Wild West slots

Wild West slots are online slots set on the American frontier, with outlaws, sheriffs, saloons, train robberies and high-noon gunfights. They also include some of the most volatile games ever released, with caps up to 500,000× the stake, so this guide compares 15 western titles on RTP, volatility and maximum win, and explains what those numbers mean for your budget.

Key takeaways

  • Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2 have the highest top RTP in our western table at 96.82%.
  • Tombstone Slaughter publishes the highest cap at 500,000×, with Nolimit City’s ‘Insane’ volatility label.
  • Volatility scales differ between studios, so ‘High’ at one studio isn’t the same as ‘High’ at another.
  • Higher ceilings mean more of the return sits in rare wins, so most sessions on these games pay little.

What defines Wild West slots

The western theme borrows from a century of cowboy films: wanted posters, revolvers, sheriff’s badges, saloons, steam trains and dusty main streets. The stories are about outlaws and bounties, which fits a design trend in which bonus rounds are framed as shootouts, jailbreaks or heists. Several western games sit close to the titles in our crime and heist slots guide.

Westerns have become a showcase for high-volatility design. Nolimit City, Relax Gaming and Hacksaw Gaming have all used the frontier for games with extreme caps, while NetEnt’s Dead or Alive shows the theme works just as well on a simple nine-line game. See the rest of the collection in our slot themes hub.

High, extreme and insane: reading western volatility labels

Volatility describes how a game’s return is spread: frequent small wins or rare large ones. Studios publish their own labels, and they are not on one shared scale. Nolimit City uses a ladder that runs past ‘High’ to ‘Extreme’ and ‘Insane’; Relax Gaming describes Money Train 3 as at the top of its own scale; NetEnt simply says ‘High’.

So the labels are useful within one studio’s range but rough across studios. A better cross-check is the max win: Dead or Alive 2 caps at 111,111× and Tombstone Slaughter at 500,000×, and both figures imply that much of the return is held back for very rare outcomes. Our slot volatility guide and high-volatility slots page explain what that means in practice.

On an ‘Insane’ game, losing a whole budget without a significant win is an ordinary outcome, not bad luck. Only play these with money you are fully prepared to lose.

Nolimit City’s frontier towns

Nolimit City, owned by Evolution since a deal announced in June 2022, has built five of the western games in our data. They share dark storylines and extreme maths.

  • Deadwood (2020): a 3-4-4-4-3 reel shape, which gives 3 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 3 = 576 ways, with Extreme volatility and a 13,950× cap.
  • El Paso Gunfight (2021): lets you choose a High or Extreme reel set. Its Drunken Gunfight bonus spins use jumping wilds and sticky xNudge wilds; an xNudge wild moves to fill its reel and adds one to its multiplier for each cell it moves. Our xWays and xNudge page explains the mechanic.
  • Tombstone RIP (January 2022): Insane volatility and a 300,000× cap.
  • Tombstone Slaughter (2025): six reels of 2-3-3-3-3-2 symbols for 2 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 2 = 324 ways, Slaughter Spins bonus rounds with Quickdraw Revolver Wilds and a 500,000× cap.
  • True Grit Redemption: two bonus-spin rounds, Torture Spins and Dead Spins, that open up extra grid positions, plus Reel Split, with a 20,220× cap.

The two Tombstone games have their own Tombstone series page.

The Money Train series: a train robbery in five parts

Relax Gaming’s best-known series puts a train heist on the reels. Following the games in order shows the industry’s rising ceilings more clearly than any other western line.

Money Train 5202696.1%5×4, 40 lines100,000× Ultra / 50,000× Standard

The cap rose 7.5 times from the first game to the fourth while RTP stayed within 0.3 points. Money Train 5 adds a choice: its respin-style bonus spins come in Standard and Ultra modes, with a Super Free Spins upgrade, and the mode changes the ceiling. Our Money Train series page and hold and win explainer cover the respin mechanic.

Showdowns and DuelReels: Hacksaw’s western games

Hacksaw Gaming’s Wanted Dead or a Wild is the studio’s best-known slot: a 5×5 grid with 15 lines, high volatility, a 96.38% RTP and a 12,500× cap. It anchors our Wanted series page.

Hacksaw has since built a mechanic around the duel itself. In DuelReels, a VS symbol that lands as part of a win expands to fill its reel and two characters fight, with the winner’s multiplier applied to that reel. In Bullets and Bounty, a western released in August 2025, Bounty DuelReels let the Bounty Hunter absorb each defeated outlaw’s multiplier over up to three duels, as reported in World Casino Directory’s Bullets and Bounty launch report (opens in a new tab). Our DuelReels page explains the mechanic; we don’t have verified RTP or max win figures for Bullets and Bounty, so check its help screen.

Classic western slots: Dead or Alive, Wild West Gold and Sticky Bandits

Not every western needs a six-figure cap. NetEnt’s Dead or Alive (2009) is a 5×3 game with just nine paylines, high volatility and a top RTP of 96.82%, among the highest in our whole slot database. Its sequel keeps the same RTP and nine lines but publishes a 111,111× cap. Pragmatic Play’s Wild West Gold uses a 5×4 grid with 40 lines at 96.51%, and Quickspin’s Sticky Bandits (2017) is the gentlest option here, rated medium-high on a 5×5 grid with 30 fixed lines and a 96.58% default RTP.

