Baccarat player pair and banker pair
Baccarat Player Pair and Banker Pair bets win when the first two cards of that hand share a rank, and most live tables pay 11 to 1. With eight decks a pair turns up 31 times in 415 deals, so the house keeps about 10.36% of every pair bet, roughly ten times the cost of a Banker bet.
Key takeaways
- A pair means two cards of the same rank, such as two queens; a 10 and a king don't count even though both score zero.
- With eight decks a pair lands 31 times in 415 (7.47%); with six decks 23 times in 311 (7.40%).
- At 11 to 1, Player Pair and Banker Pair have identical odds and a 10.36% edge on eight decks, or 11.25% on six.
- A £5 pair bet costs about 52p a hand on average, which is more than a £40 Banker bet.

How baccarat player pair and banker pair bets work
Every round of baccarat starts with two cards to the Player hand and two to the Banker hand. A Player Pair bet asks one thing: will the two Player cards share a rank? A Banker Pair bet asks the same about the Banker's two cards. Nothing else matters. The pair bet is settled whether Player wins, Banker wins or the hands tie, and any third card drawn under the third card rule is ignored on the standard version.
You can place a pair bet on its own at most tables, or alongside a main bet. Evolution's standard live Baccarat lists Player Pair and Banker Pair at 11 to 1 as built-in side bets. Because the pair is decided by the opening cards alone, it is one of the easiest baccarat side bets to follow, and one of the easiest to price.
What counts as a pair, and what doesn't
A pair is about rank, not points. This trips people up because baccarat scores every 10, jack, queen and king as zero. For a pair bet, the faces have to match.
| First two cards | Baccarat score | Pair bet result |
|---|---|---|
| 7 and 7 | 4 | Pair: wins |
| King and king (different suits) | 0 | Pair: wins |
| 10 and king | 0 | Not a pair: loses |
| Jack and queen | 0 | Not a pair: loses |
| Ace and ace | 2 | Pair: wins |
| 4 and 5 | 9 (a natural) | Not a pair: loses |
Suits don't matter on Player Pair or Banker Pair; matching suits only count on the separate Perfect Pair bet. If you need a reminder of the scoring, see how baccarat cards are counted.
Player pair odds: counting the cards in the shoe
You can work out the odds with nothing more than the size of the shoe. An eight-deck shoe has 416 cards, with 32 of each rank. Whatever the first card is, 31 of the remaining 415 cards match its rank. So the second card makes a pair 31 times in 415, or 7.47%. That is about one round in 13.4.
A six-deck shoe has 312 cards, 24 of each rank. After the first card, 23 of the 311 left match, so a pair comes up 23 times in 311, or 7.40%. Fewer decks make a pair slightly less likely, because removing one card takes a bigger bite out of a smaller stack of that rank.
| Decks | Cards in shoe | Matching cards after the first | Chance of a pair |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 416 | 31 of 415 | 7.47% |
| 6 | 312 | 23 of 311 | 7.40% |
Banker's first two cards come from the same shoe in the same random way, so the Banker Pair has exactly the same chance as the Player Pair. The drawing rules only affect third cards, which the standard pair bet ignores. For the method behind sums like these, see probability in casino games.
Banker pair and player pair house edge at 11 to 1
At 11 to 1 a winning £10 bet returns £120: your £10 back plus £110. Over 415 rounds of £10 (£4,150 staked), the pair lands 31 times and returns £3,720. The shortfall is £430, which is 10.36% of the money staked. On six decks, 23 wins in 311 rounds return £2,760 against £3,110 staked, a shortfall of 11.25%.
To break even, a bet that wins 31 times in 415 would need to pay about 12.4 to 1. The gap between that fair price and the 11 to 1 actually paid is the house edge.
What 100 pair bets look like
| Outcome | Average number | Profit or loss each | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pair (win) | 7.47 | +£55 | +£410.85 |
| No pair (lose) | 92.53 | −£5 | −£462.65 |
| Net over £500 staked | 100 | −£51.80 (10.36%) |
That is an average, not a forecast. In a real run of 100 rounds you might see three pairs or twelve, and the result could land well either side of the average. Over thousands of rounds, though, the loss tends towards about £10.36 per £100 bet.
