Dead or Alive slot review

The Dead or Alive slot is NetEnt’s 2009 western: 5 reels, 3 rows, 9 paylines, high volatility and an RTP of up to 96.82%. Almost all of its appeal sits in one bonus, 12 free spins where every wild sticks and every win is doubled, and that is why the game pays in rare bursts rather than steady trickles.

Why the Dead or Alive slot still matters

Dead or Alive dates from 2009, which makes it an old game by online standards, yet it is still widely reviewed and compared. The reason is its design: a plain-looking base game with very few lines, and a single bonus capable of large results. It is often used as an example of a high-volatility slot, and NetEnt later built a sequel, Dead or Alive 2, around the same idea.

This review explains what the published specifications tell you, how the sticky wild free spins work, what the RTP means in pounds and how UK rules shape the game today. It sits within our slot reviews section, alongside other western titles.

Note the words “highest version”. The 96.82% is the best setting available, and operators can choose to run the game at a lower one. The figure on the casino’s own info screen is the one that applies to you. Our guide to UK RTP display rules explains why that information must be there before you play.

How the Dead or Alive features work

The base game is a straightforward 9-line slot. Wins pay along fixed paylines from left to right, and a wild symbol substitutes for regular symbols. The excitement comes from the scatters.

The crossed-pistol scatter

Landing three or more crossed-pistol scatter symbols awards 12 free spins. Scatters count wherever they appear, so they don’t need to sit on a payline.

Sticky wilds and doubled wins

Inside the free spins, two things change. First, every wild that lands becomes a sticky wild and stays in its position until the round ends. Second, every win in the round is doubled. Because wilds accumulate, each later spin starts with more substitutes already in place, so the last few spins of a round with several sticky wilds can be the most valuable.

Five extra spins

If a sticky wild has landed on each of the five reels, the game awards 5 extra spins. With a wild locked on every reel, every one of those spins has a substitute available in each column, so paylines are far easier to complete.

As a simple illustration (not a paytable figure): if a line would pay 4 times your line bet in the base game, the same line pays 8 times in free spins because of the doubling. Feature descriptions such as PokerListings’ Dead or Alive page (opens in a new tab) describe the same set-up.

Why Dead or Alive is so volatile

Two design choices push the risk up. With only 9 lines, the base game completes wins less often than a ways-to-win slot, so the return relies heavily on the bonus. And the bonus itself varies enormously: a round where wilds land early and spread across the reels can pay many times more than a round where no wilds arrive at all.

The descriptions in the right-hand column are general, because NetEnt doesn’t publish bonus distribution data. What the table shows is why two bonuses on the same game can feel completely different. Read more on variance and standard deviation for the maths behind that spread.

Dead or Alive RTP in pounds: 10p, 50p and £1 budgets

At the top 96.82% setting, the average cost of play is 3.18% of everything you stake. With a £20 budget the expected loss on £20 staked is about 64p (£20 × 3.18%) whatever the stake. The difference is time.

A £20 budget on Dead or Alive (96.82% version)
Stake per spinSpins if no wins came backAverage cost per spinExpected loss over 300 spins
10p2000.32p£0.95
50p401.59p£4.77
£1203.18p£9.54

The last column assumes you keep playing returned winnings until 300 spins are done; at £1 that means £300 staked, which costs £9.54 on average. On a game this volatile, 20 or 40 spins is a short session and many end without free spins. A 10p stake is the only level where £20 gives the scatters a reasonable number of chances. The expected value page explains the formula used here.

Dead or Alive myths and facts

  • Myth: the free spins are “due” after a long drought. Each spin is independent; a drought doesn’t make the bonus more likely. See the gambler’s fallacy.
  • Myth: higher stakes trigger the bonus more often. Stake size scales the wins, not the chance of landing scatters.
  • Myth: a casino can switch the game to tight mode after a big win. UK technical standards bar online games from adjusting outcomes to hit a target return.
  • Fact: the RTP can differ between casinos. The 96.82% figure is the highest version, so check what each site shows.

How to play Dead or Alive online in the UK

  1. Join a UK-licensed casino and pass age and identity verification.
  2. Respond to the financial limit prompt before your first deposit.
  3. Open Dead or Alive and check the RTP shown in the game information.
  4. Set your stake: no more than £5 a spin if you are 25 or over, or £2 if you are 18–24.
  5. Spin manually; each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds and autoplay is unavailable.
  6. Land three or more crossed-pistol scatters to start the 12 free spins.
  7. End the session at your planned budget, regardless of whether the bonus has appeared.

UK rules for Dead or Alive

Since 31 October 2021, British online slots have had no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop and a minimum 2.5-second spin, and they can’t celebrate returns lower than your stake. Dead or Alive was designed long before these rules, so the UK version you see today is shaped by them. Stake caps followed in 2025: £5 for players aged 25 and over from 9 April and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds from 21 May, as the Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out.

More on each rule is on our autoplay ban and slot stake limits pages. For general slot maths beyond this game, Wizard of Odds’ slots section (opens in a new tab) is a useful independent reference.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Dead or Alive?

Dead or Alive’s highest RTP version is 96.82%, which works out at an average cost of £3.18 for every £100 staked over the long run. Casinos can run lower versions of the same game, so always check the figure in the game’s information screen at the casino you use. The number is a long-term average and says little about one session. Our slot RTP guide explains how to read it.

How do you trigger free spins on Dead or Alive?

You trigger the free spins by landing three or more crossed-pistol scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. That awards 12 free spins, during which every wild becomes sticky and every win is doubled. A sticky wild on each of the five reels adds 5 more spins. Scatters don’t need to be on a payline. Our guide to scatter symbols covers how they differ from ordinary symbols.

Is Dead or Alive high volatility?

Yes, Dead or Alive is a high-volatility slot. Its 9 paylines produce fewer base-game wins than most modern slots, and much of the return comes through the sticky wild free spins, which vary hugely from round to round. Expect long quiet runs, and budget with that in mind. Small stakes stretch a budget over more spins. Read our high volatility slots guide for more.

What is the max win on Dead or Alive?

The maximum win for the original Dead or Alive isn’t included in the verified specifications we use, so check the game’s paytable or help screen at your casino. The sequel, Dead or Alive 2, publishes a 111,111x maximum, but that figure belongs to the newer game and shouldn’t be applied to this one. Compare both on our Dead or Alive 2 review.

What is the difference between Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2?

Dead or Alive has a single free spins round with sticky wilds and doubled wins, while Dead or Alive 2 offers a choice of three bonus modes. Both use a 5×3 grid with 9 paylines, high volatility and a 96.82% top RTP. The sequel publishes a 111,111x maximum win. If you like one simple bonus, the original fits; if you want choice, try the sequel. See our NetEnt slots page for more.

How many paylines does Dead or Alive have?

Dead or Alive has 9 paylines on a 5-reel, 3-row grid. Wins are paid when matching symbols land on a line from the leftmost reel. Having so few lines is one reason the game feels volatile, because fewer combinations pay in the base game than on a ways-to-win slot. Our explainer on slot paylines compares lines with ways-to-win systems.

Is Dead or Alive available with autoplay in the UK?

No, autoplay is not available on Dead or Alive or any other online slot for British players. The Gambling Commission banned autoplay on slots from 31 October 2021, along with turbo and slam-stop features, and set a minimum spin time of 2.5 seconds. You need to press spin for each round. See our autoplay ban page for the full rules and dates.
