How our slot reviews work
Every slot review on BonusKing starts with the same specification table: developer, RTP, volatility, layout, ways or paylines, max win, release date and main feature, taken from the developer's published figures. Then we explain how the game plays, what its RTP and volatility mean for a modest budget, and how its top prize compares with others. We don't quote hit rates or bonus frequencies from third-party listings, because developers rarely publish them.
Many slots come in several RTP versions, and casinos choose which one to run, so the figure we print is the developer's standard or highest version. Always check the game's help screen at your casino. Our guide to how slots work covers reels, symbols and random number generators, and slot features explains each mechanic.
Slot RTP, volatility and max win: examples from our reviews
RTP is the long-run share of stakes a slot pays back; volatility describes how those returns are spread, from frequent small wins to rare large ones. The two are separate: a high-RTP slot can still be very swingy. Volatility labels are set by each developer and aren't standardised.
| Slot | Developer | RTP | Volatility | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blood Suckers | NetEnt | 98.00% | Low | 1,014× stake |
| Starburst | NetEnt | 96.09% | Low | 500× |
| Big Bass Bonanza | Reel Kingdom | 96.71% | High | 2,100× |
| Gates of Olympus | Pragmatic Play | 96.50% | High | 5,000× |
| Tombstone RIP | Nolimit City | 96.08% (default) | Insane | 300,000× stake |
| Mega Moolah | Games Global | 88.12% before jackpot contribution | Low | Progressive jackpot |
In pounds, a 96% RTP means an average loss of 4% of everything you stake. A hundred 10p spins stake £10 and cost about 40p on average; a hundred £1 spins stake £100 and cost about £4. Real sessions swing far more than that, especially on high-volatility games such as Tombstone RIP compared with a low-volatility classic like Starburst. See slot RTP and slot volatility for worked examples.

How to choose a slot
Decide what matters to you before you look at themes. For a longer session on a small budget, look at low-volatility slots and the highest RTP version available. If you are after a rare big win and accept long dry spells, high-volatility games and jackpot slots fit, though progressive jackpot games often have a lower base RTP. Our how to choose a slot guide puts this into steps, and slot providers and slot themes group the reviews by studio and series.
Ignore claims that a slot is 'due' or pays more at certain times: each spin is independent, as our slot myths page explains.
UK online slot rules
Online slots in Great Britain have their own rules. The maximum stake is £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds (since 21 May 2025), as set out in the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). Since 31 October 2021, slots have no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, a minimum of 2.5 seconds per spin, and no celebrating returns lower than the stake. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. Age checks apply even to demo play. Read more on slot stake limits.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good RTP for a slot?
Many modern slots publish an RTP of around 96%, so anything above that is relatively generous, and some go higher: NetEnt's Blood Suckers lists 98.00%. RTP is a long-run average, so it says little about a single session. Many games have lower versions too, which casinos can choose, so check the help screen. Our list of high RTP slots shows the games we cover with the highest published figures.
Does a higher RTP slot mean I will win more?
Not in any one session. A higher RTP lowers the average cost over a very large number of spins: at £1 a spin, 1,000 spins cost about £40 on average at 96% and £30 at 97%. But volatility decides how results swing in the short run, and any session can finish well above or below the average. See is a higher RTP slot better for examples.
How much can I bet per spin on slots in the UK?
£5 a spin for players aged 25 and over, and £2 a spin for players aged 18 to 24. The £5 limit started on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025. They apply to online slots only, not to table games or live casino, and cover the whole game cycle, so extra stakes within one spin count too. Our slot stake limits page covers the details.
Can you buy bonus rounds on UK slots?
No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. The Commission had found operators offering games where players could pay to skip straight to the bonus, in one case for more than £3,000, and all of them removed the feature. Bonus rounds can still be triggered in normal play. See can you buy bonus rounds on UK slots.
