What is a game provider?
What is a game provider? It’s the company that designs and builds a casino game, such as a slot, a live roulette table or a game show, and supplies it to online casinos. The provider sets the rules, the maths and the features; the casino hosts the game in its lobby and handles your account and money.
Key takeaways
- A game provider, or studio, makes the game; the casino (the operator) offers it to you and holds your balance.
- The provider builds the RTP and volatility into the game, and some slots come in several RTP versions for casinos to choose from.
- Providers supplying British players need their own Gambling Commission licence, and their games must pass approved independent testing.
- Many studios belong to bigger groups: Evolution owns NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City, for example.

What is a game provider? A plain definition
Think of an online casino as a shop and game providers as the manufacturers whose products sit on its shelves. The casino, known in UK rules as the operator, signs you up, verifies your identity, takes deposits, pays withdrawals and offers safer-gambling tools. The provider supplies the games themselves: the graphics, the rules, the paytable and the random outcome engine or live studio behind them.
So when you open Starburst at one casino and then at another, you are playing the same NetEnt game in two different shops. The casino chooses which games to stock; it doesn’t write the code that decides whether you win. Our glossary entry for game provider gives the short version, and the casino questions hub answers related questions.
What a casino game provider actually controls
- Rules and paytable: what each symbol, bet or hand pays.
- RTP and volatility: the long-run return and how bumpy results are, built into the game’s maths.
- Features: wilds, free spins, multipliers, side bets and bonus rounds.
- The random number generator for digital games, or the studio, dealers and equipment for live games.
- Game information: the help screen that, under UK rules, must show the RTP or likelihood of winning before you play.
The last point comes from the Commission’s technical standard on game rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab). A separate standard says rules, payouts and probabilities can’t be changed while a game is available for play. For the maths behind these terms, see RTP explained and our guide to casino random number generators.
Game provider examples: who makes what
Here are some studios whose games UK players meet often, with ownership as published.
| Provider | Parent or ownership | Known for |
|---|---|---|
| NetEnt | Evolution, since December 2020 | Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest |
| Nolimit City | Evolution, deal announced June 2022 | xWays and xNudge mechanics |
| Quickspin | Playtech, since May 2016 | Big Bad Wolf, Sakura Fortune |
| Play’n GO | Independent, privately held | Book of Dead, Reactoonz |
| Reel Kingdom | Distributed by Pragmatic Play | The Big Bass series |
| Barcrest | Light & Wonder, bought in 2011 | Rainbow Riches |
| Evolution | Listed on Nasdaq Stockholm | Lightning Roulette, Crazy Time |
Ownership chains explain why games from different brands can feel related. Evolution’s brands page (opens in a new tab) lists Evolution and Ezugi for live casino, and NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City for slots. Browse every studio we cover on the slot providers hub.
Slot providers and live casino providers
Slot studios build software: reels, symbols and a random number generator. Live casino providers run physical studios with real dealers, cameras and tables, streamed to you. Evolution says it has offered live casino since 2006 and runs more than 2,000 live tables and game show environments in 15 languages; Pragmatic Play says its live interface comes in 28 languages and names Bucharest as the studio its roulette is broadcast from.
Some companies do both. Pragmatic Play makes slots such as Gates of Olympus as well as live games, and you can compare its live side on our Pragmatic Play Live page. Our guide to how live casino works explains the studio set-up.
Why the provider’s RTP choice affects what a game costs
Several providers release slots in more than one RTP version, and the casino picks which one to run. That single setting changes the expected cost of play. Expected loss is simply stake × (100% − RTP).
| Slot (provider) | RTP version | Expected loss on £500 |
|---|---|---|
| Gonzo’s Quest 2 (NetEnt) | 96.06% | £19.70 |
| Gonzo’s Quest 2 (NetEnt) | 94.15% | £29.25 |
| Gonzo’s Quest 2 (NetEnt) | 92.13% | £39.35 |
| San Quentin 2: Death Row (Nolimit City) | 96.13% | £19.35 |
| San Quentin 2: Death Row (Nolimit City) | 92.11% | £39.45 |
The same game at its lowest listed version costs about twice as much on average as at its highest, even though it looks identical. Averages only show up over very many spins; any single session can land far above or below them, and the house still keeps its edge in the long run. Because the help screen must show the RTP, you can check which version a casino runs. See why some slots have different RTPs at different casinos and can casinos change a game’s RTP?.
Are game providers licensed and tested in the UK?
