Free casino games: demo play in the UK
Free casino games in demo play mode let UK players try slots and RNG table games with virtual credit instead of money, but a licensed casino must verify your age before you can open them. Gambling Commission rules also require each demo to use the same rules and odds as the real-money version on that site.
Key takeaways
- UK-licensed casinos must age-verify you before you can play free demo games, a rule in force since 7 May 2019.
- RTS 6 says a demo must use the same game rules as the real-money version on the same site and reflect its real chances of winning.
- Demo play is good for learning rules, paytables and features, but a few hundred spins reveal nothing reliable about RTP.
- Free-to-play prize games and free spins offers are different things from demo mode.
- Age check needed
- Yes, before any demo game

What free casino games in demo mode are
A demo, sometimes called play-for-fun or practice mode, is the real game running with pretend credit. You spin the same reels or play the same blackjack hands, but nothing is staked and nothing can be won. When the virtual balance runs out you can usually reload it. Demo play UK-style comes with one condition that surprises visitors from abroad: you have to sign in to a verified account first.
Demos are most common for online slots and RNG table games such as blackjack and roulette. Live dealer rounds are dealt in real time for real stakes, so they rarely have a practice version; the live tables in a lobby usually show a minimum bet rather than a demo button. Our question page are casino games played for free in demo mode gives the short answer.
| Format | Costs you money? | Can you win money? | Age check needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Demo or practice mode | No | No | Yes, at UK-licensed casinos |
| Free-to-play prize games | No | Yes, small prizes | Yes |
| Free spins offer | Usually needs a qualifying deposit or bet | Yes | Yes |
| Real-money play | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Why UK demo play needs age verification
On 7 February 2019 the Gambling Commission announced that online casinos would have to verify age and identity before customers could deposit or gamble, and its announcement of the new rules (opens in a new tab) included free-to-play demo games. The rule took effect on 7 May 2019. Before then, anyone could open a casino demo without an account.
The reasoning is simple. A demo looks and sounds exactly like the real game, and the Commission didn't want under-18s practising on gambling products at licensed sites. So at a UK casino you register, pass the identity check and then find the demo option in the game lobby. Our guide to casino account verification explains what that check involves, and age verification rules gives the legal detail. The Commission's consumer guide to age and ID checks (opens in a new tab) covers the sign-up side.
You don't need to deposit to play a demo, but you do need a verified account. Since 31 October 2025 casinos must also prompt you to set a deposit limit before your first deposit, so a demo session is a sensible time to decide what that limit should be.
The rule that demo games must match real odds
A common worry is that demo modes pay out more to hook players. Remote Technical Standard 6, on play-for-free games (opens in a new tab), exists to stop exactly that. Its stated aim is to minimise the risk that customers are misled about the likelihood of winning by the way play-for-free games behave.
| Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Same rules (6A) | A demo must use the same game rules as the real-money version on the same website |
| Accurate chances | Operators must take all reasonable steps to make the demo reflect the real game's likelihood of winning and prize distribution |
| Random numbers | The demo should use the same RNG, another RNG meeting RTS 7A, or a public RNG with no systematic bias |
| No extra wins | Any other method must not produce a higher than expected share of winning outcomes |
| Same payouts | Virtual cash payouts should match the real-money game's payouts |
| Edited footage | Promotional videos must say when footage has been edited or sped up |
There is one important carve-out. Guidance under RTS 6 recognises that a supplier's own website, separate from the real-money casino, may show a game with higher than normal returns to demonstrate its bonus features, and says it should be made clear that it is a demonstration game designed for that purpose. So a showcase demo on a game studio's site isn't a reliable guide to how often a feature lands. A demo inside a UK-licensed casino should be. Our RNG explainer covers how the underlying random numbers are produced and tested.
What free demo play can and can't teach you
Demo mode is a genuinely useful learning tool, as long as you're clear about its limits.
Advantages
- How the rules work, including side bets and buttons
- Where the paytable, RTP and help screen sit
- How a bonus feature plays out once it triggers
- The pace of the game under UK speed rules
- Whether you actually enjoy the game before spending
Drawbacks
- Reliable RTP or how often features land; samples are far too small
- How it feels to lose real money
- Your real budget discipline, because virtual credit reloads
- Live dealer games, which rarely have demos
The biggest trap is reading too much into a short run. A slot's RTP is a long-run average over millions of spins. A few hundred spins in demo mode can easily return far more or far less than that figure, and the next few hundred can do the opposite. Our page on the law of large numbers explains why short samples mislead.
Worked example: what 200 demo spins really tell you
Take Big Bass Bonanza, a Reel Kingdom slot distributed by Pragmatic Play, with a published RTP of 96.71%, high volatility, 10 paylines and a 2,100x maximum win. Play 200 demo spins at a virtual 10p and you have staked £20 of pretend money.
| Measure | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Total virtual stake | 200 × £0.10 | £20.00 |
| Average return | £20.00 × 96.71% | £19.34 |
| Average cost | £20.00 − £19.34 | £0.66 |
| Maximum single win | 2,100 × £0.10 | £210 |
The average cost of 66p is tiny compared with how widely a high-volatility slot swings. Many 200-spin sessions end well below £19.34 because no feature lands; a few end far above it because one does. That's what volatility means. Compare Starburst, a NetEnt slot listed as low volatility with a 96.09% RTP and a 500x maximum win: its demo sessions will usually feel steadier, with smaller wins more often. A demo can show you that difference in feel, which is worth knowing before you pick a game. It can't show you which game will pay you more, because neither will on average. Our volatility guide has more.