The 9 to 1 version with a three-of-a-kind bonus
Not every pair bet works the same way. One eight-deck electronic baccarat game, analysed in published game maths, pays 9 to 1 for a pair but adds a large bonus if that hand's third card makes three of a kind: 75 to 1 on Player and 68 to 1 on Banker.
| Bet | Pair pays | Three of a kind pays | Chance of three of a kind | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Player Pair | 9 to 1 | 75 to 1 | 0.30% | 5.27% |
| Banker Pair | 9 to 1 | 68 to 1 | 0.28% | 8.57% |
Here the drawing rules do matter, because three of a kind needs a third card. Player draws on a fixed rule, so its three-of-a-kind chance (0.30%) is a little higher than Banker's (0.28%), and the Player bonus also pays more. That is why the two sides differ by more than three percentage points on this version, while the plain 11 to 1 version treats them identically. The pair-plus-trips version is cheaper than the standard bet, but you will need to check whether a table you play actually uses it.
Either Pair and Perfect Pair: the related bets
Evolution lists Either Pair and Perfect Pairs as optional side bets that players can switch on in the game settings.
- Either Pair wins if Player, Banker or both have a pair, usually at 5 to 1. On eight decks it wins 14.38% of the time and costs 13.71%; with six decks it wins 14.24% and costs 14.54%. Two separate pair chances of 7.47% would add to 14.94%, so both hands pair together about 0.56% of the time, and Either Pair pays once in that case.
- Perfect Pair needs the same rank and suit, such as two queens of hearts. Eight decks hold eight copies of each card, so after the first card 7 of 415 are identical: 1.69% for one hand. Published payouts include 25 to 1, with up to 200 to 1 for perfect pairs in both hands at Evolution. Rules for which hand counts vary, so take the price from the help screen.
Either Pair costs more than a single pair bet, even though it wins more often. Betting both Player Pair and Banker Pair separately at 11 to 1 costs 10.36% on each stake, which works out cheaper than Either Pair at 5 to 1.
What pair bets cost per hour at a live table
Evolution's standard Baccarat runs at around 48 seconds a round, or about 75 rounds an hour. Its Speed Baccarat takes about 27 seconds, which is roughly 133 rounds an hour. Expected loss is stake × edge × rounds, so the pace matters as much as the price.
| Stake per round | Cost per round | Standard pace (75 an hour) | Speed pace (133 an hour) |
|---|---|---|---|
| £1 pair bet | 10p | £7.77 | £13.81 |
| £5 pair bet | 52p | £38.85 | £69.06 |
| £10 Banker bet (for comparison) | 11p | £7.95 | £14.13 |
A £1 pair bet costs about as much per hour as a £10 Banker bet. Our cost per hour guide shows the same sum for blackjack and roulette, and Speed Baccarat explains the faster tables.
How to place a player pair or banker pair bet
- Open the table's help screen and confirm the pair payout (usually 11 to 1) and whether a three-of-a-kind bonus applies.
- Decide your pair stake before the session and keep it fixed; it should be a small part of your total budget.
- When the betting timer opens, place your chip on the P PAIR or B PAIR box (labels vary by studio).
- Add a main bet if you want one. The pair bet is settled separately from Banker, Player or Tie.
- Watch the first two cards of your chosen hand. Same rank wins; anything else loses, regardless of who wins the round.
- Use the re-bet button to repeat the stake if you wish; UK rules don't allow autoplay.
Pair bets at live tables: 11 to 1 and Red Envelope boosts
Many live baccarat tables pay 11 to 1 on pairs, but always check. Evolution's live baccarat lobby (opens in a new tab) lists Player Pair and Banker Pair at 11 to 1 on its standard game, plus a Red Envelope feature that can land on Tie, Banker Pair or Player Pair bets and raise the payout to as much as 88x. Between one and three envelopes show up in a round.
A feature like that changes the bet's return, but Evolution's public page gives no RTP for it, so don't assume it makes the pair bet cheap. Look for the RTP in the game's help screen, where UK-licensed games set out their rules. The squeeze, peek and lightning formats don't change the chance of a pair either; the cards are still drawn from the same shoe.
Common pair bet mistakes and myths
- Counting a 10 and a picture card as a pair. They are both zero in baccarat but different ranks.
