Is Lightning Dice worth playing?

Is Lightning Dice worth playing? It is worth playing only as paid entertainment: three dice decide every round, the house keeps an edge on every bet, and the Lightning multipliers make results swing hard without making the game cheaper. Below are the true odds of each total, a fair-payout table to compare with the paytable, and the cost in pounds.

Key takeaways

  • Lightning Dice is Evolution's live dice game: three dice fall through a Lightning Tower and you bet on the total from 3 to 18.
  • Two to four bet spots get Lightning multipliers each round, up to 1,000x, so results swing far more than in plain sic bo.
  • Totals of 10 and 11 land 1 time in 8; totals of 3 and 18 land 1 time in 216.
  • Evolution's public game page gives no RTP, so read it in the game's help screen before you stake anything.
  • If you want a dice bet with a known, low cost, sic bo Big or Small carries a 2.78% house edge.

Is Lightning Dice worth playing? The short answer

Lightning Dice is worth playing if you want a fast, lively live game show and you accept that every round costs you something on average. It is not worth playing as a way to make money, because no bet on the board has a positive expected value and the multipliers do not change that.

The game is made by Evolution. A presenter drops three dice into a glass tower, they bounce down to the base, and the total decides the winners. Before the drop, between two and four bet spots are struck with multipliers. That is the hook: a small stake on a single total can occasionally return a very large amount. The price of that hook is that most rounds pay nothing on the spot you picked.

Our full guide to Lightning Dice rules and bets covers the table in detail. This page answers the narrower question of value: what the odds are, what you can and can’t know about the cost, and who the game suits.

How a Lightning Dice round works

According to Evolution’s Lightning Dice page (opens in a new tab), each round follows the same pattern. You can place chips on as many outcomes as you like.

  1. Place your bets on one or more totals from 3 to 18, or on Low, High, Any Double or Any Triple.
  2. Betting closes and two to four bet spots are struck at random by Lightning multipliers.
  3. The presenter loads three dice at the top of the Lightning Tower and pulls a lever.
  4. The dice tumble through a three-section maze while close-up cameras follow them.
  5. The dice settle at the base and the total is shown; winning spots with a multiplier pay the boosted amount.

Evolution’s page does not define the exact ranges for Low and High, or say whether Any Double includes triples. Those details, and the base payout for each spot, are in the game’s own rules panel, so open it before your first bet.

Lightning Dice odds: how often each total lands

The dice have no memory and the probability of each total comes from counting. Three six-sided dice give 6 × 6 × 6 = 216 equally likely results. A total of 3 needs 1-1-1, so it has one way to happen. A total of 10 can be made 27 ways, so it is 27 times more likely. The table also shows the payout that would be exactly fair, meaning zero house edge: fair payout = (216 ÷ ways) − 1 to 1.

Three-dice totals: ways, chance and the fair payout
TotalWays out of 216ChanceAbout 1 inFair payout (no edge)
3 or 1810.46%216215 to 1
4 or 1731.39%7271 to 1
5 or 1662.78%3635 to 1
6 or 15104.63%21.620.6 to 1
7 or 14156.94%14.413.4 to 1
8 or 13219.72%10.39.3 to 1
9 or 122511.57%8.67.6 to 1
10 or 112712.50%87 to 1

Any Triple (three matching dice) has 6 ways, so it lands 6 times in 216, or 1 in 36. Exactly two matching dice can happen 90 ways (41.67%). Use this table as a yardstick: any base payout below the fair figure is where the house edge sits. Our page on dice probability shows how the counts are built.

Do the Lightning multipliers make it better value?

Not by themselves. A Lightning multiplier has to be paid for somewhere, and in Evolution’s Lightning series it is paid for with lower base payouts. Lightning Roulette is the clearest published example: an unboosted straight-up number pays 29 to 1 instead of the usual 35 to 1, which is how that game funds its 50x to 500x Lucky Numbers. Our answer on whether Lightning Roulette is worth playing works through it.

The multipliers move value from ordinary wins into rare big wins. Total return over time is the average of everything, so the game can feel generous when a 1,000x strike lands and stingy the rest of the time, while the long-run cost stays whatever the RTP says. That is the meaning of high volatility: wider swings, same edge.

Multipliers are chosen at random after betting closes. You can’t see them in advance, and a spot that was struck last round is no more or less likely to be struck again.

Lightning Dice RTP and house edge: what is published

Evolution’s public page for Lightning Dice gives no RTP, no base paytable and no list of multiplier values, so we won’t quote one. Gambling Commission rules require the game to show its RTP or likelihood of winning, plus its rules and payouts, before you play, under RTS 3 of the technical standards (opens in a new tab). In practice that means the figure is in the help or info panel inside the game.

Once you have it, the house edge is simply 100% minus the RTP, and your average cost is stake × edge. Our page on game show RTP explains why shows often list several RTPs, one per bet.

What Lightning Dice costs per round and per hour

Because the RTP has to come from the game, here is the method rather than a made-up number. Expected loss per round = stake × house edge. Expected loss per hour = stake × house edge × rounds per hour. The cost per hour guide gives more examples.

