Lightning multiplier: meaning and maths

A lightning multiplier is a random boost that Evolution’s Lightning games add to certain numbers, cards or totals after betting closes, multiplying the payout if one of those bets wins. The boosts are paid for by a lower base payout or an extra fee, so they make results swingier rather than cheaper.

Key takeaways

  • Lightning multipliers are drawn at random after bets close, so you cannot aim for them.
  • In Lightning Roulette, 1 to 5 Lucky Numbers get 50x to 500x, but an unboosted straight up pays 29 to 1, not 35 to 1.
  • Lightning Blackjack charges a 100% fee and Lightning Baccarat a 20% fee on top of the bet to fund the boosts.
  • Operator pages list Lightning Roulette at 97.10% to 97.30% RTP, close to standard single-zero roulette.

What a lightning multiplier is

A multiplier increases a payout by a set factor. The ‘lightning’ version belongs to Evolution’s Lightning family of live casino games, where the multipliers are drawn at random each round once betting has closed, with a lightning-strike animation on screen. If your bet lands on a struck spot, the multiplier applies; if not, the bet settles at the game’s normal, usually reduced, rate.

It is one of the newer entries in our casino glossary, and the trade-off behind it is always the same: some of the ordinary payout is moved into rare, large boosts.

The maths of a lightning multiplier in roulette

Standard single-zero roulette pays 35 to 1 on a straight up, a 36-unit return once every 37 spins, or 97.30% of stakes. Lightning Roulette pays 29 to 1 when no multiplier lands, a 30-unit return. Without any multipliers that would be 30 ÷ 37 = 81.08%. The multipliers have to fill the gap of roughly 16 percentage points to reach the 97.10% to 97.30% range that UK operator pages list.

Splits, corners, dozens and even-money bets pay the same as standard roulette, so their return is the usual 97.30%. That suggests the lower 97.10% figure applies to straight ups, though the operator pages don’t break the range down. Our expected value guide explains the method.

£1 straight up for 37 spins: standard against Lightning (averages)
GameReturn when the number wins unboostedAverage return per £1Average cost per spin
European roulette£3697.3p2.7p
Lightning Roulette, ignoring multipliers£3081.1p18.9p
Lightning Roulette, with multipliers (97.10%)£30, or far more if struck97.1p2.9p

The average cost is almost the same, but the shape changes. Most winning straight ups now return £30 instead of £36, and a small share are paid at 50x to 500x instead. That is higher volatility, not better value.

Lightning fees in blackjack and baccarat

Card games fund their boosts differently, through a fee charged on top of the bet. A £10 Lightning Baccarat bet commits £12, because of the 20% fee. A £10 Lightning Blackjack hand commits £20, because the fee is 100% of the initial bet; a winning hand then earns a multiplier of 2x to 25x for the following round.

  1. Add the fee to your stake to find the real amount at risk per round.
  2. Work out how many rounds your budget covers at that total, not at the base bet.
  3. Open the help screen and look for the published RTP before you play.
  4. Remember that the boost is random and cannot be targeted or predicted.

On a £100 budget, £10 Lightning Blackjack hands cover five rounds at £20 each, against ten hands of standard blackjack. Our Lightning Blackjack page covers the rules in full.

Lightning multiplier myths

  • ‘Some numbers get struck more.’ Lucky Numbers are drawn at random each round; earlier strikes do not change later ones. See hot and cold numbers.
  • ‘Covering many numbers catches the multipliers.’ Each extra straight up adds its own cost; the edge on each stays the same.
  • ‘Higher multipliers mean a better game.’ A bigger top boost is paid for elsewhere, usually through a lower base payout.

Our comparison of Lightning Roulette and XXXtreme shows how two versions trade base payouts for bigger boosts, and our answer on whether Lightning Roulette is worth playing weighs it up.

Frequently asked questions

How do lightning multipliers work?

Lightning multipliers are random boosts added to a few bet spots after betting closes in Evolution’s Lightning games. If your bet wins on a struck spot, its payout is multiplied, for example 50x to 500x on a Lightning Roulette straight up. If not, the bet pays at the game’s base rate. You cannot choose or predict which spots are struck. Our guide to Lightning games covers the whole series.

Do lightning multipliers improve the odds?

No, they reshape the payouts rather than improving them. Lightning Roulette cuts the normal straight-up payout from 35 to 1 to 29 to 1, and the multipliers give that value back in rare large wins. UK operator pages list the game at 97.10% to 97.30% RTP, much the same as standard single-zero roulette. Our house edge guide explains why the long-run cost barely moves.

What is the highest lightning multiplier?

Among the Lightning games on Evolution’s pages, XXXtreme Lightning Roulette has the highest roulette multiplier at 2,000x, reached through Double Strikes worth 600x to 2,000x. Lightning Dice lists multipliers of up to 1,000x, and standard Lightning Roulette tops out at 500x. A top figure shows what is possible on one bet, not what to expect. See XXXtreme Lightning Roulette for its rules.

Which bets get a lightning multiplier in Lightning Roulette?

Only straight-up bets on a struck Lucky Number get the multiplier in Lightning Roulette. Splits, corners, streets, dozens and even-money bets pay their standard roulette rates and never receive a boost. That is why a straight up pays a reduced 29 to 1 when unboosted, while every other bet pays as normal. Our straight up bet page compares the standard version.

What is the Lightning fee?

The Lightning fee is an extra charge on top of your bet that funds the multipliers in some Lightning card games. Evolution lists a 100% fee on each initial bet in Lightning Blackjack and a 20% fee in Lightning Baccarat, so a £10 bet commits £20 or £12 respectively. Count the fee when planning a budget. Our Lightning Baccarat page explains how the fee and cards interact.

Are lightning multipliers random?

Yes, the multipliers are generated at random each round after betting closes, so earlier rounds tell you nothing about the next one. In Lightning Roulette the presenter pulls a lever to trigger the Lucky Numbers once bets are locked. Patterns in past strikes are coincidence, not a signal. Our page on independent events explains why past results have no memory.
