Main featureFire Reels plus three free-spin modes

The 108 ways are simple arithmetic: 3 × 2 × 3 × 2 × 3 = 108. Because wins count from both the left and the right, a combination can form from either end of the grid. Our guide to ways-to-win slots explains the counting method.

How the features work in Mental 2

Mental 2 splits its features between the base game and a three-level bonus. In ordinary paid spins the standout is Fire Reels. The bonus itself is a ladder of three free-spin modes: Bloodletting, Surgery and ExperiMENTAL.

Fire Reels in the base game

When a reel catches fire, the symbols landing on it split into more than one. More symbols on the screen means more combinations across the reels, so a burning reel can lift the number of ways on that spin well above the standard 108. Our Fire Frames section further down gives the full breakdown.

Three modes, one after another

The bonus isn't a choice of three rounds. As the free spins table later on this page shows, the modes form a ladder:

  1. Bloodletting Spins is the entry mode, reached through ordinary play.
  2. Surgery Spins is the middle level, reached from inside Bloodletting.
  3. ExperiMENTAL Spins is the top level and the hardest to reach.

The upper modes are harder to reach, which is how high-volatility games tend to hold back part of their return. A session can include bonuses that never get past Bloodletting, and a higher mode can still pay modestly. The table also lists the scatter conditions and what changes at each level.

Since feature buys aren't offered to British players, all three modes come only from normal spins in the UK.

Mental 2 against the original Mental

The sequel keeps the same reel shape and base ways count, and lifts the ceiling by half.

Fire Frames, Fire Reels and Enhancer Cells in Mental 2

According to the launch showcase, between 1 and 13 reel positions in the main game can become Fire Frames, and a symbol landing in a Fire Frame splits into two. Between 1 and 5 whole reels can become Fire Reels, where a landing symbol splits into three. Splitting adds symbols to the grid, which raises the number of ways on that spin. Our split symbols page explains why.

Enhancer Cells sit at the bottom of reels 2, 3 and 4 and are switched on by Fire Frames:

Mental 2 Enhancer Cells
Fire Frames landedEnhancer Cells activated
4Reel 2
6Reels 2 and 4
8Reels 2, 3 and 4

Each active cell reveals a wild, an xSplit, an xNudge wild, one of five Patient symbols or an xWays symbol.

xWays, xSplit, xNudge and xHole in the Mental 2 slot

Nolimit City's xWays and xNudge family of mechanics does much of the work. The showcase describes them in this game as follows:

  • xWays reveals three symbols of the same kind and makes the reel taller; several xWays on one spin all reveal the same symbol.
  • xSplit splits one symbol on the other reels, doubling its count, and turns itself into two wilds.
  • xNudge wilds nudge until fully visible, adding 1 to their multiplier for each step; multipliers from several such wilds are added together.
  • xHole triggers when it lands in a Fire Frame or Fire Reel in the second position of reel 3, pulls in paying symbols and wilds and scatters them to random positions with a 2x, 4x or 8x multiplier, then becomes a wild.
  • xMental, landing in a Fire Frame or Fire Reel, gives an extra spin in which every position has a Fire Frame.

Dead Patient symbols activate when two or more land, and one Patient symbol then reveals a random multiplier from a set running 5x, 10x, 15x, 30x, 50x, 100x, 200x, 500x, 1,000x or 9,999x. The showcase doesn't publish how often each value appears, so no probability can be given.

Mental 2 free spins: Bloodletting, Surgery and ExperiMENTAL

The bonus runs as a ladder of three free spins modes, each reached from the one below.

Mental 2 free-spin modes (launch showcase)
ModeHow you reach itWhat changes
Bloodletting Spins3 Cognitive Scatters on reels 1, 3 and 58 spins; Fire Frames and Fire Reels stay sticky
Surgery Spins1 Disembodied Scatter during Bloodletting+1 spin; Disembodied symbol sticky, Mental Transform every spin, Dead multipliers collected
ExperiMENTAL Spins2 Disembodied Scatters during Bloodletting, or 1 more during SurgeryExtra spins; both Disembodied symbols sticky and Dead multiplier counts keep building

Each step up needs extra scatters to land during the round, so the upper modes are naturally harder to reach, and much of the game's volatility sits in them. Reaching Surgery or ExperiMENTAL doesn't promise a large win; it changes the range of what is possible.

Mental 2 RTP and what high volatility means

At the top setting, the house edge is 3.94%, or £3.94 per £100 staked on average. Lower RTP versions exist, so check the rules screen. The volatility label matters as much as the RTP here: with a 99,999x ceiling and multipliers up to 9,999x, a large part of the return sits in very rare results, so most sessions end below the average. Our high-volatility slots page compares similar games.

