Megaways vs cluster pays slots
Megaways vs cluster pays is a difference in how a win is counted. Megaways slots pay matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, with the number of ways changing every spin (up to 117,649 on the classic layout), while cluster pays slots pay for groups of touching symbols anywhere on a grid. Neither format sets the RTP: each game does.
Key takeaways
- Megaways: symbols must land on consecutive reels from the left; the ways count is the product of symbols on each reel.
- Cluster pays: a group of touching symbols pays, usually five or more, with no reels or lines to follow.
- Both formats usually remove winning symbols and drop new ones in, so one spin can pay several times.
- RTPs in both families sit mostly around 96% to 96.8%; volatility is usually high in both.
- The format changes the rhythm of play, not the house edge, so choose by feel and check each game's help screen.
- Classic Megaways layout
- 6 reels, 2–7 symbols each
- Megaways range (classic)
- 64 to 117,649 ways
- Megaways creator
- Big Time Gaming
- Typical cluster grid
- 7x7 or 8x8
- Usual minimum cluster
- 5 symbols (varies by game)
- UK slot stake limit
- £5 a spin (£2 aged 18–24)
Megaways vs cluster pays: the core difference
Every slot needs a rule for deciding which symbols count as a win. Old games used fixed paylines; later came ways to win, which pay any matching symbols on neighbouring reels. Megaways is a ways system whose reel heights change on every spin. Cluster pays throws out reels as a counting tool altogether and looks for clumps of identical symbols.
| Question | Megaways | Cluster pays |
|---|---|---|
| What pays? | Matching symbols on consecutive reels, starting from the leftmost | A group of identical symbols touching each other |
| Does position matter? | Yes: reel 1 must be part of the win | Only that symbols connect; the group can sit anywhere |
| Typical grid | 6 reels, 2–7 symbols per reel, often plus a top reel | Square grid such as 7x7 or 8x8 |
| What changes each spin? | The number of symbols on each reel, so the number of ways | Nothing in the grid shape (in most games) |
| Minimum win | Usually three of a kind from reel 1 | Set per game: 5+ is common, but 3+, 4+ and 9+ exist |
| Usual partner feature | Cascading reels | Cascading reels |
The online guide at casinos.com's slot features page (opens in a new tab) describes cluster pays in the same terms: a group of identical symbols clustered together on the grid pays instead of a line. Our feature pages on Megaways and cluster pays cover each system on its own.
How Megaways ways are counted, with worked examples
A Megaways spin multiplies together the number of symbols showing on each reel. On the classic six-reel layout, each reel shows between two and seven symbols, so the count runs from 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 64 ways up to 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = 117,649 ways.
| Symbols on reels 1–6 | Calculation | Ways this spin |
|---|---|---|
| 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2 | 2 to the power 6 | 64 |
| 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6 | 3 x 5 x 7 x 2 x 4 x 6 | 5,040 |
| 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, 6 | 6 to the power 6 | 46,656 |
| 7, 7, 7, 7, 7, 7 | 7 to the power 6 | 117,649 |
Not every Megaways slot reaches 117,649. Games with fewer symbols per reel have lower caps: Primal Megaways (2 to 6 symbols) tops out at 46,656, and Eye of Horus Megaways (2 to 5) at 15,625. In Bonanza Megaways, the 2016 game that made the format famous, a horizontal reel above reels two to five adds one more symbol to each of those reels.
More ways doesn't mean better odds. A spin showing 117,649 ways often has more low-paying symbols on screen, and the game's maths is set so that the RTP is the same whatever the ways count on a given spin.
How cluster pays wins are counted
In a cluster pays slot, the game looks for groups of the same symbol that touch. In Nolimit City's The Border, for example, symbols must touch vertically or horizontally, and five or more are needed to pay, as its launch report (opens in a new tab) explains. Diagonal contact and minimum sizes differ by game, so read the rules.