For anyone who likes the theme but not the extreme swings, these three are the place to start. Our list of high-RTP slots shows how Dead or Alive compares with other themes.

What an hour on a Wild West slot costs

Expected cost per hour equals stake × spins per hour × (100% minus RTP). UK rules allow at most one spin every 2.5 seconds, which is 1,440 spins an hour at full pace. Here is Tombstone Slaughter (96.01%, so a 3.99% edge) at 10p:

Tombstone Slaughter at 10p: expected cost by pace
Spins per hourStakedExpected loss
300£30about £1.20
600£60about £2.39
1,440 (maximum UK pace)£144about £5.75

The expected figure is small, but on an Insane-volatility game the actual result of an hour is spread very widely around it, and losing the whole amount staked is common. The figures also assume the top RTP version. Our page on theoretical loss shows the formula with other games.

How to play Wild West slots online responsibly

  1. Decide your budget and set it as a deposit limit before you play.
  2. Match the game to your appetite for risk: Sticky Bandits or Wild West Gold for gentler play, Tombstone or Money Train for extreme swings.
  3. Read the help screen for the RTP version, the volatility label and any reel-set or mode options such as El Paso Gunfight’s Extreme set.
  4. Use a small stake on high-cap games so a dry spell doesn’t end the session in minutes.
  5. Start each spin yourself; there is no autoplay on UK slots.
  6. Stop at your limit and don’t raise stakes to win back losses.

UK rules for Wild West slots, and the myths to ignore

Every slot here is limited to £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18–24, as the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) explains. Spins take at least 2.5 seconds, autoplay and turbo are banned, and your net position must be on screen. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so bonus rounds come only through play. See UK slot stake limits and the feature buy rules.

  • Myth: extreme games are ‘due’ a big hit after a long drought. Spins are independent; see can a slot be due a win.
  • Myth: a higher cap means a better chance of winning. It means a different spread, usually with leaner typical sessions.
  • Myth: choosing the Extreme reel set improves the return. Any change to RTP is published in the rules; volatility and RTP are different things.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best Wild West slots in the UK?

For RTP, NetEnt’s Dead or Alive and Dead or Alive 2 lead at 96.82%. For gentler play, Sticky Bandits is rated medium-high. For the biggest ceilings, Nolimit City’s Tombstone Slaughter (500,000×) and Relax Gaming’s Money Train 4 (150,000×) stand out, though both carry extreme swings. Compare them on our Dead or Alive 2 page and the slot themes hub.

Which western slot has the biggest max win?

Tombstone Slaughter: El Gordo’s Revenge from Nolimit City has the highest published cap in our data at 500,000× the stake, or £50,000 at 10p. Tombstone RIP follows at 300,000×. Both are rated ‘Insane’ volatility, so the typical session pays far less, and many end with nothing. Check the casino’s terms for any payout limits too. See our Tombstone Slaughter page.

What does Insane volatility mean?

It is the top of Nolimit City’s own volatility scale, above High and Extreme. It means the game’s return is concentrated in very rare, very large wins, so long runs without significant wins are normal. It doesn’t change the RTP, which is about 96% on the Tombstone games. Labels aren’t comparable across studios. Our volatility explainer covers the maths.

Is Dead or Alive 2 better than Dead or Alive?

Both publish a top RTP of 96.82% and use nine paylines on a 5×3 grid with high volatility. The sequel publishes a 111,111× cap, which suggests bigger swings, while our data has no verified cap for the original. Dead or Alive also exists in lower RTP versions, so check the help screen. Compare them on the Dead or Alive page.

How many Money Train games are there?

There are five in our data, from Money Train (2019) to Money Train 5 (2026), all by Relax Gaming. The cap rose from 20,000× in the first game to 150,000× in Money Train 4, while RTP stayed between 96.1% and 96.40%. Money Train 5 offers Standard and Ultra modes with caps of 50,000× and 100,000×. See our Money Train series page.

What are DuelReels?

DuelReels is a Hacksaw Gaming mechanic in which a VS symbol landing as part of a win expands to fill its reel and two characters duel, with the winner’s multiplier applied to that reel. The western Bullets and Bounty (August 2025) adds Bounty DuelReels, where the Bounty Hunter absorbs defeated outlaws’ multipliers over up to three duels. Multiplier ranges differ by game. Read our DuelReels page.

Can I buy bonus rounds on western slots in the UK?

No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the bonus rounds in games like Tombstone RIP or Money Train 4 are reached only through normal play. The Commission was concerned that buy-ins let people stake large sums very quickly. Our feature buy rules page and our answer on buying bonus rounds cover the detail.

Are Wild West slots suitable for small budgets?

Some are more suitable than others. Extreme and Insane games can use up a small budget quickly with nothing to show for it. If you like the theme, Sticky Bandits (medium-high) or Wild West Gold at a low stake are gentler choices, and a smaller stake stretches any budget further. Our guide to low-stakes play has practical budgeting tips.