How to use demo play UK casinos offer, step by step
- Join a UK-licensed casino and complete age and identity verification.
- Open the game lobby and look for a Demo, Practice or Play for fun button on the game tile or game page.
- Before you spin, open the help or info screen and find the RTP, paytable and rules.
- Play enough rounds to see how wins are paid and how any bonus round works.
- Write down the RTP and volatility, and check whether the real-money version on that site shows the same RTP.
- Decide on a budget and deposit limit for real play based on what a session costs on average, not on how the demo went.
- If you switch to real money, set a session time limit and stick to it.
Step 5 matters because some slots exist in more than one RTP version. Our guide on how to read casino game rules shows where to find that figure.
Free-to-play prize games are not demos
Some casinos run free-to-play games that can award real prizes. Coral's app listing mentions free-to-play games with real-money prizes, and Ladbrokes' app listing names free-to-play games including Instant Spins, a daily prize wheel and game show or live roulette contests. These are promotions with their own terms, not practice versions of a casino game. They are usually limited to one play a day or a set number of entries, and prizes and eligibility depend on the casino's terms.
Free spins offers are different again. They are real-money spins with conditions, such as a qualifying deposit or bet, a fixed spin value and an expiry date. Our free spins guide explains how they work, and no deposit bonus covers the rarer offers that need no deposit.
Demo play myths, checked against the rules
| Myth | What's true |
|---|---|
| Demos pay more than real games | At a UK-licensed casino, RTS 6 requires the same rules and accurate chances of winning |
| You can practise to find when a slot is due | Spins are independent; a slot has no memory and is never due |
| A good demo run means the real game will pay | Short runs vary widely around the RTP in both modes |
| Demo mode needs no account in the UK | Licensed casinos must verify your age first |
| Studio showcase demos show normal returns | Supplier sites may boost returns to show features and must say so |
The 'due' myth deserves extra attention, because demo play is where many people first think they've spotted a pattern. Every spin is decided by a random number generator independently of the last. See can a slot be due a win and the gambler's fallacy for the maths.
UK rules that apply once you play for real
When you move from a demo to real money, several UK rules shape the game. Online slots have a maximum stake of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. Autoplay has been banned on slots since 31 October 2021 and on all online casino games since 17 January 2025, and slots must take at least 2.5 seconds per spin, with no turbo or slam-stop. Other casino games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle. Casinos must also show your net spend and time played in real time.
These rules exist because real play costs money. Demo mode is free, and that's its value: try games there, then play for real only with money you've set aside for entertainment. Our online game design rules page covers each rule in full.

Frequently asked questions
Can you play free casino games without signing up in the UK?
Not at a UK-licensed casino, because since 7 May 2019 operators must verify your age before you can open free-to-play versions of gambling games. You need a registered, verified account, but you don't need to deposit. Game studios' own websites sometimes show demos, but those may be tuned to show off features. Our casino account verification guide explains what the sign-up check involves and how long it usually takes.
Do demo slots pay out the same as real money slots?
At a UK-licensed casino they should, because RTS 6 requires a demo to use the same game rules as the real-money version on the same site and to reflect its real chances of winning and prize distribution. Short runs in either mode can still differ widely from the RTP. A demo on a supplier's showcase site may show higher returns and should say so. Our RTP explainer shows how the long-run figure works.
Can you win real money in demo mode?
No, demo mode uses virtual credit only, so nothing you win can be withdrawn. Some casinos run separate free-to-play prize games, such as daily wheels or contests, that can pay small real prizes under their own terms; Ladbrokes' app, for example, lists Instant Spins and a daily prize wheel. Those are promotions rather than demos. Free spins offers need a qualifying deposit or bet. See our free spins guide for how those work.
Is demo play a good way to learn a casino game?
Yes, demo play is an excellent way to learn rules, buttons, paytables and how bonus features work without spending anything. It also lets you compare how steady or swingy different slots feel. What it can't do is show a game's true RTP or predict your results, because a few hundred rounds is far too small a sample. Pair demo practice with our guide on how to read casino game rules for the full picture.
Can you play live dealer games in demo mode?
Usually not, because live dealer rounds are dealt in real time at a studio table and every seat is playing for real stakes. Instead of a demo, you can usually watch a table before placing a bet, and read the game's help screen for rules and payouts. RNG versions of blackjack and roulette are the better place to practise. Our page on live casino vs RNG games explains the differences between the two formats.
Why do UK casinos need ID for free games?
The Gambling Commission decided in 2019 that free-to-play versions of gambling games at licensed sites should be behind the same age check as real-money games. The aim is to stop under-18s practising on gambling products that look and sound exactly like the real thing. The check uses your name, address and date of birth, usually matched electronically within seconds. Our age verification rules page sets out the full regulation and when it applies.
Does practising in demo mode improve my chances?
Only for games with real decisions, such as blackjack or video poker, where learning correct play lowers the house edge. On slots and roulette there is nothing to master: every outcome is random and independent, so practice can't change your odds. Demo play still helps you understand features and choose games you enjoy. For decision games, our blackjack basic strategy guide shows how correct play lowers the edge without removing it.