Yes. Supplying games to British players needs a Gambling Commission licence. Published examples include ELK Studios (account 40844), Quickspin (38516), Relax Gaming (37462) and Greentube (41020, for remote gambling software), while Evolution’s GB licence is held by Evolution Malta Holding Limited (41655).
New games and random number generators can only be released after testing is complete and the report has gone to the Commission. The Commission keeps a list of approved test houses (opens in a new tab) that carry out this work. More on this in casino game testing labs and our explainer on remote technical standards.
Providers face enforcement like operators do. In June 2026 Stakelogic BV agreed to pay £122,835 for slots that ran faster than the 2.5-second minimum, and in July 2026 Evolution Malta Holding agreed to pay £4.75 million after its games reached British players through unlicensed sites.
How to find out who made a casino game
- Open the game and look for the information or help icon, usually an ‘i’ or a menu.
- Read the rules page, which normally names the studio and shows the RTP.
- Compare the RTP with the figure on the provider’s own page or a trusted review, to spot a lower version.
- In the casino lobby, use the provider filter to see every game from that studio.
- If anything is unclear, ask the casino’s support team which version it runs.
Game provider myths checked
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| The casino decides when you win | Outcomes come from the provider’s tested game; UK rules don’t allow online games that adjust results to hit a target return |
| A bigger studio pays out more | Return depends on each game’s RTP version, not the studio’s size |
| Casinos can tweak RTP mid-session | Rules, payouts and probabilities can’t change while a game is available |
| All casinos run the same version of a slot | Some slots exist in several RTP versions; check the help screen |

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a game provider and a casino?
The provider makes the game; the casino offers it to you. A provider such as NetEnt or Play’n GO designs the rules, maths and features, while the casino, the licensed operator, runs your account, verifies your identity, handles deposits and withdrawals and provides safer-gambling tools. You can find the same game at many casinos. Our slot providers hub lists the studios, and the casino reviews cover the operators.
Do game providers set the RTP of a slot?
Yes. The provider builds the RTP into the game’s maths, and some release several versions, such as Gonzo’s Quest 2 at 96.06%, 94.15% or 92.13%. The casino then chooses which version to offer. UK rules require the RTP to be shown before you play and stop it changing while the game is available. See RTP explained and can casinos change a game’s RTP?.
Do game providers need a UK licence?
Yes. Companies supplying gambling games to British players need a Gambling Commission licence, and their games and random number generators must be tested by an approved test house before release. Published examples include ELK Studios (account 40844) and Relax Gaming (37462), and Evolution Malta Holding Limited holds Evolution’s GB licence. Our page on remote gambling licences explains the licence types.
Can a game provider see when I’m winning or rig a game?
Games licensed for Great Britain must produce outcomes that are acceptably random and match their published rules and paytables, and online games that adjust results to hit a target return aren’t allowed. Testing by approved labs checks this before release. That doesn’t mean you’ll win: the house edge still applies over time. Read how do I know a casino game is not rigged? for more.
What is a game studio in online casinos?
Studio is another word for game provider, often used for smaller slot makers or for a team inside a larger group. Quickspin, for example, is a Stockholm studio owned by Playtech. In live casino, studio can also mean the physical room where dealers are filmed. Our glossary entry for studio explains both meanings, and live casino studios covers the filming side.
Who are the biggest casino game providers?
There’s no official ranking, but some groups are clearly large by their own published figures. Evolution says it runs more than 2,000 live tables and owns slot brands NetEnt, Red Tiger, Big Time Gaming and Nolimit City. Games Global lists more than 1,300 titles from over 40 studios. Size says nothing about your odds, though. Compare studios on the slot providers hub and the live casino hub.
Does the game provider affect my chances of winning?
Only through the specific game’s design. Your long-run return depends on that game’s RTP version and volatility, not on the studio’s name. Two versions of the same slot can cost very different amounts: on £500 of spins, Gonzo’s Quest 2 at 96.06% costs £19.70 on average, against £39.35 at 92.13%. Check the help screen. Our page is a higher RTP slot better? explains the trade-offs.
Why do providers sell games to many casinos?
Because supplying many operators is how studios reach players and earn revenue, often through aggregation platforms that bundle many studios together. Stakelogic’s live games, for example, launched with a UK casino in 2026 via Relax Gaming’s aggregation. For you, it means the same game can appear at several casinos, sometimes in different RTP versions. Read how casinos make money for the business side.
