Pragmatic Play slots

Pragmatic Play slots are some of the most played games at UK casinos, led by Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza and The Dog House. Most of the studio’s titles in our checked data sit between 96.01% and 96.77% RTP, so the real question is which version your casino runs and how fast a high-volatility game can use up a budget.

Key takeaways

  • Pragmatic Play was founded in 2015, is headquartered in Gibraltar and holds a UK Gambling Commission licence.
  • Default RTPs in our checked data run from 96.01% (Wolf Gold) to 96.77% (Wild Wild Riches), but lower-RTP versions of many games exist.
  • Most of its best-known slots are high volatility, with max wins from 1,500× to 93,750× the stake.
  • The Big Bass games come from Reel Kingdom and are distributed by Pragmatic Play.
  • UK rules cap slot stakes at £5 a spin (£2 for 18–24s), and feature buys are not offered to British players.

Who makes Pragmatic Play slots

Pragmatic Play was founded in 2015 and gives Gibraltar as its headquarters. Its own website says the business is owned by a private investor group led by Veridian (Gibraltar) Limited, with Julian Jarvis as chief executive, and that it is licensed or certified in more than 30 jurisdictions, including Great Britain through the Gambling Commission. You can read the company’s own summary on the Pragmatic Play website (opens in a new tab).

Slots are only part of the business. The studio lists live casino, jackpots, crash and arcade games, and its Drops & Wins promotions among its products. That breadth matters to UK players for one practical reason: the same supplier often powers a casino’s slot lobby, some of its live casino tables and its prize campaigns, so the studio’s rules and RTP settings turn up in many places on one site.

If you are new to the idea of a game supplier, our explainer on what a game provider is covers how studios supply games to casinos. For the wider list of studios, see our slot providers hub.

Pragmatic Play’s pay-anywhere and cluster slots

The studio’s signature format drops paylines entirely. In Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza, eight or more matching symbols anywhere on a 6×5 grid pay, and winning symbols clear so new ones fall in, a mechanic we explain on our cascading reels page. The Sugar Rush and Fruit Party games use a 7×7 grid where symbols must touch in groups of five or more, which is classic cluster pays.

Notice how close the RTPs are: every game in that table sits within 0.05 percentage points of 96.5%. The real differences are the max win and the volatility. The 1000 and 2500 sequels raise the ceiling, which usually means more of the return is packed into rare, very large results and less into everyday wins. Our Gates of Olympus series and Sweet Bonanza series pages compare the versions side by side.

Classic reel, payline and Megaways titles

Before the grid games took over, Pragmatic built its name on five-reel line slots, and it later added a run of licensed Megaways games. These are a useful contrast because their maths spreads further: from a medium-volatility line game capped at 2,500× to a 4,096-ways title that can pay 93,750×.

Two games stand out. Buffalo King has the highest ceiling in our data at 93,750× the stake, which at 20p a spin is a theoretical £18,750. Wild Wild Riches has the highest default RTP of the batch at 96.77%. At the other end, Wolf Gold has the lowest RTP here (96.01%) but medium volatility, so its results tend to swing less. You can follow the studio’s animal and Megaways remakes on our Dog House series and buffalo slots pages.

Pragmatic Play slots RTP: why the version matters

The figures above are default settings. Pragmatic, like most studios, supplies several RTP versions of the same game and the casino chooses which to run. Our checked data records lower versions for many titles: Sweet Bonanza 1000 also exists at 95.52% and 94.51%, and The Dog House Megaways at 95.53% and 94.55%. The game looks and plays the same; only the long-run return changes.

Here is what that costs. Say you play 300 spins at £1 on Sweet Bonanza 1000, so £300 goes through the game. At 96.53% RTP the average loss is £300 × 3.47% = £10.41. At 94.51% it is £300 × 5.49% = £16.47. Same game, same session, about £6 more expected cost. Our page on why RTPs differ between casinos explains why operators pick lower settings.

  1. Open the slot and tap the information or paytable button (usually an ‘i’ or a menu icon).
  2. Scroll to the game rules and look for the line giving the theoretical return to player.
  3. Compare it with the default figure in the tables on this page.
  4. Note the volatility indicator if the game shows one; several Pragmatic titles rate themselves on a 1–5 scale.
  5. Set your stake and a deposit limit before your first spin, not after a run of losses.

What high volatility means for a £20 budget

Nearly every famous Pragmatic Play slot is rated high or very high volatility. RTP tells you the average cost; volatility tells you how bumpy the ride is on the way. On a high-volatility game a long run of small or no wins is normal, with the return arriving in occasional bigger hits. That is also why our RTP explainer stresses that a 96.5% figure is a long-run average over millions of spins, not a promise about your next hundred.

Expected cost per 100 spins at 96.5% RTP
StakeSpins from £20 (no wins)Staked per 100 spinsAverage loss per 100 spins
10p200£1035p
50p40£50£1.75
£120£100£3.50
£210£200£7.00
£54£500£17.50

The middle column is the worst case, where nothing comes back. On a very volatile game that is a realistic short-session outcome, which is why a 10p stake suits a £20 budget far better than £1. Our guide to how long £20 lasts on a slot works through more examples.

Max wins in context

Headline caps such as 25,000× look large, but they describe the single best possible outcome, not something a typical player sees. At 10p a spin a 25,000× cap is £2,500; at £1 it is £25,000. Once the cap is reached the game typically stops paying, even part-way through a feature. Pragmatic does not publish how often its caps are reached, and third-party hit-rate claims are not reliable, so treat the max win as a ceiling rather than a target. Our explainer on what max win means has more detail.

Big Bass slots and the Reel Kingdom link

Many players assume the Big Bass fishing games are Pragmatic originals. They are made by Reel Kingdom and distributed by Pragmatic Play, which is why they share the same lobby branding. Big Bass Bonanza launched the series in December 2020, with a default 96.71% RTP and a 2,100× max win. The full run is on our Big Bass series page.

