Deuces Wild video poker
Deuces Wild video poker is draw poker where all four twos are wild, so the lowest paying hand is three of a kind and the top hands include five of a kind and four deuces. Its return swings more with the pay table than any other common game, from over 100% on paper down to under 95%, so reading the pay table is the whole job.
Key takeaways
- All four 2s act as any card, so the pay table starts at three of a kind rather than a pair.
- Full-pay Deuces Wild returns 100.76% only with flawless strategy; most tables pay much less, so check the help screen.
- The four-of-a-kind payout drives about a third of the return; a 5 there is the mark of a strong table.
- Strategy depends on how many deuces you hold: never throw a deuce away.
- Swings are wilder than Jacks or Better because so much value sits in rare hands.

How Deuces Wild video poker works
Deuces Wild uses a standard 52-card deck, deals five cards, and lets you hold any of them before one draw, exactly like Jacks or Better. The difference is that every 2 can stand in for any card you need. A hand of 2♣ 7♥ 7♠ 9♦ K♣ is three sevens; 2♦ 2♥ 9♠ 9♣ Q♥ is four nines; and 2♠ J♥ Q♥ K♥ A♥ is a wild royal flush.
Wild cards make strong hands far more common, so the pay table is rebuilt around that. A pair or two pair pays nothing at all. The table starts at three of a kind and adds two hands you can’t make in natural poker: five of a kind and four deuces. It also splits the royal flush into a natural royal (no deuces) and a wild royal (made with at least one deuce). Our video poker hub lists every variant if you want to compare.
Because a third of all deals contain at least one deuce, you spend more of your time deciding what to do with a wild card than with a pair. That changes how the game feels and how the strategy works, which we cover below.
The full-pay Deuces Wild pay table and how often each hand lands
The best-known version is called ‘full pay’. The table below shows its payouts per coin (at max coins) next to how often each final hand appears with perfect strategy, taken from the Wizard of Odds full-pay Deuces Wild return table (opens in a new tab). The last column shows how much of the total return each hand supplies.
| Hand | Pays | Chance per hand | Share of return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural royal flush | 800 | about 1 in 45,300 | 1.77% |
| Four deuces | 200 | about 1 in 4,900 | 4.07% |
| Wild royal flush | 25 | about 1 in 557 | 4.49% |
| Five of a kind | 15 | about 1 in 312 | 4.80% |
| Straight flush | 9 | about 1 in 240 | 3.75% |
| Four of a kind | 5 | 6.49% | 32.47% |
| Full house | 3 | 2.12% | 6.37% |
| Flush | 2 | 1.68% | 3.36% |
| Straight | 2 | 5.61% | 11.21% |
| Three of a kind | 1 | 28.47% | 28.47% |
| Nothing | 0 | 54.69% | 0% |
| Total | 100% | 100.76% |
Look at the four-of-a-kind row. It lands about once every 15 hands and supplies nearly a third of everything the game pays back. Three of a kind lands more than one hand in four but only returns your stake. Strip those two rows out and the rest of the game is mostly rare hands, which is where the big swings come from.
Deuces Wild odds: what each pay table really returns
Deuces Wild pay tables vary more than most. Some trim the four-of-a-kind payout from 5 to 4 and try to make up for it with a bigger full house and flush, others shave the wild royal or five of a kind. The returns below are from Wizard of Odds’ summary of video poker returns (opens in a new tab), all assuming optimal play for that exact table.
| Pay table | Return | House edge | Average cost per 1,000 hands at 50p |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25/15/9/5/3/2 (full pay) | 100.76% | none on paper | None on average, but only with flawless play |
| 25/15/11/4/4/3 | 99.96% | 0.04% | 20p |
| 25/16/10/4/4/3 (Not So Ugly Ducks) | 99.73% | 0.27% | £1.35 |
| 25/15/10/4/4/3 | 99.42% | 0.58% | £2.90 |
| 20/12/9/5/3/2 | 98.94% | 1.06% | £5.30 |
| 20/12/10/4/4/3 | 97.58% | 2.42% | £12.10 |
| 20/10/8/4/4/3 | 95.96% | 4.04% | £20.20 |
| 25/15/10/4/3/2 | 94.82% | 5.18% | £25.90 |
The last row is the trap. It looks almost identical to the full-pay table at a glance, with the same 25 and 15 at the top, yet a 4 for four of a kind and a 3 and 2 lower down drop the return by nearly six points. That is the difference between an average cost of nothing and an average cost of about £26 per 1,000 hands at 50p.
