Sticky wilds explained

Sticky wilds are wild symbols that stay locked in place for later spins instead of clearing after one result, usually for the rest of a bonus round or a set of respins. Each one keeps helping on every spin it survives, so they build up. This guide explains the counting behind that build-up, the games we cover that use sticky wilds, and what the RTP means for your stake.

Key takeaways

  • A sticky wild stays where it landed for further spins, most often until a bonus round or respin sequence ends.
  • The earlier a sticky wild lands in a round, the more spins it takes part in, which is why early wilds matter most.
  • Sticky wilds appear in games such as El Paso Gunfight, Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded and Stormforged.
  • Sticky features are part of the published RTP; a 94% game costs well over half as much again as a 96.41% one.

What sticky wilds mean

A wild symbol substitutes for other symbols to help make wins; the basic definition in the casinos.com features guide (opens in a new tab) is that it replaces everything except scatters. The sticky version does that and then stays put. When the next spin starts, the other reels spin as normal but the sticky wild remains locked in its cell, ready to join any win that forms around it.

How long a wild sticks is set by each game. The common patterns are for the rest of a free spins round triggered in play, for a short run of respins, or until a win lands. Our slot features hub lists every mechanic we cover if you want to compare sticky wilds with other modifiers.

Sticky wilds maths: counting wild-spins

The easiest way to see why sticky wilds matter is to count wild-spins: how many spins each wild takes part in. In a round of 10 bonus spins, an ordinary wild that lands on spin 2 helps on one spin only. A sticky wild that lands on spin 2 stays for spins 2 to 10, so it helps on nine.

Spin 1110
Spin 219
Spin 516
Spin 813
Spin 1011

Now combine them. If wilds land on spins 2, 5 and 8, ordinary wilds give 3 wild-spins in total. Sticky wilds give 9 + 6 + 3 = 18. The same three landings do six times as much work. That is why the start of a sticky-wild round tends to decide how it goes: early wilds have longest to contribute, and wilds that arrive at the end barely matter.

Coverage grows too. On a 5-reel, 4-row grid there are 20 cells. With three sticky wilds held, 15% of the grid is already wild on every remaining spin; with six, 30%. Every win route through those cells has a substitute ready, so later spins in a good round pay more often than earlier ones.

This is counting, not a forecast. How often wilds land in a given game is not published, and the round's RTP already reflects it.

How a sticky wild round plays out

  1. You trigger the bonus round or respin feature the game uses.
  2. When a wild lands, it locks in its cell and stays for the spins that follow.
  3. Remaining reels spin around the locked wilds each time.
  4. Wins are counted every spin with all locked wilds included.
  5. When the round ends, the sticky wilds clear and normal play resumes.

Some games add movement. El Paso Gunfight's Drunken Gunfight round mixes jumping wilds, which move around, with sticky xNudge wilds that stay put. An xNudge wild, according to coverage of Apocalypse Riders X, nudges to fill the whole reel and adds one to its multiplier (opens in a new tab) for each cell it moves, so a sticky xNudge holds a full reel and its multiplier for the rest of the round. Our xWays and xNudge guide covers that mechanic in depth.

Sticky wilds, sticky symbols and sticky multipliers

Sticky is a broad label. Wilds are only one thing a game can lock. This table separates them, using games from our checked data.

What different games make sticky
What sticksExampleAs described
Wilds (with multipliers)El Paso GunfightSticky xNudge wilds alongside jumping wilds in free spins
Wilds (from transformed characters)Vikings Go Berzerk ReloadedBerzerk Vikings turn into sticky wilds in free spins

MultipliersExtra Juicy MegawaysSemi-sticky multipliers that add together across tumbles

The distinction matters for value. A sticky wild helps every symbol; a sticky theme symbol only helps wins of that symbol; a sticky multiplier boosts whatever wins land on its spot. If you prefer multipliers that build, our multipliers guide is the next stop.

Sticky wilds slots: RTP, volatility and max win

Key figures for sticky-wild slots we review

StormforgedHacksaw Gaming96.41% (lower versions exist)HighCheck the help screen
Reindeer RoyaleELK Studios94%High25,000x stake

All four are high-volatility designs or carry big caps, which fits the mechanic: a round where many wilds lock early can pay far more than one where they arrive late or not at all. El Paso Gunfight lets you choose between a High and an Extreme reel set, according to our checked data, so the same game can be played with two levels of swing. More from the studios behind these games is on our Nolimit City and Yggdrasil pages.

Sticky wilds RTP: what it costs to play

Sticky wilds can make a bonus round feel generous, but the cost of play comes from the RTP. Compare Reindeer Royale at 94% with Stormforged at 96.41% for the same £20 budget staked once.