Pragmatic Play live casino and game shows

Pragmatic’s live studio, which it names as broadcasting its roulette from Bucharest, offers a range that includes Mega Wheel, Mega Roulette, Sweet Bonanza CandyLand and a set of speed games. The studio says Mega Wheel pays up to 500× the bet, and its Speed Roulette averages around 25 seconds a round. We cover these on our Pragmatic Play Live, Mega Wheel and Sweet Bonanza CandyLand pages. Remember that the UK slot stake limits do not apply to live tables, so the casino’s own limits and your budget are what control the pace there.

How UK rules shape Pragmatic Play slots

  • Stake limits: £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over (from 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18–24s (from 21 May 2025). The Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out the details, and our slot stake limits page explains them.
  • Game design: since 31 October 2021 UK slots must run at least 2.5 seconds a spin, with no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, and no celebrating a win that is lower than the stake.
  • Feature buys: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. Our bonus buy page has the background.
  • Ante bets: some titles offer an optional higher-stake mode; in Sweet Bonanza Xmas, for example, the RTP moves from 96.48% to 96.51% with the Ante Bet on. The extra stake counts towards the £5 or £2 limit.

Are Pragmatic Play slots for you?

Advantages

  • Default RTPs in our checked data cluster around 96.5%.
  • Clear 1–5 volatility scales on several newer games.
  • Wide choice of formats: pay-anywhere grids, clusters, lines and Megaways.

Drawbacks

  • Most headline games are high or very high volatility, so budgets can drain quickly.
  • Lower-RTP versions exist and casinos don’t always make the setting obvious.
  • Big max-win figures can give a misleading idea of what a normal session returns.

If you prefer steadier play, start with Wolf Gold or the line-based games rather than the 1000 sequels. For a head-to-head with another big studio, read NetEnt vs Pragmatic Play.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Pragmatic Play?

Pragmatic Play says it is owned by a private investor group led by Veridian (Gibraltar) Limited. The company was founded in 2015, gives Gibraltar as its headquarters and names Julian Jarvis as chief executive. It holds a UK Gambling Commission licence and says it is licensed or certified in more than 30 jurisdictions. Ownership does not change how an individual slot pays, because each game’s maths is fixed and independently tested; our page on how casino games are tested explains the checks behind that, and the slot providers hub compares other studios.

What is the RTP of Pragmatic Play slots?

Most Pragmatic Play slots in our checked data have a default RTP between 96.01% and 96.77%. Wolf Gold sits at the bottom of that range and Wild Wild Riches at the top, with Gates of Olympus and Sweet Bonanza close to 96.5%. Casinos can choose lower versions, and some games exist at around 95.5% or 94.5%. Always check the figure in the game’s rules screen. Our RTP explainer shows how to turn that percentage into an expected cost in pounds.

Are Pragmatic Play slots high volatility?

Yes, most of the studio’s best-known slots are rated high or very high volatility. That includes Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, The Dog House Megaways and Sugar Rush 1000. Exceptions in our data include Wolf Gold and Chilli Heat, both rated medium. High volatility means long runs of small returns broken by occasional larger wins, so a smaller stake makes a fixed budget last longer. See our high vs low volatility comparison for how the two styles play.

Is Big Bass Bonanza a Pragmatic Play slot?

Big Bass Bonanza is made by Reel Kingdom and distributed by Pragmatic Play, so it appears under Pragmatic branding in most casino lobbies. It was released on 14 December 2020, has a default RTP of 96.71% and a 2,100× max win, and it started a long series of fishing sequels. The Fisherman wild collecting fish cash values is the series’ signature mechanic. Our Reel Kingdom page covers the studio and its other games.

Which Pragmatic Play slot has the biggest max win?

In our checked data, Buffalo King has the highest cap at 93,750× the stake. Next come Sweet Bonanza 1000, Gates of Olympus 2500 and Sugar Rush 1000 at 25,000×, then Sweet Bonanza at 21,100×. A cap is the most the game can pay on one spin or feature, and reaching it is very rare. Our explainer on max win caps shows what those figures mean at real stakes.

Can you buy bonus rounds on Pragmatic Play slots in the UK?

No, British players are not offered feature buys on Pragmatic Play slots or any other studio’s games. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins have not been offered to British players, because the Commission said they risked breaching its rules on game information and chasing losses. Versions of the same games elsewhere may show a buy button, but UK versions do not. Read more in our page on buying bonus rounds on UK slots.

What is the maximum stake on a Pragmatic Play slot in the UK?

The most you can stake is £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, or £2 a spin if you are aged 18 to 24. These Gambling Commission limits apply to every online slot, including Pragmatic Play’s, and any optional higher-stake mode such as an ante bet counts towards them. They do not apply to Pragmatic’s live casino tables. Our maximum stake on a UK slot page explains how the game cycle is defined.

Does Pragmatic Play make live casino games?

Yes, Pragmatic Play runs a live casino alongside its slots. Its range includes Mega Wheel, Mega Roulette, Sweet Bonanza CandyLand, Money Time, PowerUP Roulette, ONE Blackjack and Speed games, and it names Bucharest as the studio its roulette is broadcast from. Mega Wheel pays up to 500× the bet, by the studio’s own figures. Our Pragmatic Play Live page covers the tables and shows in detail.

Can I play Pragmatic Play slots for free?

Many UK casinos offer demo versions of Pragmatic Play slots, but you still have to verify your age before you can open them. Demo games use the same rules and symbols as the real version, so they are a sensible way to see how volatile a game feels without spending money. They do not show which RTP version a casino runs for real-money play. Our demo play guide explains what UK rules require.
