Speed roulette vs auto roulette

Speed roulette vs auto roulette is a choice of pace rather than odds. Both normally use a single-zero wheel with the same 2.70% house edge, but Evolution's Speed Roulette runs a live dealer round every 25 seconds, while its Auto Roulette spins a dealer-free wheel at a published 60 to 80 games an hour.

Key takeaways

  • On single-zero tables both games carry the same 2.70% house edge on every standard bet.
  • Speed Roulette has a dealer and 25-second rounds; Auto Roulette has no dealer and runs around the clock.
  • More spins per hour means more expected loss per hour at the same stake, so pace is the real cost lever.
  • Speed formats only let you bet while the ball is spinning, so decisions come quickly.
  • Auto Roulette also comes in French and American versions, which change the edge.

Speed roulette vs auto roulette in one minute

If you only remember one thing, make it this: the wheel does not get kinder or harsher between these two games, but your hourly bill does. A single-zero wheel has 37 pockets and pays as if it had 36, which gives the 2.70% roulette house edge whether a croupier launches the ball or a machine does. What changes is how many times that edge is applied to your stake in an hour.

How Speed Roulette works

Evolution's Speed Roulette page (opens in a new tab) describes rounds of 25 seconds from spin to spin, about half the length of its standard live roulette round. To make that work, the betting window is moved: you place chips only while the ball is already circling the wheel, rather than before the croupier spins.

Everything else is ordinary European roulette: numbers 0 to 36, a straight-up bet pays 35 to 1, a split 17 to 1, dozens and columns 2 to 1 and red or black even money. Pragmatic Play runs its own Speed Roulette, which it says averages around 25 seconds a round, along with a Speed Auto Roulette. Our speed roulette guide covers the format in more detail.

How Auto Roulette works

Auto Roulette removes the croupier. Evolution's Auto Roulette page (opens in a new tab) describes a fully automated precision wheel that can run 60 to 80 games an hour, 24 hours a day, in European, French and American versions and at mainstream and VIP limits. It is still a real, physical wheel streamed live; nothing about the result is animated.

A faster sibling, Speed Auto Roulette, runs 2,500 games a day with betting only during the spin. Evolution also builds other games on the same machines: Lightning Roulette's ball is launched by an Auto Roulette wheel, and Instant Roulette links twelve synchronised Auto Roulette wheels that spin almost constantly. See our auto roulette guide for the full picture.

Odds and house edge in speed and auto roulette

On the single-zero versions of both games, every standard bet loses on average 1/37 of the stake, or 2.70%. The Wizard of Odds roulette basics page (opens in a new tab) shows the working for a straight-up bet: it wins 35 units once in 37 spins and loses 1 unit 36 times, a net loss of 1 unit per 37 spins.

The exceptions sit inside Auto Roulette's menu. The American version adds a double zero and raises the edge to 5.26%, and its top-line bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 costs 7.89%. The French version may apply La Partage, which halves losing even-money bets when zero lands and cuts their edge to 1.35%; check the help screen to confirm which rule a given table uses. Our French roulette page explains the rule.

Cost per hour: where speed really matters

Because the edge is identical, pace decides the cost. Expected loss per hour equals stake × house edge × spins per hour. A 25-second Speed Roulette round allows at most 3,600 ÷ 25 = 144 rounds an hour if you play every one. Speed Auto Roulette's 2,500 games a day works out at about 104 an hour. Standard Auto Roulette sits at 60 to 80.

GameSpins an hourCost per spinAverage cost per hour

Speed Auto RouletteAbout 10413.5pAbout £14.06
Speed Roulette (every round)Up to 14413.5pUp to £19.44

So the same £5 bet can cost more than twice as much an hour in a fast game as in a steady one. That is an average; any single hour can land far above or below it. Many players skip rounds in fast games, which lowers the figure, and many find the opposite happens because the next spin is always seconds away. If you prefer the speed, consider a smaller stake so the hourly cost stays where you want it.

Is auto roulette live or RNG?

Auto Roulette is live. The ball is real, the wheel is real and the stream is real-time; only the croupier is missing. That puts it on the live side of the RNG vs live roulette divide, alongside Speed Roulette. An RNG game, such as Evolution's First Person range, produces results from software instead.

The Gambling Commission's technical standard RTS 7 covers both. For physical devices, its guidance says the items that decide the result should not be altered and players should not be able to touch them, and compensated games that adjust results to hit a target are not permitted. Our live roulette guide covers how studios work.