Bigger clusters pay more, and the paytable usually lists prizes by cluster size (5, 6, 7 and so on up to a top band). Grid size changes the feel: a 7x7 grid has 49 positions and an 8x8 grid has 64, so larger clusters are more achievable on the bigger board, though symbol weightings decide how often.
| Slot | Grid | Minimum cluster | RTP | Volatility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sugar Rush | 7x7 | 5 | 96.50% | High |
| Reactoonz | 7x7 | 5 | 96.51% | High |
| Jammin' Jars | 8x8 | 5 | 96.83% | High |
| Gemix | 7x7 | 5 | 96.83% (lower versions exist) | Medium |
| Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness | 5x5 | 4 | 96.59% (top version) | High |
| Aloha! Cluster Pays | 6x5 | 9 | 96.42% (top version) | Check help screen |
| TNT Tumble | 5x4 expanding to 5x7 | 3 | 96.11% | Medium-high |
Cascading reels in Megaways and cluster pays slots
Most games in both families use cascading reels: winning symbols vanish, the rest drop down, and new symbols fall in from above. One paid stake can then produce a chain of wins. Developers brand this differently, and many add a multiplier that climbs with each cascade in a chain.
Cascades matter more to cluster pays. Because a cluster grid doesn't change shape, the chain of refills is where most of the action happens, and features such as Sugar Rush Xmas's persistent multiplier spots build on it. In Megaways games, cascades also reshuffle the reel heights, so the ways count can change mid-chain.
Megaways slots: RTP, volatility and max win
| Slot | Developer | RTP | Volatility | Max ways | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bonanza Megaways | Big Time Gaming | 96.00% | High | 117,649 | Check help screen |
| Extra Chilli Megaways | Big Time Gaming | Up to 96.41% (GB version) | High | 117,649 | 20,000x |
| White Rabbit Megaways | Big Time Gaming | 97.24% | Medium-high | 248,832 | 17,420x |
| The Dog House Megaways | Pragmatic Play | 96.55% | Very high | 117,649 | 12,305x |
| Gonzo's Quest Megaways | Red Tiger | 95.77% (default) | Medium-high | 117,649 | 21,000x |
| Rainbow Riches Megaways | Barcrest | 96% | High | 117,649 | 12,500x |
| Fishin' Frenzy Megaways | Blueprint Gaming | 96.10% | High | 15,625 | 10,000x |
Big Time Gaming created Megaways and has licensed it widely; Blueprint Gaming's licence was announced on 1 May 2018, as CasinoBeats reported (opens in a new tab). That's why the same mechanic appears across so many studios. See our Big Time Gaming page for the original catalogue.
Megaways vs cluster pays RTP and volatility compared
Put the two tables together and the overlap is plain. The Megaways games above run from 95.77% to 97.24%; the cluster games from 96.11% to 96.83%. Most titles in both families are rated high volatility, with a few medium options on each side (Gemix among cluster games, White Rabbit Megaways at medium-high).
In pounds, a 96.5% RTP means an average cost of £3.50 for every £100 staked, whichever format pays it. The format changes how the losses and wins arrive. Megaways spins swing between narrow, low-ways screens and wide ones; cluster grids tend to deliver lots of small cluster wins punctuated by long cascade chains. Over a short session either can finish far from the average.
| Megaways (96.55%) | Cluster pays (96.50%) | |
|---|---|---|
| Spins if nothing comes back | 100 | 100 |
| Total staked over 100 spins | £20 | £20 |
| Average return | £19.31 | £19.30 |
| Average cost | 69p | 70p |
| Example game | The Dog House Megaways | Sugar Rush |
Our guides to volatility and RTP explain why two games with the same average can feel so different.
Common myths about Megaways and cluster pays
- Myth: 117,649 ways means more chances to win money. The ways count is part of how the game is drawn, and the RTP is fixed in its maths. More ways usually means more low symbols on screen.
- Myth: a grid that's been quiet is due a big cluster. Each spin is independent; the game has no memory of recent results.
- Myth: cluster games are lower risk because they pay often. Many small wins can still sit inside a high-volatility game; check the rating in the help screen.
- Myth: cascades are a free extra. They're how the stated RTP is paid out, not an addition to it.

UK rules for Megaways and cluster pays slots
Both formats are online slots under British rules, so the same limits apply. Stakes are capped at £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, as set out in the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). A full cascade chain is part of one game cycle.
Since 31 October 2021, UK slots have no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, and at least 2.5 seconds per spin, and they can't celebrate a return that's no more than your stake. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, which is why some games run a different RTP here; Extra Chilli Megaways, for example, quotes up to 96.41% without its Feature Drop. Our game design rules page explains each rule.
How to choose between a Megaways and a cluster pays slot
- Decide how you like a session to feel: swingy reels (Megaways) or a busy grid of small connections (cluster pays).
