Full house: poker and bingo meaning

A full house in poker is a five-card hand made of three cards of one rank and two of another, such as three kings and two sevens. In UK bingo the same words mean something different: covering all 15 numbers on one 90-ball ticket, which wins the main prize of the game.

Key takeaways

  • In poker, a full house beats a flush and loses to four of a kind.
  • Dealt five cards, you get a full house about once in every 694 hands (3,744 of 2,598,960 deals).
  • Its payout varies hugely by game: 3 to 1 in some casino poker bets, 9 for 1 on 9/6 Jacks or Better.
  • In 90-ball bingo, a full house means all 15 numbers on one ticket.

What a full house is in poker

A full house combines three of a kind with a pair. Players name it by the trips first: K-K-K-7-7 is ‘kings full of sevens’. When two full houses meet, the higher three-card set wins, so 8-8-8-2-2 beats 7-7-7-A-A. The pair only matters if the trips match, which can happen in games with shared community cards.

It ranks seventh from the bottom in standard poker order: above a straight and a flush, below four of a kind, a straight flush and a royal flush. The term lives in our casino glossary with the other hand names.

Full house odds: how often it is dealt

The odds come from counting. A standard deck can be dealt 2,598,960 different five-card hands. For a full house you pick the rank of the trips (13 choices), three of its four suits (4 ways), a different rank for the pair (12 choices) and two of its four suits (6 ways): 13 × 4 × 12 × 6 = 3,744 hands.

In video poker you get to hold and draw, and in Hold’em-style games you choose the best five from more cards, so a full house turns up more often than the dealt-hand figure. The ranking never changes, though.

Full house payouts in casino poker and video poker

What a full house pays depends entirely on the game and the bet. These are the standard pay tables quoted by Wizard of Odds:

What a full house pays
Game and betFull house paysHouse edge of the game or bet
9/6 Jacks or Better (video poker)9 for 199.54% return
8/5 Jacks or Better8 for 197.3% return
Caribbean Stud, Raise bet7 to 15.224%
Let It Ride11 to 13.51%
Casino Hold’em, Ante (common table)3 to 12.16%
Ultimate Texas Hold’em, Blind bet3 to 12.185% of the Ante

The video poker rows show why the full house matters to players reading pay tables. The ‘9/6’ and ‘8/5’ names are the full house and flush payouts, and cutting them from 9 and 6 to 8 and 5 drops the return from 99.54% to 97.3% with perfect play. On £1 hands that is the difference between losing about 46p and about £2.70 per 100 hands on average. Our guide to video poker pay tables and the Jacks or Better 9/6 analysis (opens in a new tab) go further.

Full house in UK bingo

In 90-ball bingo, each ticket holds 15 numbers in three rows of five. Prizes usually go in stages: one line, then two lines on the same ticket, then the full house, when all 15 numbers on one ticket have been called. A 90-number ticket guide (opens in a new tab) sets out this layout. The full house is the last and largest prize of the game.

Your chance of calling it first depends on how many tickets are in play, since bingo is equal-chance gaming: every ticket has the same chance. Buying more tickets raises your share and your spend in equal measure. Our online bingo page covers UK games in more detail.

Full house mistakes and how to read a pay table

  1. Find the full house line on the game’s pay table or help screen.
  2. Compare it with the same game elsewhere: in Jacks or Better, 9 is better than 8.
  3. Check whether the payout is ‘for 1’ (your stake is included) or ‘to 1’ (paid on top of your stake).
  4. Remember a big payout on a rare hand does not change the game’s overall house edge.

A full house is not ‘due’ after a run of poor hands. Every deal is independent, and the chance resets each time.

Frequently asked questions

Does a full house beat a flush?

Yes, a full house beats a flush in every standard poker ranking. In five-card deals it is the rarer hand: 3,744 possible full houses against 5,108 flushes, which is why it ranks higher. It loses to four of a kind, a straight flush and a royal flush. Our poker hand rankings page lists all ten hands in order with examples.

What are the odds of getting a full house?

The odds of being dealt a full house in five cards are about 1 in 694, or 0.144%. That comes from 3,744 full-house hands out of 2,598,960 possible deals. Games where you draw, or pick five cards from seven, produce full houses more often. For the counting method behind figures like this, see our guide to casino probability.

Which full house wins if two players have one?

The full house with the higher three of a kind wins, so queens full of twos beats jacks full of aces. Only if the trips are the same rank, which needs shared cards, does the pair decide it. In house-banked games such as Casino Hold’em, you are comparing your hand with the dealer’s rather than other players’, but the same tie-break applies.

What is a full house in bingo?

A full house in bingo means every number on one ticket has been called. In 90-ball bingo that is all 15 numbers, and it is usually the biggest prize after the one-line and two-line stages. In 75-ball games, pattern prizes are common instead. Our 75-ball bingo page explains how those patterns and cards differ.

Why does the full house payout matter in video poker?

It matters because the full house payout is one of the main levers that sets a video poker game’s return. Jacks or Better paying 9 for a full house and 6 for a flush returns 99.54% with perfect strategy, while the 8 and 5 version returns 97.3%. Always read the pay table before choosing a machine; our Jacks or Better page shows the full table.

Is there a full house in blackjack or roulette?

No, full house is a poker and bingo term and has no meaning in blackjack or roulette. You may see it in poker-based side bets on other tables, such as the 21+3 bet in blackjack, which uses poker hands made from your cards and the dealer’s up card. Our blackjack side bets guide covers how those pay and what they cost.
