American wheel: meaning in roulette
An American wheel is a roulette wheel with 38 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero and a double zero (00). The extra green pocket raises the house edge to 5.26% on almost every bet, nearly double the 2.70% of a single-zero European wheel, while the payouts stay exactly the same.
Key takeaways
- An American wheel has 38 pockets: 1 to 36, 0 and 00.
- Most bets carry a 5.26% house edge; the five-number top line bet carries 7.89%.
- Payouts match single-zero roulette, so the extra pocket is pure cost to the player.
- £10 a spin for 100 spins costs about £52.60 on average, against £27 on a single-zero wheel.

What an American wheel is
The American wheel, also called the double-zero wheel, is the roulette wheel used in American roulette. Wizard of Odds' roulette basics (opens in a new tab) describe it as having 38 slots: the numbers 1 to 36, a zero and a double zero. The European wheel has 37 pockets with one zero. Every bet is paid as if the wheel had 36 numbers, so each extra green pocket widens the gap between true odds and payout.
This glossary entry explains how the American wheel is laid out, what the double zero costs you in percentages and pounds, and where you are likely to meet one in the UK.
American wheel layout and number order
Going clockwise, the numbers on a double-zero wheel run 0-28-9-26-30-11-7-20-32-17-5-22-34-15-3-24-36-13-1-00-27-10-25-29-12-8-19-31-18-6-21-33-16-4-23-35-14-2. Red and black alternate round the wheel, and 0 and 00 sit directly opposite each other. Low odd numbers (1 to 17) are grouped on one side and high odd numbers (19 to 35) on the other, and most pairs of numbers with one pocket between them add up to 37 or 39.
The table layout is the familiar grid of 1 to 36 in three columns, with a 00 box added beside the 0 at the top. That extra box is what makes the five-number top line bet possible.
American wheel odds and payouts
The payouts below are identical on single- and double-zero wheels. Only the chance of winning changes, which is why the edge rises.
| Bet | Pays | Chance (00 wheel) | Chance (0 wheel) | Edge (00 wheel) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up (1 number) | 35 to 1 | 1/38 (2.63%) | 1/37 (2.70%) | 5.26% |
| Split (2) | 17 to 1 | 2/38 (5.26%) | 2/37 (5.41%) | 5.26% |
| Street (3) | 11 to 1 | 3/38 (7.89%) | 3/37 (8.11%) | 5.26% |
| Corner (4) | 8 to 1 | 4/38 (10.53%) | 4/37 (10.81%) | 5.26% |
| Top line (0, 00, 1, 2, 3) | 6 to 1 | 5/38 (13.16%) | Not available | 7.89% |
| Six line (6) | 5 to 1 | 6/38 (15.79%) | 6/37 (16.22%) | 5.26% |
| Dozen or column (12) | 2 to 1 | 12/38 (31.58%) | 12/37 (32.43%) | 5.26% |
| Red/black, odd/even, high/low | 1 to 1 | 18/38 (47.37%) | 18/37 (48.65%) | 5.26% |
The 5.26% comes straight from the pockets. A straight-up bet has true odds of 37 to 1 but pays 35 to 1, so the house keeps 2 units in every 38 staked: 2/38 = 5.26%. The top line is worse: it pays 6 to 1 on 5 numbers out of 38, giving (5 × 6 − 33) / 38 = −3/38, or −7.89%. The Wizard of Odds house edge table (opens in a new tab) lists the same figures.
What the double zero costs in pounds
Expected loss is total stake multiplied by the house edge. At £10 a spin for 100 spins you stake £1,000. On an American wheel that costs £52.60 on average; on a single-zero wheel, £27. Over 60 spins at £5, the American wheel costs about £15.78 against £8.10. These are averages, and any one session can land far from them, but the gap never closes.
- Count the green pockets: one zero means a single-zero wheel, 0 and 00 mean an American wheel.
- Look for the 00 box at the top of the betting grid as a second check.
- Read the game's help screen for its RTP: about 94.74% for double zero and 97.30% for single zero.
- If both are available, choose the single-zero table for the same payouts at a lower cost.
Where the American wheel comes from and UK play
The single-zero wheel is credited to François and Louis Blanc at Bad Homburg in 1843 and went on to become the premier game at Monte Carlo, while in the United States the double-zero wheel stayed dominant after spreading up the Mississippi from New Orleans, according to the Wikipedia roulette article (opens in a new tab). Our history of roulette tells the full story.
At UK online casinos the American wheel turns up as an RNG game and as a live table. Evolution's American Roulette uses 0 and 00 and, the developer says, has lower betting limits than its other roulette games. UK rules require at least 5 seconds per game cycle on online roulette, and the £5 and £2 slot stake limits do not apply to it.

Frequently asked questions
How many numbers are on an American roulette wheel?
An American roulette wheel has 38 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36, a single zero and a double zero. A European wheel has 37 because it drops the 00. Both use the same payouts, so the extra pocket on the American wheel lowers your chance of winning without raising what you are paid. Our page on how many numbers are on a roulette wheel compares every version.
What is the house edge on an American wheel?
The house edge is 5.26% on every bet except the five-number top line, which carries 7.89%. The figure is 2/38: payouts assume 36 numbers, but the wheel has 38. That makes American roulette nearly twice as expensive as single-zero roulette at 2.70%. Our roulette house edge guide sets out the figures for every version, including French rules.
Is a European wheel better than an American wheel?
Yes, for the player. A European wheel has one zero and a 2.70% edge, while an American wheel has two and 5.26%, and the payouts are identical. On £1,000 of total bets the average cost is £27 against £52.60. Unless you particularly enjoy the American game, the single-zero wheel gives you more play for the same money. See is European roulette better than American.
Where are 0 and 00 on an American wheel?
They sit directly opposite each other on the wheel, so they split it into two halves. The zero lies between 2 and 28, and the double zero between 1 and 27. On the betting grid the 00 box sits next to the 0 at the top of the layout. Our roulette wheel numbers page shows the full order for both main wheel types.
Can I play American roulette at UK online casinos?
Yes, American roulette is available at some UK-licensed casinos as an RNG game, a live dealer table or both, alongside single-zero versions. Evolution's live American Roulette uses 0 and 00 and has lower betting limits than its other roulette tables. Check each casino's lobby and the game's help screen for its rules and RTP. Our live roulette UK page covers the main live tables.
What is the five-number bet on an American wheel?
It is a bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 together, often called the top line or first five. It pays 6 to 1 and wins 5 times in 38 (13.16%). That combination gives a 7.89% house edge, the highest of any standard roulette bet. You can only place it on a double-zero layout. Our basket and top line bet page explains where the chips go.