Average cost of a £2 bet at different house edges, 60 rounds an hour
House edgeCost per £2 roundCost per hourCost over 3 hours
2.78% (sic bo Big or Small)5.6p£3.34£10.01
4%8p£4.80£14.40
8%16p£9.60£28.80
12.50% (sic bo total of 10 at 6 to 1)25p£15.00£45.00

The 60 rounds an hour is an assumption for the arithmetic, not a figure from Evolution; count your own rounds if you want precision. The averages hide big swings in both directions, especially with multipliers in play, so a single hour can finish well up or well down.

Lightning Dice compared with sic bo odds

Classic sic bo also uses three dice, but its paytables are published widely, so you can see the cost of each bet. Wizard of Odds’ sic bo analysis (opens in a new tab) puts Big and Small, which lose to any triple, at a 2.78% edge, while a total of 10 or 11 paying 6 to 1 carries 12.50%. A Specific Triple at 150 to 1 costs 30.09%.

The sic bo house edge page lists every bet. If cost per hour matters most to you, the even-money sic bo bets are the cheaper way to bet on three dice.

Who Lightning Dice suits, and who should skip it

Advantages

  • Simple to follow: pick a total and watch three dice.
  • Short, visual rounds with a presenter.
  • Multipliers add rare large wins on small stakes.

Drawbacks

  • No RTP on the public game page, so you must look it up in-game.
  • Totals miss most of the time; long losing runs are normal.
  • Easy to spread chips across many totals and multiply your cost.

It suits someone with a fixed entertainment budget who enjoys the show. It does not suit anyone hoping to grind out a profit, or anyone chasing a multiplier after losses. Set a deposit limit first and stop when the budget is gone.

Lightning Dice myths and facts

  • Myth: a total that hasn’t landed for a while is due. Fact: each drop is a fresh 216-way event; see independent events.
  • Myth: covering lots of totals guarantees a win. Fact: it raises how often you win something, but every chip still carries the edge, so cost rises with each one.
  • Myth: the tower can be read. Fact: the maze is there to randomise the bounce, and the result is settled on camera.
  • Myth: a big multiplier means the game is loose. Fact: multipliers are funded by base payouts; the RTP is what tells you the long-run return.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Lightning Dice?

Evolution’s public game page doesn’t publish it, so check the help screen inside the game before you play. UK rules require the RTP or likelihood of winning to be shown before you stake. Once you have the figure, subtract it from 100% to get the house edge, then multiply by your stake to see the average cost per round. Our RTP explainer covers what the number does and doesn’t tell you about a single session.

What is the most likely total in Lightning Dice?

Totals of 10 and 11 are the most likely, each landing 27 times in 216 drops, or 12.50%. That is 1 in 8. Totals of 9 and 12 follow at 25 ways each. The least likely are 3 and 18, with one way each. Being likely doesn’t make a total good value; that depends on how its payout compares with the fair figure. Our dice probability page shows the full counts.

How do Lightning multipliers work in Lightning Dice?

After betting closes, two to four bet spots are struck at random with multipliers of up to 1,000x, and a winning bet on a struck spot is paid at the boosted rate. The multipliers are random each round and can’t be predicted. In Evolution’s Lightning games they are funded by lower base payouts, so they add swing rather than value. See our Lightning games guide for how the series works.

Is Lightning Dice better than sic bo?

It is more volatile than sic bo, but not provably better value. Standard sic bo has published paytables, and its Big and Small bets carry a 2.78% edge, which is low for a dice game. Lightning Dice’s cost depends on the RTP in its help screen. If you want the cheapest dice bet, Big or Small usually wins; if you want rare big multipliers, Lightning Dice offers them. Compare the bets on our sic bo bets page.

Can you win money on Lightning Dice in the long run?

No, not on average: every bet returns less than it costs over time, and the multipliers don’t change that. Short sessions can finish ahead because results vary widely, but the more rounds you play, the closer your results tend to drift towards the built-in edge. Treat any stake as the price of entertainment. Our answer on making money from casino games explains why.

Is there a strategy for Lightning Dice?

There is no strategy that removes the edge, but you can control cost. Bet on fewer spots, keep stakes small relative to your budget, and use the bets with the highest RTP shown in the help screen. Avoid staking plans that raise bets after losses, because they speed up losses without changing the odds. Our game show strategy guide covers budget-led play for live shows.

Could Lightning Dice be rigged?

There is no evidence it is rigged; the result comes from real dice filmed falling through a tower. Live games offered to British players are covered by Gambling Commission rules, and game rules and payouts must be available before you play. Unfair-looking streaks are normal in random games. Our answer on whether live casino games are rigged explains how live results are checked and recorded.

What is the minimum bet on Lightning Dice?

Table limits are set by the game and the casino, so check the limits shown on the table before you join. Live dice games aren’t covered by the £5 and £2 online slot stake limits, so maximums can be higher than on slots. Choose a stake that lets your budget last for the session you plan. Our guide to live casino limits explains how minimums and maximums are shown.
