Age verification at online casinos

Age verification at online casinos in Great Britain must happen before you can deposit or gamble. Since 7 May 2019, licensed casinos have had to confirm your age and identity first, even for free-to-play demo games or a bonus, replacing the old rule that gave them 72 hours. Most checks take seconds against databases; some need documents.

Key takeaways

  • Since 7 May 2019, online gambling businesses must verify your age and identity before you deposit or gamble, including with a free bet or bonus.
  • You must also be age-verified before you can play free-to-play demo versions of gambling games.
  • The minimum details are your name, address and date of birth, usually checked against credit reference and electoral roll data first.
  • A casino shouldn’t make ID a condition of withdrawing if it could have asked earlier.
  • You must be 18 or over to gamble online in Great Britain.

Age verification at online casinos: the rule in brief

If you open an account with a casino licensed by the Gambling Commission, you can’t deposit, spin a slot, play a hand or even try a demo until the casino has confirmed that you are who you say you are and that you are 18 or over. The rule applies to every online gambling business serving customers in Great Britain.

The Commission’s guidance for players puts it simply: all online gambling businesses must ask you to prove your age and identity before you gamble (opens in a new tab). It also says a customer cannot place a bet until they have been verified, so businesses should verify them as quickly as they can.

For most people the check is invisible. You type your name, address and date of birth, the casino matches them against databases, and you’re through. Only if that match fails will you be asked for documents. This page explains the rule, how checks work, what a casino may and may not ask for, and how it fits with the rest of the UK casino rules.

What the UK age verification rule for online casinos says

The rules were announced on 7 February 2019 and took effect on 7 May 2019. They sit in the Commission’s licence conditions on customer identity verification (opens in a new tab). The main points are below.

UK online age and identity verification requirements
RequirementWhat it means
Verify before gamblingAge and identity checked before you can deposit or gamble
Bonuses and free betsAlso covered: you can’t play with a free bet or bonus before verification
Free-to-play gamesYou must be age-verified before you can open demo versions of gambling games
Minimum identity dataName, address and date of birth
At withdrawalID can’t be made a condition of withdrawal if it could have been asked for earlier, except where the law requires a check at that point

The Commission gives three main reasons why casinos ask for ID: to check your age, to check whether you have self-excluded, and to confirm your identity. The self-exclusion point matters because a casino must refuse service to anyone registered with GAMSTOP, and it can only do that if it knows who you are.

What changed in 2019: the end of the 72-hour window

Before May 2019, operators had 72 hours to complete age checks. In practice that meant someone could open an account, deposit and start playing while the check was still running. If the check later failed, the casino had to deal with play that should never have happened.

The 2019 rules closed that window. Verification now comes first, and nothing that counts as gambling, including play with bonus funds, can happen until it’s done. The Commission’s 2019 announcement (opens in a new tab) also brought in the requirement to verify before free-to-play games, so a demo version of a gambling game is no longer an open door for someone who hasn’t been checked.

How online casinos verify your age

Casinos usually work in two stages.

Stage one: database checks

Your name, address and date of birth are matched against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll. This kind of electronic check is often instant. It isn’t a credit check in the borrowing sense and isn’t about whether you can afford to gamble; it simply confirms the details belong to a real adult at that address.

Stage two: documents

If the database match isn’t enough, the casino asks for copies of documents. The Commission gives passports, driving licences and household bills as examples, but it doesn’t set a list, so casinos choose what they accept. PlayOJO’s help page, for example, names a passport, driving licence, ID card or utility bill, uploaded through its own tool rather than by email, and says it aims to verify within 12 hours. Our question on what ID online casinos accept compares the usual options, and why a casino asks for proof of address explains that request.

Selfies

A casino may ask for a selfie if it thinks there may be fraud on the account, such as someone using another person’s identity. The Commission says businesses shouldn’t ask for one at withdrawal if they could have asked sooner, though a legal requirement may apply.

Free-to-play demos and bonuses need verification too

Two parts of the rule surprise people. The first is that demo games are covered. On a UK-licensed site you can’t play a free version of a slot or roulette game without first completing age verification. That is why so many casino lobbies show games but ask you to log in before you can open even the demo. See are casino games free in demo mode? and can you play slots for free in the UK?

The second is bonuses. The rule covers gambling with a free bet or bonus, so no welcome spins or bonus funds can be used until verification is complete. None of our partner casinos offers a no deposit bonus anyway, and every offer requires an account that has passed the checks.

Your verified date of birth does more than confirm you’re 18. It also determines which online slot stake limit applies: £5 per spin if you’re 25 or over, and £2 if you’re 18 to 24. See online slot stake limits.

ID checks at withdrawal: what casinos can and can’t ask

The rules also deal with timing at the other end of the account: cashing out. A business can’t make proof of age or identity a condition of withdrawing if it could reasonably have asked for it earlier, unless the law requires a check at that point.

The Commission’s guidance adds that a business delaying a withdrawal because of insufficient ID may breach Licence Condition 17 and could face regulatory action. It also says a business can’t confiscate your money because you didn’t verify your ID within a time limit.

