Hellcatraz slot explained: Relax Gaming's 6 × 6 jailbreak

Hellcatraz is a prison-themed slot from Relax Gaming, the studio founded in 2010 that began in Tallinn and is now based in Malta, best known for its Money Train series. The game sets a jailbreak story on a large six-by-six grid and pays across 46,656 ways using cascading reels.

What makes it unusual is the way its mystery symbols work. Rather than revealing at once, each one shows a countdown that falls as cascades happen, so a long chain of wins can open up several hidden symbols in a row. A separate key collection gives the game a longer-term target: reach 2,000 keys and Super Free Spins begin.

How the features work in Hellcatraz

The grid fills with ordinary symbols and with mystery symbols. A mystery symbol does not show what it is straight away. Instead, it displays a countdown number. Each time a cascade happens, the countdown on every mystery symbol drops. When a counter reaches the end, the symbol reveals itself, possibly completing new wins.

Cascades are what make this work. When a win lands, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols drop in to fill the gaps. If those form another win, another cascade follows, and every mystery symbol's countdown falls again. A spin with a long chain of cascades can therefore reveal mystery symbols that would sit hidden on a spin with only one win.

Running alongside the base game is a key collection. Key symbols that land are added to a running total, and the target is 2,000 keys. Reaching it starts Super Free Spins, a bonus round in which mystery symbols reveal straight away instead of waiting for their countdowns. Removing that wait is what gives the round its extra punch.