What £20 means on Mental 2

StakeSpins from £20Average cost per spinAverage cost of staking £20Max win at this stake

50p401.97p79p£49,999.50
£1203.94p79p£99,999

The right-hand column grabs attention, but the middle columns describe what usually happens. In a game this volatile, twenty £1 spins can easily pass without Fire Frames doing anything memorable, let alone Bloodletting Spins. Lower stakes give the features more chances for the same average cost. See how long £20 lasts on a slot for more.

The 99,999x Mental 2 max win

According to the showcase, the max win of 99,999 times the base bet is triggered by landing an xGod symbol on each reel. At the UK caps that is £199,998 at £2 and £499,995 at £5. It's 33,333x higher than the original's 66,666x. The help screen explains exactly how the cap ends a round. Our explainer on max win caps covers the general rules.

Playing Mental 2 online in the UK

UK online slot stakes are capped at £5 per spin from age 25 and £2 for ages 18 to 24, under the Gambling Commission's online slot stake limits. The Commission's RTS 14 responsible design standard (opens in a new tab) requires a minimum 2.5 seconds per spin and bans turbo, slam-stop and celebrating returns at or below the stake; autoplay is banned too.

Some Nolimit City games elsewhere offer paid routes into features. On UK sites, since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so Bloodletting Spins come only from Cognitive Scatters in normal play. If launch material mentions optional bet modes, check the UK help screen to see what's actually available.

How to play Mental 2

  1. Register at a UK-licensed casino and complete age and identity verification.
  2. Choose a deposit limit when prompted, before money goes in.
  3. Open Mental 2 and read the rules, checking the RTP version and the Fire Frame and scatter rules.
  4. Choose a stake within your age-based cap; small stakes stretch a budget.
  5. Spin one press at a time and let features resolve.
  6. Stop at your planned limit and take a break if you feel the urge to chase a bonus.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Mental 2?

The top RTP of Mental 2 is 96.06%, an average cost of £3.94 for every £100 staked over the long run. Lower versions exist and casinos choose which to run, so check the rules screen before you play. With such a volatile game, single sessions vary hugely from the average. Our RTP guide explains what the figure does and doesn't tell you.

What is the max win on Mental 2?

The max win on Mental 2 is 99,999 times the stake, reached by landing an xGod symbol on each reel, according to the studio's launch material. That's £9,999.90 at 10p and £499,995 at the £5 UK limit for over-25s. It is an extremely rare outcome. Our page what is the highest paying slot? puts it alongside other big ceilings.

How do you trigger free spins on Mental 2?

Three Cognitive Scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 trigger 8 Bloodletting Spins, according to the launch showcase. Disembodied Scatters landing during the round can upgrade it to Surgery Spins or ExperiMENTAL Spins and add spins. The help screen is the final word on exact rules. Our slot bonus rounds guide explains how bonuses fit into RTP.

Is Mental 2 better than Mental?

Neither is cheaper to any meaningful degree: Mental's top RTP is 96.08% and Mental 2's is 96.06%, just 2p apart per £100. Mental 2 adds both-direction pays, Fire Reels and a three-stage bonus, and raises the max win from 66,666x to 99,999x. Our data lists Mental as extreme volatility and Mental 2 as high. Read our Mental review to compare.

What are Fire Frames in Mental 2?

Fire Frames are reel positions where a landing symbol splits into two. Between 1 and 13 positions can become Fire Frames in the main game, and landing 4, 6 or 8 of them activates Enhancer Cells on reels 2, 3 and 4. Fire Reels work similarly across a whole reel but split symbols into three. Our split symbols page explains why splitting adds ways.

How many ways to win does Mental 2 have?

There are 108 ways to win, from a 3-2-3-2-3 reel layout, because 3 × 2 × 3 × 2 × 3 equals 108. Wins pay in both directions, so combinations can start from the leftmost or rightmost reel. Split symbols and xWays can add more positions on a given spin. Our page on ways-to-win slots covers the maths.

Is Mental 2 too volatile for small budgets?

It is a very volatile game, so small budgets can run out without a bonus, especially at higher stakes. Twenty £1 spins is a short session; 200 spins at 10p gives the features more chances for the same average cost of about 79p per £20 staked. If you want gentler swings, look elsewhere. Our low-volatility slots page lists calmer games.

Can you buy the bonus on Mental 2 in the UK?

No, there's no bonus buy on UK versions. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, because the Commission said they risked breaching its standards on game rules and chasing losses. The free spins come only from scatters in normal play. Our feature buy UK rules page has the full background.