A return over 100% is a theoretical figure for perfect play over millions of hands. It doesn’t make winning likely: real sessions swing widely, small strategy errors pull the figure below 100%, and full-pay tables are rarely found. Treat any play as entertainment that costs money.
How often you are dealt deuces
Counting the combinations shows why the strategy is organised around wild cards. Of the 2,598,960 possible deals, the number holding each count of deuces is the ways to pick that many 2s multiplied by the ways to fill the rest of the hand from the other 48 cards.
| Deuces dealt | Combinations | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| None | 1,712,304 | 65.9% |
| One | 778,320 | 29.9% |
| Two | 103,776 | 4.0% |
| Three | 4,512 | 0.17% |
| Four | 48 | 1 in 54,145 |
So about one deal in three gives you at least one wild card. Four deuces on the deal is very rare, and most four-deuce hands (about one in 4,900 overall) arrive by holding two or three deuces and drawing. This is a good example of probability from simple counting: no simulation needed.
How to play Deuces Wild video poker online
- Open the help screen and write down the pays for wild royal, five of a kind, straight flush, four of a kind, full house and flush.
- Compare them with the returns table above so you know what you are paying.
- Set your coin value and number of coins; the 800 natural royal applies at max coins.
- Deal, then count your deuces first. That count decides which line of the strategy you use.
- Hold every deuce, plus any natural cards that make or build towards a paying hand.
- Draw, and let the game score the final hand with each deuce as its best value.
- Start each new hand yourself; autoplay isn’t allowed at UK-licensed casinos.
Deuces Wild strategy by number of deuces
The published optimal strategy for full pay is split into five short lists, one for each possible deuce count. The outline below follows that structure in plain words. It is a guide to the shape of the strategy, not a substitute for a full chart; see video poker strategy for how ranked lists work.
Four deuces
Hold all four and draw one. The hand already pays 200 whatever the fifth card is.
Three deuces
Keep a made wild royal or five of a kind. Otherwise hold the three deuces alone and draw two, because three deuces already guarantee four of a kind and give you real chances of five of a kind, a wild royal or the fourth deuce.
Two deuces
Keep any made four of a kind or better and four to a royal. Some suited, connected draws rank above the bare pair of deuces; failing those, hold just the two deuces and draw three.
One deuce
Keep made hands of four of a kind or better, four to a royal and full houses. Below those come straight and flush draws built with the deuce. Holding the deuce on its own is a long way down the list, but it beats throwing everything away.
No deuces
A natural royal, four to a royal and made straight flushes come first, then four of a kind, full house and three of a kind. With two pair, hold only one pair: two pair pays nothing here, and one pair with three new cards does better. When nothing on the list fits, redraw all five cards rather than clinging to a lone high card, which has no special value in this game.
Deuces Wild RTP, volatility and session budgets
The published standard deviation for full-pay Deuces Wild is about 5.18 units per hand, compared with about 4.42 for 9/6 Jacks or Better. In plain terms, results swing about 17% wider. That fits the table: more of the return sits in four deuces and natural royals, and more hands finish with nothing or with three of a kind returning only your stake.
For a budget, the expected value gives the average, and the swing tells you how far from it you may land. At 50p a hand on a 99.73% table, 1,000 hands cost about £1.35 on average, but a typical spread is around plus or minus £80 (5.18 × 50p × the square root of 1,000). Our volatility guide explains why a low edge doesn’t mean a smooth ride.
Long losing runs are normal in a game this swingy. Decide your session length and budget before you start, and use reality checks to keep track of time.