Average cost of £20 staked at two RTPs
Stake per spinSpinsReindeer Royale (94%, edge 6%)Stormforged (96.41%, edge 3.59%)
10p200£1.2072p
50p40£1.2072p
£120£1.2072p

The 94% game costs about 67% more on average for the same play. In practice, because both are high volatility, a single £20 session will usually end well away from either figure, often lower and occasionally much higher. Smaller stakes give more spins and so more chances to reach the bonus round where sticky wilds live. Our page on how long £20 will last on a slot has more examples, and the volatility guide explains the ratings.

Sticky wild myths to ignore

  • A sticky wild makes the next spin more likely to land another one. Wilds that are already locked don't change the chance of new ones landing; each spin's result is independent.
  • You should raise your stake to reach the next round sooner. A bigger stake never improves the odds of triggering a feature; it only raises what each spin costs. Chasing a round with larger bets is a quick way to overspend.
  • Sticky wilds raise the RTP. The published return already includes them.
  • All sticky features are wilds. As the table above shows, games also lock symbols and multipliers.

Our gambler's fallacy page explains why streaks and near misses don't change what comes next.

UK rules for sticky wilds slots

Sticky-wild slots follow the standard UK slot rules. The Commission's RTS 14 product design standard (opens in a new tab) requires at least 2.5 seconds per slot spin and bans turbo and slam-stop, though its guidance says the no-speeding-up rule doesn't apply to bonus or feature games where no extra stake is wagered. Autoplay has been banned on slots since 31 October 2021, so you start each paid spin yourself; our autoplay ban page explains why.

Stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24; see our slot stake limits page. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so you can't pay to go straight to a sticky-wild bonus round.

How to check sticky wild rules in a game

  1. Open the paytable and find where sticky wilds appear: base game, bonus round or respins.
  2. Check how long they stay: one respin, the whole round, or until a win.
  3. See whether they carry multipliers, and whether those multipliers add up.
  4. Check whether the round can be extended while wilds are locked.
  5. Read the RTP and volatility, then choose a stake that fits your budget.

Frequently asked questions

What are sticky wilds?

Sticky wilds are wild symbols that stay locked in their cells for later spins instead of clearing after one result. They usually appear in bonus rounds or respins and stay until that sequence ends, helping on every spin they survive. Like ordinary wilds, they generally don't substitute for scatters. Our wild symbols guide explains the basics of how wilds substitute.

How long do sticky wilds stay?

It depends on the game. Common patterns are for the rest of a bonus round, for a short run of respins, or until a win lands. The paytable states the rule, and it makes a big difference: a wild that sticks for a whole 10-spin round can take part in up to ten spins. Our respins guide covers features that hold symbols while others spin.

Which slots have sticky wilds?

On our site, El Paso Gunfight (sticky xNudge wilds in free spins), Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded (Berzerk Vikings that turn into sticky wilds) and Stormforged (free spins with sticky wilds) all use them. Reindeer Royale has sticky reindeer symbols, which are a close relative. Compare their figures in our high volatility slots guide, where most of these games sit.

Are sticky wilds better than expanding wilds?

Neither is better in value terms, because both sit inside the published RTP. A sticky wild helps over several spins; an expanding wild helps on every row of one reel for a single spin. Some games combine them, such as sticky xNudge wilds that fill their reel and stay. Our expanding wilds guide runs the line and ways arithmetic for comparison.

Do sticky wilds increase RTP?

No. The published RTP is calculated across every possible outcome, including bonus rounds full of sticky wilds and rounds where none lock. Stormforged at 96.41% costs about 3.59p for each £1 staked over the long run, and Reindeer Royale at 94% about 6p. Our RTP explainer shows how to turn any RTP into an expected cost.

What is a sticky xNudge wild?

It is a Nolimit City wild that nudges to fill its whole reel, gaining one step of multiplier for each cell it moves, and then stays in place for the rest of the round. El Paso Gunfight's Drunken Gunfight spins use them alongside jumping wilds. In Mental II, xNudge multipliers in one win combine into a total. Our Nolimit City page covers the studio's other mechanics.

Can I buy a sticky wilds bonus in the UK?

No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so you can only reach sticky-wild rounds through normal play. Versions of these games sold elsewhere may show buy options, but they don't apply here. Our page on buying bonus rounds on UK slots explains what changed.

Should I play sticky wild slots at a higher stake?

No. Stake size scales wins and losses equally, and the average cost per pound staked is set by the RTP. Most sticky-wild games are high volatility, so a lower stake gives your budget more spins and more chances to reach the bonus round. Never raise stakes to chase a feature. Our deposit limits guide explains how to cap spending before you start.
