.
River example in Texas Hold'em Bonus
You play £5 Ante, add the £10 Flop bet and a £5 Turn bet, holding four hearts after the turn. Should you add a £5 River bet? The river completes your flush 19.6% of the time, but the bet wins whenever your final hand beats the dealer's, which can also happen without the flush. The overall game has a 2.037% house edge under Las Vegas rules, according to Wizard of Odds, and the Ante only pays even money with a straight or better; otherwise it pushes. No single river decision changes that long-run cost.
River myths in online poker games
A common complaint is that online games 'always' hit the dealer on the river. In UK-licensed RNG games the cards are drawn by a tested random number generator, and the final card is no more likely to help the dealer than you. Bad river cards feel memorable, which is why they seem common. Our page on how poker hands rank and the probability guide show how to work out your real chances.

Frequently asked questions
What is the river in poker?
It is the fifth and last community card in Texas hold'em and similar games. It is dealt face up after the flop and the turn, and once it lands every player's best five-card hand is complete. In casino games such as Texas Hold'em Bonus you can bet before it arrives. Our casino poker hub explains each hold'em-style game.
Why is it called the river?
Nobody knows for certain. Popular stories link it to riverboat gambling in the American South, but there is no reliable record of where the name began. What matters at the table is its role: it is the final card, so it settles every draw. The flop and the turn are the earlier stages. See Texas Hold'em Bonus for the full deal.
What are the odds of hitting a flush on the river?
With four cards of a suit after the turn, you have 9 outs among 46 unseen cards, so the chance is 9 ÷ 46, or 19.6%. That is a little under 1 in 5. From the flop, with two cards still to come, the chance rises to about 35.0%. Our probability guide explains how to count outs for other hands.
Can you bet on the river in Casino Hold'em?
No. In Casino Hold'em you make one decision, to call 2x the Ante or fold, after seeing the flop. The turn and river are then dealt without further betting, and hands are compared if the dealer qualifies with a pair of fours or better. Texas Hold'em Bonus and Ultimate Texas Hold'em do allow later bets. See Casino Hold'em.
What is the River bet in Texas Hold'em Bonus?
The River bet is an optional bet equal to your Ante, placed after the turn and before the river is dealt. If your final hand beats the dealer's, it pays even money, and a tie pushes. You can also choose to make no River bet and simply see the last card. Wizard of Odds gives the game a 2.037% house edge. See Texas Hold'em Bonus.
Is the river rigged in online casino poker?
No, not at UK-licensed casinos. RNG casino poker games must use random number generators that meet the Gambling Commission's technical standards and are tested by approved test houses. That last card is as likely to help you as the dealer. Remembering painful river cards makes them seem more common than they are. See are online casino games fair?