Atmosphere, chat and decision time

Advantages

  • Speed: a croupier to chat with and a studio atmosphere
  • Speed: same rules and payouts as standard live roulette
  • Auto: steadier pace with more time per decision
  • Auto: available around the clock in several wheel types

Drawbacks

  • Speed: betting only during the spin leaves little thinking time
  • Speed: highest spins per hour, so highest hourly cost
  • Auto: no dealer interaction
  • Auto: American version doubles the edge to 5.26%

Neither format suits staking systems. The Martingale system does not change the 2.70% edge in any roulette game, and a fast game simply lets a losing run and its doubling stakes arrive sooner. Past numbers also have no effect on the next spin, however quickly they appear on the results board; our gambler's fallacy page explains why.

How to pick the right speed and auto roulette table

  1. Open the table's help screen and confirm the wheel: single zero, French with La Partage, or double zero.
  2. Note the round length or spins per hour that the game publishes.
  3. Choose a stake by working backwards from the hourly amount you are happy to spend.
  4. Check the betting window, since speed formats close it before the ball settles.
  5. Set a deposit limit and a reality check in your account before you play.
  6. Stop at your planned time or budget, whichever comes first.

UK rules on live roulette speed

Since 17 January 2025, the Gambling Commission's RTS 14 product design standard (opens in a new tab) has required casino games other than slots to allow at least 5 seconds from the start of one game to the next. A 25-second round sits well inside that. Autoplay is banned for all online casino games, live roulette included, though a re-bet button is allowed. You cannot play several games at once through an operator feature, and your net spend and time spent must be on screen in real time.

The £5 and £2 online stake limits apply to reel-based slots only, so they do not cap roulette stakes; table limits are set by the game and casino. More detail is on our game speed rules and UK live casino rules pages.

Verdict: which roulette suits which player

  • You like a croupier and a lively table: Speed Roulette, at a smaller stake to offset the pace.
  • You want calm decisions and late-night access: standard Auto Roulette on a single-zero wheel.
  • You mostly bet red or black: look for a French Auto Roulette table that applies La Partage, if the help screen confirms it.
  • You are tempted by the American wheel: avoid it; the double zero nearly doubles the cost of every bet.

Frequently asked questions

Is speed roulette worse odds than auto roulette?

No, the odds per spin are the same on single-zero versions of both games. Every standard bet carries a 2.70% house edge whether a croupier or a machine spins the ball. Speed Roulette costs more per hour only because it runs more rounds: up to 144 an hour at 25 seconds each, against 60 to 80 for Auto Roulette. Our roulette odds page sets out the chance of every bet.

Is auto roulette rigged?

Auto Roulette at a UK-licensed casino uses a real, automated wheel streamed live, and the Gambling Commission's technical standards forbid compensated games that adjust results. Its guidance on physical devices says the parts that decide a result should not be altered and players should not be able to touch them. The house edge, not any trickery, is what makes the casino money. Read are live casino games rigged? for more.

How long does a round of speed roulette take?

Evolution's Speed Roulette takes about 25 seconds from one spin to the next, roughly half the length of its standard live round. Pragmatic Play says its own Speed Roulette averages around 25 seconds too. To fit that pace, bets are taken only while the ball is spinning. The UK minimum for non-slot games is 5 seconds per game cycle, so these rounds are well above it. See how long does a round of live roulette take?.

Does auto roulette have a dealer?

No, Auto Roulette has no croupier: a fully automated wheel launches the ball and the result is read and settled by the game system. You still watch a real wheel in real time, so it counts as a live game rather than an RNG one. Without a dealer, there is no chat with a croupier, but the table can run around the clock. Our live vs RNG casino games page explains the difference.

Which is cheaper per hour, speed roulette or auto roulette?

Auto Roulette is usually cheaper per hour because it runs fewer spins. At £5 a spin on a single-zero wheel, the average cost is about £8.10 to £10.80 an hour at Auto Roulette's 60 to 80 spins, and up to £19.44 at Speed Roulette's 144. Those are averages from stake × 2.70% × spins, not predictions. Our expected value page shows the method.

Can you play French rules on auto roulette?

Evolution lists French, European and American versions of Auto Roulette. French rules often include La Partage, which returns half a losing even-money bet when zero lands and cuts that bet's edge to 1.35%. Confirm in the table's help screen that the rule applies before relying on it, because inside bets keep the full 2.70% edge either way. Our La Partage guide explains how it works.

Why do live roulette games run at different speeds?

Studios design formats for different players: some want a relaxed table with chat, others want rapid results. Evolution's standard live round is about twice the length of its Speed Roulette round, and Auto Roulette sits somewhere between. Faster games do not change the odds, but they do increase how much you can lose in an hour at the same stake. Read why do live roulette games have different speeds?.

Can I use a bonus on speed or auto roulette?

Usually only with limits, and often not at all. Our partners' offers are slot spins or deposit matches with game restrictions, and live roulette is often excluded or counts for less towards wagering. Always read the full terms before playing a bonus on a table game. 18+ and terms apply. Our guide to wagering requirements explains how game weightings work.
