How we compare casino games

Every casino games comparison here measures the same things: the rules that differ, the house edge of the main bets, how fast the game runs and what that adds up to in pounds per hour. Then it says who each option suits. A game with a low edge played very fast can cost more per hour than a slower game with a higher edge, so speed matters as much as the percentage.

Figures come from developers’ published rules and RTPs and from standard game maths, checked against Wizard of Odds’ house edge tables (opens in a new tab). Where a rule varies between tables, the comparison says which version it uses.

Small percentages add up. At £10 a bet and 60 bets an hour, European roulette costs about £16.20 an hour on average and American roulette about £31.56, for exactly the same bets on the layout. The edge on side bets and proposition bets is usually far higher than on the main bet, so each comparison looks at those separately: craps’ Any Seven, for instance, carries a 16.67% edge against 1.41% on the Pass line.

UK casino comparisons

Our casino-against-casino pages compare two of the five brands we review on licence holder, welcome offer terms, payment methods, published withdrawal times, app and support, using only what each casino publishes. Coral and Ladbrokes share a licence holder, LC International Limited, which is why the Coral vs Ladbrokes page focuses on the smaller differences between them, while PlayOJO vs Casumo sets a no-wagering spins offer against a 10x deposit match. Offers are for adults aged 18 or over and terms apply; each page quotes them in full.

Frequently asked questions

Is blackjack or roulette better odds?

Blackjack, if you use basic strategy at a table with good rules. A six-deck game with European rules has a house edge around 0.62%, against 2.70% for single-zero roulette. Played by guesswork, blackjack’s edge rises well above that. Roulette needs no decisions, so its cost is predictable. Our blackjack vs roulette comparison works through cost per hour at the same stake.

Why is American roulette worse than European?

Because the extra double-zero pocket gives 38 numbers while the payouts stay the same as on a 37-pocket wheel. That lifts the house edge from 2.70% to 5.26% on most bets, nearly doubling the average cost: £10 a spin costs about 27p on European roulette and 53p on American. Our European vs American roulette page shows the maths.

Are slots or table games cheaper to play?

Table games usually cost less per pound staked, but slots and table games run at different speeds, so compare cost per hour. A 96% RTP slot has a 4% edge, against 2.70% for European roulette and around 1% for baccarat’s Banker bet. UK slots also have stake limits that table games don’t. Our slots vs table games page sets out both.

Is live casino more expensive than RNG games?

Usually the house edge is the same or very close, because live and RNG versions follow similar rules. Live games run more slowly, which tends to lower the cost per hour, while some live variants such as Lightning Roulette change payouts and the RTP. Check each game’s rules screen. Our live casino vs RNG comparison covers the differences.

How do you compare the casinos you review?

We set two casinos side by side on the same published facts: licence holder, offer terms, payment methods, withdrawal times, fees, app and support. We don’t claim to have tested them, and where a casino doesn’t publish something we say so. Each page ends with a verdict for different types of player. See Coral vs PlayOJO for an example and our review method.