That doesn’t mean you’ll never be asked for anything after sign-up. Checks for other reasons, such as anti-money laundering or financial vulnerability, can come later. Our guide to ID checks for casino withdrawals and the question why is my casino withdrawal pending? cover those situations. If you think a request is unfair, use the casino’s complaints process; our complaints and ADR guide explains the next steps.

Age verification compared with other casino checks

Age verification often gets confused with other checks a casino runs. They have different purposes and different triggers.

Checks a UK online casino may run
CheckPurposeWhen it happens
Age and identity verificationConfirm you’re 18+ and who you say you are; check self-exclusionBefore any deposit or play
GAMSTOP checkMake sure you haven’t self-excluded from online gamblingWhen you open an account
Financial vulnerability checkPublic-record check for things like bankruptcy or CCJsWhen net deposits pass £150 in a rolling 30 days (since 28 February 2025)
Source of funds or income checksAnti-money laundering and social responsibilityDepends on spending and risk
Selfie requestFraud preventionIf fraud is suspected

The financial vulnerability check is explained on our financial risk checks page. Credit-reference-based affordability assessments have only been piloted and are not live.

What to expect when you sign up: step by step

The exact screens vary by casino, but the order is set by the rules.

  1. Enter your full name, date of birth and current address exactly as they appear on official records.
  2. Choose your marketing preferences; casinos must let you opt in by product and channel.
  3. Set a deposit limit when prompted; since 31 October 2025 casinos must ask before your first deposit.
  4. Wait for the electronic check, which is often instant.
  5. If asked, upload documents through the casino’s secure upload tool, not by email unless the casino says so.
  6. Once verified, deposit and play. Until then, no real-money, bonus or demo play is possible.

Protecting under-18s beyond the sign-up check

Age verification is one layer of several. The gambling advertising rules say ads must not be of strong appeal to under-18s (CAP Code 16.3.12, since 1 October 2022), and no one who is or seems to be under 25 may be shown gambling or playing a significant role.

In land-based premises, ‘Think 25’ was adopted and the test-purchasing exemption removed from 30 August 2024. The minimum age for all National Lottery games, including scratchcards and online instant win games, rose from 16 to 18; the government’s response on the National Lottery minimum age (opens in a new tab) planned the legal change for 1 October 2021.

If you’re a parent worried about a child’s access, device-level blocking tools and bank gambling blocks add further protection; see our page on gambling blocking software.

Frequently asked questions

Do online casinos have to verify your age?

Yes. Since 7 May 2019, every online gambling business licensed in Great Britain must verify your age and identity before you can deposit or gamble, including with a bonus or free bet. Demo versions of gambling games are covered too. You must be 18 or over. Our question on how old you have to be to gamble online covers the age limits for each type of gambling.

How do online casinos check your age?

Most start with an electronic check, matching your name, address and date of birth against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll. That is often instant. If it doesn’t confirm your details, the casino asks for documents such as a passport, driving licence or household bill. The Commission doesn’t set a fixed list. See what ID online casinos accept for the common options.

Is age verification a credit check?

Not in the borrowing sense. Casinos use data held by credit reference agencies to confirm that your name, address and date of birth match a real adult, but the check isn’t about whether you can borrow money or afford to gamble. Separate financial vulnerability checks can happen later when net deposits pass £150 in 30 days. Our financial risk checks page explains that rule.

Why do I need to verify my age to play free demo games?

Because the 2019 rules require age verification before you can open free-to-play versions of gambling games on a UK-licensed site. Demos look and play like the real thing, and the rule stops under-18s using them as a way in. You don’t need to deposit to verify, only to provide your details. See can you play slots for free in the UK? for more on demo play.

How long does casino age verification take?

There’s no fixed timescale in the rules. Electronic checks are often instant, while document checks take longer. The Commission says businesses should verify customers as quickly as they can, because nobody can bet until verified. PlayOJO’s help page, for example, says it aims to verify documents within 12 hours. Our account verification guide explains how to avoid delays.

Can a casino ask for ID when I try to withdraw?

Not as a condition of withdrawal if it could have asked earlier, unless the law requires a check at that point. The Commission says delaying a withdrawal because of insufficient ID may breach Licence Condition 17, and that a casino can’t confiscate money because you didn’t verify within a time limit. Other checks, such as anti-money laundering, can still arise. See ID checks for casino withdrawals.

Can I gamble online at 18 in the UK?

Yes. The minimum age for online casino gambling in Great Britain is 18, and once verified you can play the same games as anyone else. The one age-based difference online is the slot stake limit: 18–24-year-olds can stake up to £2 per spin, while those 25 and over can stake up to £5. Our question can I gamble online at 18? has more.

What happens if I fail age verification?

You won’t be able to deposit or play until the casino has confirmed your details. Usually that means uploading documents such as a passport, driving licence or recent bill. Check that you entered your name, date of birth and current address correctly, since small mismatches are a frequent cause. If you’re unhappy with a request, contact the casino. Our guide to how to sign up to an online casino covers the details to enter.
