Ante: meaning in casino games
An ante is a bet you must place before any cards are dealt. In traditional poker every player antes to build a pot; in casino poker games such as Casino Hold'em and Three Card Poker the ante is your opening stake against the dealer, and every later bet is sized as a multiple of it.
Key takeaways
- An ante is a compulsory bet placed before the deal.
- In casino poker, follow-up bets are set as multiples of the ante, such as a Call of 2x in Casino Hold'em.
- House edges in casino poker are usually quoted against the ante: 2.16% in common Casino Hold'em, 3.37% in Three Card Poker.
- Some slots use "Ante Bet" for an optional extra stake that changes the game; check the help screen.

What an ante is
In poker between players, an ante is a small forced bet that everyone puts in before a hand begins, so there is something to win from the first card. Casinos borrowed the word for their banked poker games. There, the ante is the stake you place to receive a hand, and the game's rules then offer you a choice: fold and lose the ante, or add a second bet to play on.
This glossary entry looks at how the ante works across the main casino poker games, what the house edge figures mean when they are quoted against the ante, and the different slot feature that shares the name.
The ante in each casino poker game
The table below summarises the standard rules analysed by Wizard of Odds. Pay tables and qualifying rules vary between versions, so always check the help screen of the game you are playing.
| Game | Second bet | Dealer qualifies with | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casino Hold'em | Call 2x ante | Pair of fours or better | 2.16% (common pay table) |
| Three Card Poker | Play 1x ante | Queen high or better | 3.37% (Ante and Play) |
| Caribbean Stud Poker | Raise 2x ante | Ace-king or better | 5.224% |
| Ultimate Texas Hold'em | Play 1x to 4x ante (Blind equal to ante) | Pair or better to open | 2.185% of the ante |
| Texas Hold'em Bonus (Las Vegas rules) | Flop 2x, Turn 1x, River 1x | Check the game's rules | 2.037% |
What happens to the ante when the dealer does not qualify
In Casino Hold'em, a non-qualifying dealer means the ante is paid from the ante pay table and the Call pushes. In Three Card Poker the ante pays even money and the Play bet pushes. In Caribbean Stud the ante pays even money and the Raise pushes. In Ultimate Texas Hold'em it works the other way round: if the dealer does not open, the ante pushes while the Blind and Play bets still settle.
Ante pay tables and ante bonuses
Some games pay extra on the ante for strong hands. The most common Casino Hold'em ante pay table, according to Wizard of Odds' Casino Hold'em analysis (opens in a new tab), pays 100 to 1 for a royal flush, 20 for a straight flush, 10 for four of a kind, 3 for a full house, 2 for a flush and 1 to 1 for anything else.
Three Card Poker adds an Ante Bonus that pays whatever the dealer holds: 5 to 1 for a straight flush, 4 to 1 for three of a kind and 1 to 1 for a straight on the most common table, as set out in Wizard of Odds' Three Card Poker guide (opens in a new tab). In Texas Hold'em Bonus the ante pays even money only with a straight or better and otherwise pushes.
Ante maths: edge against the ante and element of risk
Because you put in more money on hands you play, casino poker edges are usually given as a percentage of the ante. A second figure, the element of risk, divides the average loss by everything you bet. In Three Card Poker the edge is 3.37% of the ante but the element of risk is 2.01% of total money bet. Caribbean Stud is 5.224% against 2.555%.
- Find the game's house edge on the ante (for example 2.16% in common Casino Hold'em).
- Multiply by your ante: £10 × 2.16% = 21.6p expected loss per hand.
- Multiply by the hands you plan to play: 50 hands gives about £10.80.
- Remember that hands you call put extra money at risk, so the swings are larger than the ante suggests.
On the same £10 ante, Three Card Poker costs about 33.7p a hand and Caribbean Stud about 52p. Playing badly costs more: in Three Card Poker, copying the dealer's queen-high rule raises the edge to 3.45%, and playing every hand raises it to 7.65%. The strategy of playing queen-6-4 or better simply keeps the cost at its lowest; it does not remove the house edge.
Ante Bet on slots
Some slot developers use "Ante Bet" for something unrelated to poker: an optional extra stake that changes how the game plays. Pragmatic Play's Sweet Bonanza Xmas, for example, lists an RTP of 96.48%, or 96.51% with Ante Bet. What the extra stake costs and changes is set out in each game's help screen. Any Ante Bet counts towards the UK online slot stake limit of £5 per spin (£2 for 18 to 24s).

Frequently asked questions
What does ante mean in poker?
An ante is a compulsory bet every player makes before the cards are dealt, so each hand starts with money in the pot. It is different from blinds, which only some players post. In casino poker the ante is your opening stake against the dealer, and you then decide whether to fold or bet more. Our casino poker vs poker page explains the differences.
What happens to the ante if I fold?
You lose it. Folding in Casino Hold'em, Three Card Poker or Caribbean Stud gives up the ante and ends your part in the hand. That is why folding too often is costly, but so is playing every hand: in Three Card Poker, playing everything raises the house edge from 3.37% to 7.65%. See our Three Card Poker strategy page for the folding rule.
Is the house edge quoted on the ante or the total bet?
Usually on the ante. Casino poker edges like 2.16% for Casino Hold'em or 3.37% for Three Card Poker are average losses divided by the ante. The element of risk divides by the total amount bet, so it is lower: 2.01% for Three Card Poker. Both describe the same game from different angles. Our house edge by casino game page lists both where known.
What is the ante bonus in Three Card Poker?
It is an extra payment on the ante for a strong three-card hand, paid whatever the dealer holds. On the most common table it pays 5 to 1 for a straight flush, 4 to 1 for three of a kind and 1 to 1 for a straight. It is automatic, so you do not place a separate bet. Our Three Card Poker guide covers the full rules and payouts.
What is an Ante Bet on a slot?
On some slots, Ante Bet is an optional setting that adds to your stake in return for a change to the game. It has nothing to do with poker. Pragmatic Play lists Sweet Bonanza Xmas at 96.48% RTP, or 96.51% with Ante Bet. Check the game's help screen to see what it costs and does. Our RTP explained page covers what those percentages mean.
How big should my ante be?
Pick an ante you can afford to multiply. A hand you play puts three times the ante at risk in Casino Hold'em or Caribbean Stud (the ante plus a 2x bet), twice the ante in Three Card Poker, and up to six times in Ultimate Texas Hold'em once the Blind and a 4x Play bet are added. Set the session budget first and work back from it. Our choosing table limits guide shows how to match the table to your budget.
