How casino bonuses work in the UK
Casino bonuses come in two main shapes. Free spins give you a set number of spins at a fixed value on chosen slots, usually after a qualifying deposit or bet. A deposit match adds bonus funds as a percentage of your deposit, which you must play through a set number of times before any winnings from it can be withdrawn. That play-through is the wagering requirement, and it is where most of a bonus’s real cost sits.
The house edge doesn’t pause while you wager. Every pound played on a 96% RTP slot costs about 4p on average, so a bonus is only worth what is left after that cost. Our guide to bonus value works through the sums, and the wagering calculator does them for any offer.

What a bonus costs: a worked example
Take a 50% match on a £200 deposit, which gives £100 of bonus funds. At 10x, you must wager £1,000. On a slot with a 96% RTP, the expected cost of £1,000 of play is £40, so the average value left is about £60, before the swings of a real session. Spin offers work differently: 100 spins at 10p are £10 of stakes, and with no wagering, whatever they win is yours to keep.
Table and live games are often excluded or count for less, so check the game weighting terms before you play anything but slots.
UK casino bonus rules since January 2026
From 19 January 2026, wagering can’t be more than 10 times the bonus under LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1, and offers that mix products, such as a football bet that earns casino spins, are banned. The Commission’s own example: a £10 bonus with 50x wagering needed £500 of play, and the same bonus now needs no more than £100. The Commission’s announcement (opens in a new tab) gives the background, and our page on the 10x wagering cap covers what it means in practice.

Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum wagering on a UK casino bonus?
Ten times the bonus. Since 19 January 2026, Gambling Commission rules stop operators from asking you to play bonus funds through more than 10 times. A £50 bonus can therefore need no more than £500 of wagering. Older offers with 35x or 50x terms can no longer be made to new players in Great Britain. Our 10x wagering cap page explains the rule and how to check an offer against it.
Are free spins really free?
Only once you meet the condition attached. Most free spins need a qualifying deposit or bet first: at Coral, for example, you deposit and bet £10 on slots to get 100 spins at 10p, valid for 7 days. Spins are also tied to chosen games and a fixed value. Our free spins guide covers the terms to check, including expiry and whether winnings carry wagering.
Can I use a casino bonus on blackjack or roulette?
Usually not in full. Table and live games are often excluded from bonus wagering or count for only part of each stake, and the spin offers we cover are for slots only. Always read the game restrictions in the terms before playing. Our answer to using a bonus on blackjack explains why casinos restrict low-edge games.
What does no wagering mean?
It means any winnings from the offer are paid as cash you can withdraw, with no play-through first. PlayOJO’s 80 spins on Big Bass Bonanza, for example, are 10p each with winnings paid in cash, for new UK customers (excluding Northern Ireland) making a first deposit of £10 or more. Our guide to no wagering bonuses compares them with 10x offers.
Should I take a casino bonus at all?
Only if you were going to play anyway and the terms suit how you play. A bonus can stretch a budget, but it comes with conditions such as game limits, a maximum bet and deadlines, and the house edge still applies while you wager. If it would push you to deposit more than planned, skip it. Our guide on whether to take a bonus sets out the questions to ask.
