Game cycle: meaning and UK rules
A game cycle is one complete round of an online casino game, running from the moment you press start until all the money staked is lost or all winnings are made available to you. UK rules use the game cycle to measure slot stake limits, minimum game speeds and the ban on autoplay.
Key takeaways
- The Gambling Commission defines a game cycle as running from the start of a game until all stakes are lost or all winnings are made available.
- Online slots: at least 2.5 seconds between the start of one game cycle and the next (since 31 October 2021).
- Other online casino games: at least 5 seconds per game cycle (since 17 January 2025).
- Slot stake limits of £5 (25 and over) and £2 (18 to 24) apply per game cycle, including extra stakes offered within it.
- Starts
- When you press start
- Ends
- When all stakes are lost or winnings are made available

What a game cycle means
In plain terms, a game cycle is a single round: one spin of a slot, one hand of RNG blackjack, one spin of a roulette wheel. The Gambling Commission’s guidance is more exact. The cycle begins when you start the game and ends only when everything you staked has been lost, or everything you won has been made available for you to collect. Any features or extra decisions in between belong to the same cycle.
That matters for features. A slot bonus round triggered by a spin is part of that spin’s game cycle. A blackjack hand where you double down or split is still one cycle, even though you add money midway. You will find the term in the Remote Technical Standards, and it sits in our casino glossary next to related rule words such as RTS.
UK game cycle rules: speed, autoplay and stake limits
Four sets of UK rules hang off the game cycle. Each date below comes from the Commission’s published standards and guidance, including RTS 14 on responsible product design (opens in a new tab).
| Rule | What it says | Applies to | In force |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autoplay ban (RTS 8C) | Each game cycle must be started individually | Slots, then all online casino games | 31 October 2021 (slots); 17 January 2025 (all) |
| Slot speed (RTS 14D) | At least 2.5 seconds from the start of one game to the next game cycle | Online slots | 31 October 2021 |
| Casino game speed (RTS 14G) | At least 5 seconds per game cycle | Non-slot casino games, including house-banked poker; not peer-to-peer poker or bingo | 17 January 2025 |
| Slot stake limit | £5 per game cycle (25 and over), £2 (18 to 24) | Online slots only | 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 |
The speed rules measure from the start of one game to the start of the next, so a round can finish quicker than five seconds as long as the next one cannot begin early. The Commission’s guidance exempts bonus games that need no extra stake from the time-to-result requirement. More detail is on our pages on game speed rules and the autoplay ban.
Game cycle and the slot stake limit: a worked example
The online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) counts every stake made inside one cycle towards the cap. It gives two examples:
- A customer aged 27 stakes £2 on a spin. Within that same game cycle the game may offer up to £3 more, because the total stays within £5.
- A customer aged 19 stakes £2. The game may offer nothing extra until the cycle ends, because £2 is already the limit for 18 to 24-year-olds.
The guidance does not say whether bonus features triggered inside a cycle count towards the limit, so check the game’s help screen if a slot offers extra stakes mid-round. The limits never apply to roulette, blackjack or other non-slot games. See our full guide to slot stake limits.
What the minimum game cycle means for cost per hour
A minimum cycle puts a ceiling on how many rounds fit into an hour. At 2.5 seconds, a slot can run at most 3,600 ÷ 2.5 = 1,440 cycles an hour; at 5 seconds, a table game can run at most 720. Real play is slower, but the ceiling shows how fast costs can build.
| Game | Stake per cycle | Max cycles per hour | House edge | Average cost at the limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slot, 96% RTP | £0.50 | 1,440 | 4% | £28.80 |
| RNG European roulette | £1 | 720 | 2.70% | £19.44 |
| Live speed roulette, 25-second rounds | £1 | 144 | 2.70% | £3.89 |
Evolution’s Speed Roulette takes about 25 seconds a round, far above the five-second floor. Faster cycles do not change the house edge, but they raise the cost per hour because more of your money passes through the game.
How to spot game cycle rules in an online game
- Press start: if the next round begins on its own, that is not allowed under UK rules.
- Look for the net position and session time on screen, which UK casino games must show in real time.
- Note that you cannot open several games at once; multi-game play is banned for casino products.
- Read the help screen for the RTP and any extra stakes the game can ask for inside a round.

Frequently asked questions
What is a game cycle in online slots?
A game cycle in online slots is one spin, from pressing start until every stake is lost or every win is made available, including any feature that spin triggers. UK rules require at least 2.5 seconds between the start of one cycle and the next, and you must press start each time. Our game design rules page covers the full set of slot rules that use the cycle.
How long must a game cycle last in the UK?
A UK game cycle must allow at least 2.5 seconds on online slots and at least 5 seconds on other online casino games such as roulette and blackjack. The time runs from the start of one game to the start of the next, so a result can appear sooner. The five-second rule began on 17 January 2025. See our page on casino game speed rules for the background.
Does the £5 slot limit apply per spin or per game cycle?
It applies per game cycle, which for most slots means per spin plus anything staked inside that spin. A 27-year-old who stakes £2 can be offered up to £3 more within the same cycle, but not beyond £5 in total. Players aged 18 to 24 are capped at £2. Our guide to the maximum stake on a UK slot has more examples.
Is a blackjack hand with a split one game cycle?
Yes, a blackjack hand stays one game cycle even when you split or double, because the cycle only ends once all stakes are settled. The extra money you add midway belongs to that same round. Slot stake limits do not apply to blackjack, but the five-second minimum and the autoplay ban do. Our blackjack rules page explains when splitting and doubling are allowed.
Why do UK rules care about game cycles?
UK rules use the game cycle because it is the natural unit for limiting speed, stakes and automatic play, which are linked to how fast people can lose money. Shorter cycles mean more rounds per hour and a higher cost per hour at the same house edge. The speed and autoplay rules sit in RTS 14, the standard on responsible product design. Our UK rules hub lists every rule that applies.
Do live casino games have a minimum game cycle?
Yes, live casino games count as non-slot casino games, so the five-second minimum and the autoplay ban apply to them. In practice live rounds take far longer: Evolution’s Speed Roulette runs about 25 seconds a round. A re-bet button is not autoplay, because you still choose to place each bet. Our page on UK rules for live casino explains the details.
