Chip: meaning in casino games
A casino chip is a token that stands in for cash at a gaming table, worth whatever value the casino prints or assigns to it. You buy chips with money, bet with them and cash them back in at the end. Online games use virtual chips in the same way, picked from a row of values before each round.
Key takeaways
- A chip is a token worth a set amount of money, used for betting at tables.
- Chip colours and designs are set by each casino; there is no single UK colour scheme.
- Roulette call bets are described by chip count: voisins du zéro uses 9 chips, tiers 6, orphelins 5.
- The house edge applies to every chip you bet: £9 on voisins at 2.70% costs about 24p a spin on average.

What a casino chip is
Chips are the currency of the gaming floor. Each one carries a value, and dealers handle bets, payouts and change in chips rather than notes. Some casinos call them cheques. They're quicker to count and stack than cash, harder to fake than paper money, and they keep every bet visible on the layout.
You get chips by buying in at the table or the cashier, and turn them back into money when you cash out. This glossary entry covers physical and online chips, how bets are counted in chips and what each chip really costs.
How chips work in a land-based casino
Each casino sets its own chip designs, colours and denominations, so a colour that means one value in one venue can mean another elsewhere. The printed value is the only safe guide. Chips are normally only cashable at the casino that issued them.
At roulette many casinos also use plain coloured chips with no printed value. Each player gets their own colour, so bets on a crowded layout don't get mixed up, and the value per chip is agreed at the buy-in. These must be exchanged for value chips before you leave the table.
Dealers will "colour up" small chips into larger ones when you leave, and break larger ones into smaller ones when you need to bet a table's minimum bet.
Bets counted in chips: roulette call bets
On European and French wheels, call bets cover sections of the wheel and are named by the number of chips they need. Wizard of Odds on sector bets (opens in a new tab) gives the same unit counts. The table shows the chips per bet and what one spin costs on average at £1 and £2 chips, using the 2.70% single-zero edge.
| Call bet | Numbers covered | Chips | Stake at £1 chips | Average cost per spin at £1 | Average cost per spin at £2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Voisins du zéro | 17 | 9 | £9 | 24p | 49p |
| Tiers du cylindre | 12 | 6 | £6 | 16p | 32p |
| Orphelins | 8 | 5 | £5 | 13.5p | 27p |
| Neighbours (number plus two each side) | 5 | 5 | £5 | 13.5p | 27p |
| Jeu zéro | 7 | 4 | £4 | 11p | 22p |
The average cost is simply stake × 2.70%. Covering more numbers needs more chips but doesn't lower the edge: voisins du zéro wins more often than a single straight-up bet, yet it pays less when it wins. Our voisins du zéro and orphelins pages show where each chip goes.
Chips in online and live casino games
Online and live dealer tables show a chip tray along the bottom of the screen. Placing a bet works like this:
- Choose a chip value from the tray. The lowest chip often matches the table minimum.
- Tap or click the betting area once for each chip you want there.
- Use undo to remove the last chip, or double to double every bet on the layout.
- Wait for the betting timer to end; bets lock when it does.
- After the result, a re-bet button repeats your last bets for the next round if you press it. It isn't autoplay, which UK rules ban.
Since 17 January 2025, casino games other than slots must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle under the Commission's responsible product design standard (RTS 14) (opens in a new tab), and autoplay is banned for all online casino games. Some games, such as Mega Roulette, add bets that place one chip on each number of a selection automatically.
Why the chip doesn't change the odds
A chip is just a unit of money. The chance of winning and the payout are set by the bet, not by the chip's size or colour, so a £25 chip on red has the same house edge as a £1 chip on red. What changes with bigger chips is the money at stake: ten £5 chips on a 2.70% game cost about £1.35 a round on average, against 27p for ten £1 chips. Our roulette odds page lists every bet's probability.
Casinos track what they win as a share of the chips they sell, called the hold. It looks bigger than the house edge because the same chips are bet many times over a session.

Frequently asked questions
What is a chip in a casino?
A chip is a token used instead of cash at a gaming table, each worth a set amount. You buy chips with money, bet with them, and exchange them back for money at the cashier when you leave. Some casinos call them cheques. Our buy-in entry explains how you get chips at a table.
What colour is each casino chip worth?
It depends on the casino. Each venue sets its own colours and denominations, so there is no single British colour code, and the value printed on the chip is what counts. Roulette tables may also use unmarked colour chips, valued when you buy in, to tell players apart. Our casino etiquette guide covers handling chips at the table.
How many chips is a voisins du zéro bet?
Voisins du zéro uses 9 chips to cover 17 numbers around zero: 2 on the 0-2-3 trio, 1 on each of five splits and 2 on a corner. At £1 a chip that is £9 a spin, which costs about 24p a spin on average at the 2.70% single-zero edge. See call bets for the other wheel sections.
Can I take casino chips home?
You can, but they normally only cash in at the casino that issued them, and coloured roulette chips must be swapped at the table before you leave. Most people change chips back into money at the cashier on the way out. Our first visit to a casino guide walks through it.
Does a bigger chip improve my odds?
No. The bet decides the odds and payout, not the chip. A £25 chip on red has exactly the same chance of winning and the same 2.70% edge on a single-zero wheel as a £1 chip. Larger chips just mean more money at stake, so the average loss per round grows in proportion. The expected value page shows the arithmetic.
What is the smallest chip at an online casino?
It varies by game and table, and the smallest chip in the tray often equals the table minimum. Online and live tables show their limits in the game's information panel, so check there before you play. Our answer on the minimum bet on online roulette explains where to find it.