- Open the help screen and confirm the RTP version your casino runs.
- Check the volatility rating and the max win; a larger cap usually means harsher ordinary play.
- For cluster games, note the minimum cluster size and whether diagonals count.
- Pick a stake that gives you at least 100 spins from your budget, within the UK stake limit.
- Set a loss limit and a time reminder before you start, and stop when either is reached.
Verdict: Megaways or cluster pays for each type of player
| If you… | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Like classic reels with extra variety | Megaways | Familiar reel layout, but every spin looks different |
| Prefer a calm, puzzle-like grid | A medium-volatility cluster game such as Gemix | Lots of small connections and fewer extreme swings |
| Want the highest listed RTP in these tables | White Rabbit Megaways or Jammin' Jars | 97.24% and 96.83% respectively |
| Want the largest caps | Megaways | Several titles list 17,000x to 21,000x |
| Find long cascade chains fun to watch | Cluster pays | The grid stays fixed and refills drive the action |
Neither format beats the other on value. Choose the one you enjoy, check the game's RTP and volatility, and keep stakes small enough that a losing run doesn't matter. Our Megaways vs classic slots comparison helps if you're weighing reels against older formats too.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Megaways and cluster pays?
Megaways pays matching symbols on adjacent reels from the left, while cluster pays pays groups of touching symbols anywhere on a grid. On a classic Megaways layout each of six reels shows two to seven symbols, so the ways count changes every spin, from 64 up to 117,649. A cluster game keeps a fixed grid, such as 7x7, and usually needs five or more connected symbols. See our Megaways and cluster pays feature guides.
Do Megaways slots pay better than cluster pays slots?
No, the format doesn't decide the payback; each game's RTP does. In our data, well-known Megaways slots run from about 95.8% to 97.2%, and well-known cluster games from about 96.1% to 96.8%. A 96.5% game costs about £3.50 per £100 staked on average in either format. Check the version your casino runs in the help screen, and read our RTP guide and house edge explainer.
How many ways does a Megaways slot have?
It depends on the spin and the game; the classic layout ranges from 64 to 117,649 ways. Multiply the number of symbols on each reel: six reels of seven symbols gives 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 = 117,649. Games with fewer rows cap lower, such as 46,656 (six symbols per reel) or 15,625 (five), and some expand further in features, like White Rabbit Megaways at up to 248,832. Our ways to win page explains the arithmetic.
How many symbols do you need for a cluster win?
Usually five or more touching symbols, but it varies by game. Sugar Rush, Reactoonz and Jammin' Jars need five; Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness needs four; TNT Tumble needs three; and Aloha! Cluster Pays needs nine. Some games count only horizontal and vertical contact. The paytable lists prizes by cluster size, so read it before you play. Our cluster pays guide and Sugar Rush review show worked examples.
Are Megaways or cluster pays slots more volatile?
Both families are mostly high volatility, so neither is reliably calmer. In our data, almost every major Megaways title and most cluster games are rated high, with a few medium options such as Gemix. Volatility is set by each game's maths, not by how it counts wins. If you want a budget to last, look for a lower volatility rating and a smaller stake. Our volatility guide and high vs low volatility comparison help.
Who invented Megaways and cluster pays?
Big Time Gaming created Megaways, and its Bonanza (December 2016) made the format famous; the studio then licensed it to others, including Blueprint Gaming from 1 May 2018. The origin of cluster pays isn't clearly documented in the sources we checked, so we don't name a first game. Nolimit City described The Border, from September 2022, as its own first cluster game. See our Big Time Gaming page and the history of slot machines overview.
Can you buy the bonus on Megaways slots in the UK?
No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, whatever the mechanic. Some games quote a different RTP for the UK version as a result: Extra Chilli Megaways lists up to 96.41% without its Feature Drop. The Commission said bonus buys risked breaching its standards on game rules and chasing losses. Read our feature buy rules and buy feature explainer.
Is a cascade chain one spin under UK stake limits?
Yes, a cascade chain sits inside one game cycle, which runs from the start of a game until the stake is lost or all winnings are made available. The £5 limit (or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds) applies to the stake for that cycle, so refills and chain multipliers don't count as new bets. The Gambling Commission's guidance defines the game cycle this way. See slot stake limits and our game cycle definition.
