Any craps: meaning in craps

Any craps is a one-roll bet that the next throw of the dice will total 2, 3 or 12, the three "craps" numbers. It wins 4 times in 36, usually pays 7 to 1, and carries an 11.11% house edge, around eight times the cost of the pass line bet.

Key takeaways

  • Any craps wins on 2, 3 or 12 on the very next roll and loses on everything else.
  • Four of the 36 dice combinations win, so the true odds are 8 to 1 against.
  • The usual 7 to 1 payout gives an 11.11% house edge.
  • £5 a roll for 100 rolls costs about £55.56 on average, against about £7.05 on the pass line.

What the any craps bet is

In craps, the totals 2, 3 and 12 are called craps. On the come-out roll they lose for the pass line bet, which is where the name comes from. Any craps lets you bet that one of them will appear on the next roll. It is one of the proposition bets in the centre of the table, and it is settled in a single throw: win or lose, the bet is over.

This glossary entry shows where the 4 in 36 chance comes from, how the 7 to 1 payout produces an 11.11% edge, and why using any craps to protect a pass line bet adds cost rather than removing it.

Any craps odds: counting the dice

Two dice give 36 equally likely combinations. Only four of them make a craps number, as the table shows.

With 4 winning ways and 32 losing ways, the true odds are 32 to 4, or 8 to 1 against. A fair payout would therefore be 8 to 1. The casino pays 7 to 1, and that one-unit gap is the house's margin.

Any craps payout and house edge

The Wizard of Odds craps house edge table (opens in a new tab) lists any craps at 7 to 1 with an 11.11% house edge. You can check it with plain arithmetic. Bet £1 for 36 rolls covering every combination once: you win £7 four times (£28) and lose £1 thirty-two times (£32), a net loss of £4 over £36 staked, or 4/36 = 11.11%.

Watch the wording on the layout. "7 to 1" means £7 winnings plus your £1 back. If a table says "7 for 1", you get £7 in total including your stake, which is really 6 to 1. The same arithmetic then gives (4 × 6 − 32) / 36 = −8/36, a 22.22% edge.

Pass line and place figures are per bet resolved, as Wizard of Odds' summary table uses. Any craps is a one-roll bet, so every bet resolves immediately.

Using any craps as insurance: the maths

Some players add a small any craps bet on the come-out roll to protect a pass line bet against 2, 3 or 12. It feels like insurance, but it is a separate bet with its own 11.11% edge. Your pass line still costs 1.41%, and every pound on any craps adds 11.11p of expected loss on top. Over many come-out rolls, the hedge makes the combination more expensive, not safer.

  1. Find any craps in the centre of the layout, or in the proposition area of an online game.
  2. Place your chips before the roll (at a land-based table you can ask the stickman to place it).
  3. Check whether the payout is shown as "to 1" or "for 1".
  4. Accept that the bet is settled on the next roll, win or lose.

Where you meet any craps online and live

Any craps is a standard part of the craps layout, so you will usually find it in the proposition area of RNG craps games. Live dice games are a separate category, and Evolution's live craps and dice range (opens in a new tab) shows how varied they are; not every one carries the same bets. Confirm the bet and its payout in the game's help screen. UK rules require at least 5 seconds per game cycle for online casino games other than slots, and autoplay is not allowed. Frequently asked questions

What does any craps mean?

Any craps is a bet that the next roll will be 2, 3 or 12. It is a one-roll proposition bet, so it is decided on a single throw. It wins 4 times in 36 and usually pays 7 to 1, giving the house an 11.11% edge. The name comes from those totals losing for the pass line on the come-out roll. Our craps proposition bets page covers its neighbours.

What are the odds of rolling any craps?

The chance is 4 in 36, or 1 in 9 (11.11%). Two dice give 36 combinations: one makes 2, two make 3 and one makes 12. The other 32 lose the bet, so the true odds are 8 to 1 against. Every roll is independent, so a long gap since the last craps does not make one more likely. Our craps dice odds page lists every total.

What does any craps pay?

Any craps usually pays 7 to 1, so a £5 bet that wins returns £35 in winnings plus your £5 stake. Some layouts quote "7 for 1", which includes your stake and is really 6 to 1, doubling the house edge to 22.22%. Always check the payout in the game rules. Our true odds vs payout odds page explains the to and for wording.

Is any craps a good bet?

It is one of the more expensive bets on the craps table. At 7 to 1 its house edge is 11.11%, against 1.41% for the pass line and 1.36% for don't pass. On £500 of total bets that is an average cost of about £55.56, compared with £7.05 on the pass line. It can still be fun in small amounts. See the worst bets in the casino for comparisons.

Should I use any craps to protect my pass line bet?

The maths says no. Any craps wins when the pass line loses on a come-out 2, 3 or 12, but it is a separate bet with its own 11.11% edge. Adding it does not lower the pass line's 1.41% cost; it adds the hedge's cost on top. Over many rolls you lose more. Our craps strategy page looks at how to keep costs down.

Is any craps the same as the horn bet?

No. Any craps covers 2, 3 and 12 as one bet with a single payout. A horn bet splits your stake across 2, 3, 11 and 12, with each part paid at its own odds, so 11 is included and the payouts differ. Check the game's help screen for horn payouts, as they vary between tables. Our craps how to play guide explains the full layout.
