Dolly: meaning in roulette

A dolly is the small marker a roulette croupier places on the winning number on the table layout once the ball settles. While the dolly sits on the table, nobody may place, collect or move a bet. It tells everyone which number won, and it stays put until losing chips are cleared and winners are paid.

Key takeaways

  • The dolly marks the winning number on the layout after each spin.
  • While it is on the table, no bets can be placed, moved or collected.
  • It comes off only after losing bets are swept and winners are paid.
  • It records a result; it has no effect on where the next ball lands.

What a dolly means at the roulette table

In roulette, the dolly is a physical marker that the croupier sets down on the square of the winning number. Wikipedia's roulette article (opens in a new tab) describes it in exactly those terms: once the ball comes to rest, the dealer places a marker, also known as a dolly, on that number on the layout. It is the casino's way of saying, without any argument, which number has just won.

The word is table slang rather than a rule-book term, so you may also hear it called the win marker or simply the marker. Whatever the name, its job is the same: it freezes the table so that the croupier can settle bets in an orderly way.

Where the dolly fits in a roulette round

Every spin follows the same pattern, and the dolly marks the switch from betting to paying. Players bet until the croupier calls “no more bets” (rien ne va plus in French). After the ball drops, the order runs like this:

  1. The ball settles in a pocket and the croupier announces the number and colour.
  2. The dolly goes down on that number on the table layout.
  3. Losing chips are swept away by hand or with a rake.
  4. The croupier works out and pays the winning inside and outside bets.
  5. The dolly is lifted, and players may collect winnings and bet on the next spin.

Winning chips stay on the layout until the player picks them up, so if you leave a winning chip where it is, it rides on the next spin. That is worth knowing before the dolly comes off.

Dolly example: a £5 straight-up win on 17

Say you have £5 on 17 as a straight up bet, £10 on red and £5 on the first dozen. The ball lands in red 17. The dolly goes on 17 and the croupier settles each bet in turn:

How bets are settled while the dolly marks 17 (single-zero wheel)
BetStakeCovers 17?PaysResult
Straight up on 17£5Yes35 to 1£175 win, £5 stake stays
Red£10Yes1 to 1£10 win, £10 stake stays
First dozen (1–12)£5No2 to 1£5 lost, swept
Total£20£180 profit on the spin

The dolly does not change these numbers. A straight-up bet still wins 1 time in 37 on a single-zero wheel, and every standard bet carries the same 2.70% house edge. Over many spins, £20 a spin spread like this costs about 54p a spin on average (£20 × 2.70%), whatever happened on the last one.

Why the dolly rule exists

The rule protects both sides. Once the result is known, a player who could slide a chip onto the winning number would be past-posting, which is cheating. Equally, the croupier needs a clear table to pay the right amounts. With the dolly down, the layout is locked: no new chips, no moved chips and no chips taken back.

Is there a dolly in online and live roulette?

In live roulette streamed from a studio, the croupier works the wheel but your chips are digital, so the betting window simply closes on screen and the result is highlighted on your layout. The effect is the same as a dolly: you cannot bet until settlement is complete. In RNG roulette there is no croupier at all, and the software shows the result and pays instantly. Our guide to RNG and live roulette explains how the two work.

Since 17 January 2025, UK rules also require non-slot casino games to allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, and autoplay is banned for all online casino games. A re-bet button is allowed, because you still press it yourself each round.

Dolly myths: does the marked number mean anything next spin?

No. The dolly records history; it does not predict anything. Each spin is independent, so a number that has just won is no more and no less likely to land again. Thinking otherwise is the gambler’s fallacy, and boards of hot and cold numbers are the same idea in a different form. Wizard of Odds’ roulette basics (opens in a new tab) give the fixed chances for every bet.

Frequently asked questions

What is a dolly in roulette?

A dolly is the marker the croupier places on the winning number on the roulette layout after the ball settles. It shows everyone which number won and signals that betting is closed. While it is on the table, players may not place, collect or move chips. The croupier then sweeps losing bets, pays winners and lifts the dolly so the next round can begin. See how to play roulette for the whole round.

Can I place a bet while the dolly is on the table?

No, you can’t place, move or take back any bet while the dolly is down. The table is frozen so the croupier can settle bets without chips changing position after the result is known. Once the dolly is lifted, you can pick up winnings and bet on the next spin. Winning chips you leave on the layout stay in play, so collect them if you don’t want them to ride. Our roulette table layout guide shows where each bet sits.

Why is it called a dolly?

Dolly is long-standing casino slang for the win marker, much as a croupier’s rake or a shoe have their own table names. The name carries no technical meaning; what matters is the job it does, marking the winning number and locking the layout. You may also hear it called the marker or win marker. Our casino glossary covers other table slang, including the croupier who handles it.

Does live online roulette use a dolly?

Live roulette uses an on-screen equivalent rather than a physical dolly on your chips. The croupier spins a real wheel, but your bets are digital, so the betting window shuts and the winning number is highlighted on your screen while bets settle. You cannot bet again until the next round opens. The odds match the land-based game: 1 in 37 for a straight up on a single-zero wheel. See our live roulette guide.

Does the number under the dolly affect the next spin?

No, the number under the dolly has no influence on the next spin. Roulette results are independent, so every number keeps the same chance each time: 1 in 37 on a single-zero wheel. Believing a recent number is due, or due to stop, is the gambler’s fallacy. No reading of past results changes the 2.70% house edge. Our page on independent events explains the maths.

What should I do if the croupier misses my winning bet?

Speak up straight away, ideally while the dolly is still on the table. At that point the layout is untouched, so the croupier and the pit supervisor can see exactly what was on the number. Once the dolly is lifted and players start betting again, it becomes much harder to check. Online, contact the casino’s support team with the round details. Our guide to casino complaints covers the next steps if a dispute isn’t settled.