- Waiting for a pair to be 'due'. The scorecard shows past results, not future ones. A pair is 31 in 415 every round on eight decks, as our page on the gambler's fallacy explains.
- Raising the pair stake after a loss. The 10.36% edge applies to every pound, so bigger stakes mean bigger average losses. A Martingale on an 11 to 1 bet runs into table limits and budget limits quickly.
- Assuming Either Pair is better because it hits twice as often. It pays less than half as much, and its edge is higher.
- Believing card counting makes pairs profitable online. RNG baccarat reshuffles every hand, and live tables generally use shuffling methods that defeat it. Our page on counting cards in baccarat explains the theory.
UK rules that apply to baccarat pair bets
Pair bets are part of a table game, so the £5 and £2 slot stake caps don't apply; each table sets its own limits. The UK rules for live casino do apply: autoplay is banned on all online casino games since 17 January 2025, a re-bet button is allowed, and non-slot games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle.
Your age and identity must be checked before you deposit, and since 31 October 2025 you are prompted to set a financial limit before your first deposit. Using a deposit limit or reality checks is a sensible way to keep high-edge side bets in proportion. Frequently asked questions
What are the odds of a player pair in baccarat?
On an eight-deck shoe the odds of a Player Pair are 31 in 415, or 7.47%, about once every 13.4 rounds. That comes from the 31 cards left in the shoe that match the first card's rank. With six decks it is 23 in 311, or 7.40%. The Banker Pair has exactly the same chance. For the general method, see our guide to casino probability, and the baccarat odds page for the main bets.
How much does Player Pair pay?
Player Pair usually pays 11 to 1, so a winning £10 bet returns £120 including your stake. That is the price on Evolution's standard live Baccarat. Some electronic versions pay 9 to 1 on a pair with a bonus of 75 to 1 if the third card makes three of a kind. Always check the help screen, because the payout decides the house edge. Our baccarat side bets page lists other pay tables.
Is Banker Pair the same as Player Pair?
At 11 to 1, yes: both have a 31 in 415 chance on eight decks and the same 10.36% edge, because the first two cards of each hand are dealt the same random way. They differ only on versions that pay a bonus for three of a kind, since the third card depends on the drawing rules. On one such version Player Pair costs 5.27% and Banker Pair 8.57%. See the third card rule for how draws work.
Does a 10 and a king count as a pair in baccarat?
No. A pair bet needs two cards of the same rank, such as two kings or two tens. A 10 and a king both score zero in baccarat, but they are different ranks, so the pair bet loses. Suits don't matter for Player Pair or Banker Pair, only for Perfect Pair. Our guide to how baccarat cards are counted explains scoring, and how to play baccarat covers the deal.
What is the house edge on baccarat pair bets?
At 11 to 1 the house edge is about 10.36% with eight decks and 11.25% with six. That means an average loss of around £10.36 for every £100 staked. The 9 to 1 version with a three-of-a-kind bonus costs less, at 5.27% for Player Pair. Either Pair at 5 to 1 costs 13.71%. Compare all baccarat bets on the baccarat house edge page or across games in our house edge table.
Is Either Pair better than Player Pair?
No, Either Pair costs more. It wins about 14.38% of the time with eight decks, almost twice as often as a single pair, but it usually pays only 5 to 1, giving a 13.71% house edge against 10.36% for a single pair at 11 to 1. When both hands pair it still pays once. If you like pair bets, a single Player Pair or Banker Pair is the cheaper choice. See our page on true odds against payouts.
Can you predict when a pair is coming in baccarat?
No. Each round's first two cards are a random draw, and past pairs or gaps don't change the 31 in 415 chance on an eight-deck shoe. Scorecards and road maps show history only. Online RNG baccarat reshuffles every hand, and live tables generally use shuffling methods that defeat tracking. Our pages on the gambler's fallacy and whether you can count cards in baccarat explain why.
Do pair bets win if my main bet loses?
Yes. Pair bets are settled on their own, so a Player Pair wins whenever the first two Player cards match, even if Banker wins the round or the hands tie. Your main bet is settled separately under the normal rules. That independence is why some players add a pair bet, but it doesn't reduce the cost: the 10.36% edge applies to the pair stake either way. See the Banker bet and Player bet pages for the main bets.