Common Deuces Wild mistakes and myths
- Playing it like Jacks or Better. Holding a high pair or two pair because they pay elsewhere wastes value; here they pay nothing until improved.
- Keeping kickers with deuces. A deuce plus an unrelated ace is usually worse than the deuce alone.
- Judging a table by the top line. The 800 and 200 are the same on almost every version. The four-of-a-kind, full house and flush lines decide the return.
- Believing deuces are ‘due’. Each hand is dealt from a fresh deck. The gambler’s fallacy applies to video poker exactly as it does to roulette.
- Thinking an over-100% table means profit. It means a tiny theoretical edge for perfect play over an enormous number of hands, with large swings along the way.
Deuces Wild in the UK: rules and what to check
At a UK-licensed casino, video poker sits under the same product rules as other online casino games: no autoplay since 17 January 2025, at least 5 seconds per game cycle for casino games other than slots, no playing several games at once, and your net spend and time shown in real time. Age and identity checks come before any deposit, and that includes free demo play. Read more on UK RTP information rules and age verification.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Deuces Wild video poker?
The RTP of Deuces Wild depends entirely on the pay table, from 100.76% for full pay down to about 94.82% for a common short-pay version, all assuming perfect strategy. The four-of-a-kind, full house and flush payouts tell you which version you have. Real results only approach these figures over very long play. Compare tables on our video poker RTP page and read how RTP is calculated.
Can you really get over 100% in Deuces Wild?
Full-pay Deuces Wild has a theoretical return of 100.76%, but only with flawless strategy over an enormous number of hands, and the table is rarely offered. Any strategy mistakes reduce the figure, and the large swings mean most sessions still finish down. It isn’t a way to make money. Treat it as entertainment with a cost, and read can you make money from casino games for the wider picture.
Why doesn’t a pair pay in Deuces Wild?
A pair doesn’t pay in Deuces Wild because the four wild cards make strong hands so common that the game would pay out far more than it takes if pairs counted. Any deuce plus a natural pair is already three of a kind, so the qualifying hand is raised to trips. The higher pays for four of a kind and above are balanced against that. Our pay tables guide explains how each line contributes.
Should I ever discard a deuce?
No, you should never discard a deuce in Deuces Wild. A wild card can complete any hand, so it is always worth more than whatever natural card might replace it. Even when a deuce looks out of place next to a made hand, the made hand already uses it. This is the one rule in published strategy charts with no exceptions. See video poker strategy and how to hold cards in video poker.
What is the difference between a natural royal and a wild royal?
A natural royal flush is A-K-Q-J-10 of one suit with no deuces and pays 800 per coin at max coins, while a wild royal uses at least one deuce and pays far less, 25 on full-pay tables. A wild royal is roughly 80 times more common. Both count as royal flushes for the hand ranking but are scored separately. Read more about the royal flush and what a royal is worth.
Is Deuces Wild better than Jacks or Better?
Deuces Wild can return more than Jacks or Better, but only on its best pay tables, and it swings more. Full-pay Deuces returns 100.76% and Not So Ugly Ducks about 99.73%, against 99.54% for 9/6 Jacks or Better, while short-pay Deuces can fall below 95%. Jacks or Better’s strategy is also easier to learn. Our Jacks or Better page and best video poker game answer compare them.
What does Not So Ugly Ducks mean?
Not So Ugly Ducks is the nickname for a Deuces Wild pay table that pays 16 for five of a kind, 10 for a straight flush, 4 for four of a kind, 4 for a full house and 3 for a flush. With optimal strategy it returns about 99.73%. It is one of the better tables you are likely to see, a little below full pay. Our video poker pay tables guide explains other common nicknames and lines.
Is Deuces Wild more volatile than other video poker?
Yes, Deuces Wild is more volatile than Jacks or Better, with a published standard deviation of about 5.18 units per hand against about 4.42. More of the return comes from rare hands such as four deuces and natural royals, so losing runs can be long. A larger budget per hour of play is sensible if you want to ride out swings. See variance and standard deviation and risk of ruin.
