High card in poker and casino games

High card is the lowest-ranking poker hand: five cards with no pair, no straight and no flush, valued by the highest card in it, so A-J-8-5-3 is ‘ace high’. It is also the most common hand you will see, turning up in about half of all five-card deals.

Key takeaways

  • High card means no pair, straight or flush; the top card names the hand.
  • It is dealt in 1,302,540 of 2,598,960 five-card hands (50.1%) and 74.4% of three-card hands.
  • Ties are broken by the next highest card, then the next, down to the fifth.
  • In Three Card Poker the dealer needs queen high to qualify; in Caribbean Stud, ace-king.

What high card means in poker

When a hand makes nothing better, it is ranked by its cards one at a time from the top. K-10-7-4-2 is king high; Q-J-10-8-6 is queen high, and loses to it. If two players both hold king high, the second card decides, then the third, and so on to the fifth. If all five match in rank, the hands tie, because suits do not rank in standard poker.

High card sits at the bottom of the poker hand rankings, below a pair. Ace is the highest single card in most games, although Dragon Tiger counts it low. You will find this and other ranking words in our casino glossary, including kicker, the side card that splits otherwise equal hands.

High card odds in five and three-card poker

Counting gives the odds. For five cards, there are 1,287 ways to choose five different ranks, minus 10 that form straights, leaving 1,277; each can take 1,024 suit patterns, minus 4 that form flushes, leaving 1,020. That makes 1,277 × 1,020 = 1,302,540 high-card hands out of 2,598,960.

Five (standard poker)1,302,5402,598,96050.1%
Three (Three Card Poker)16,44022,10074.4%

In three cards, straights and flushes are easier to make but pairs are harder, and three-quarters of all hands end up as high card. That is why the dealer’s qualifying rule in Three Card Poker is set as a high-card hand rather than a pair.

Where high card decides casino poker games

In house-banked poker you play against the dealer, and many games only fully pay your raise if the dealer’s hand ‘qualifies’. Several of those thresholds are high-card hands.

These rules come from the Wizard of Odds Three Card Poker analysis (opens in a new tab), its Caribbean Stud page (opens in a new tab) and its Dragon Tiger page. Copying the dealer in Three Card Poker by playing any queen high costs a little more (3.45%), and playing every hand costs 7.65%, so the queen-6-4 line is worth learning. Our Three Card Poker strategy page sets it out.

High card worked example: the Three Card Poker decision

You bet £10 Ante and are dealt Q-7-2. That beats queen-6-4, so strategy says make the £10 Play bet. With Q-5-3 it falls below the line, so you fold and lose the £10 Ante. Over many hands, the game costs about 3.37% of the Ante, or roughly 34p per £10 hand with best play.

  1. Look at your top card: ace or king high is always a play, and anything below queen high is a fold unless you hold a pair or better.
  2. With a queen, check the second card: higher than 6 means play.
  3. If the second card is exactly 6, check the third: 4 or higher means play.
  4. Anything lower than queen-6-4: fold.

High card myths

  • ‘Ace high always wins.’ It beats any other high-card hand but loses to the smallest pair.
  • ‘Suits break ties.’ Not in standard poker; identical ranks split the pot or push.
  • ‘A run of high-card hands means a big one is due.’ Every deal is independent, as our page on the gambler’s fallacy explains.

Frequently asked questions

What is high card in poker?

High card is a poker hand with no pair, straight or flush, named after its highest card, such as ace high or king high. It is the lowest hand in the rankings and the most common, appearing in about half of all five-card deals. Against another high-card hand, compare the top cards first, then the next, down to the fifth. Our poker hand rankings page lists every hand.

Does a pair beat ace high?

Yes, any pair beats ace high, even a pair of twos. Ace high only wins against other high-card hands. That is why the dealer qualifying rule matters so much in casino poker: a dealer with a weak pair beats your best unpaired hand. Our guide to casino poker vs poker explains how playing against the house changes things.

How are high card ties broken?

High card ties are broken by comparing the next highest card, then the third, fourth and fifth in turn. A-K-9-6-2 beats A-K-9-5-4 on the fourth card. If all five ranks match, the hands tie; suits never decide a winner in standard poker. In house-banked games a full tie usually means a push, as our push definition explains.

What does queen high mean in Three Card Poker?

Queen high is the minimum hand the dealer needs to qualify in Three Card Poker. If the dealer has less, your Ante pays even money and your Play bet is returned. Best strategy plays any hand of queen-6-4 or better, which gives a 3.37% house edge with the common Ante Bonus table. See our Three Card Poker guide for the full rules.

Is there a high card side bet?

Some casino games use high card as the whole game rather than a side bet: Dragon Tiger deals one card to each side and the higher card wins. Its main bets carry a 3.73% house edge with eight decks, and the tie bet costs far more. Our Dragon Tiger page covers its rules, and are side bets worth it looks at side bets generally.

How often does the dealer fail to qualify in Caribbean Stud?

The dealer fails to qualify whenever the hand is below ace-king, which happens often because high card makes up about half of all five-card deals. When that happens your Ante pays even money and your Raise is returned, so a strong hand can win less than its pay table suggests. The game’s house edge is 5.224% with best play; our Caribbean Stud page explains why.
