Odds: casino meaning explained
Odds in a casino game compare the number of ways a bet loses with the number of ways it wins. A single number on a European roulette wheel has true odds of 36 to 1, because 36 pockets lose and one wins. The casino, though, pays 35 to 1, and that gap between true odds and payout odds is the house edge.
Key takeaways
- Odds against = losing outcomes to winning outcomes; probability = winning outcomes out of all outcomes.
- True odds describe the chance; payout odds describe what the casino pays.
- House edge = (true odds − payout odds) ÷ (true odds + 1).
- “8 for 1” returns your stake inside the payout, so it equals 7 to 1.
- Straight-up, single zero
- True 36 to 1, pays 35 to 1
- Straight-up, double zero
- True 37 to 1, pays 35 to 1
- Any Seven (craps)
- True 5 to 1, pays 4 to 1
- Craps odds bet
- Paid at true odds, 0% edge
- Edge formula
- (y − x) ÷ (y + 1)
What odds mean in a casino
Odds are a way of writing chance as a ratio. “Odds against” put the losing outcomes first: if a bet has 36 ways to lose and 1 way to win, the odds are 36 to 1 against. Probability puts the same information differently, as wins out of all outcomes: 1 in 37, or 2.70%.
Casinos use the word in two senses, and mixing them up is the most common mistake in our casino glossary. True odds describe how likely the bet is to win. Payout odds describe what the casino pays when it does. In a fair game they would match; in a casino game the payout is always a little short, apart from rare exceptions such as the craps free odds bet.
Converting odds, probability and decimal prices
Every bet can be written three ways. For a chance p, the odds against are (1 − p) ÷ p to 1, and the fair decimal price (stake included) is 1 ÷ p. Here they are for common single-zero roulette bets, using the probabilities in Wizard of Odds’ roulette basics (opens in a new tab):
| Bet | Probability | True odds against | Fair decimal | Casino pays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight-up (1 number) | 1/37 (2.70%) | 36 to 1 | 37.00 | 35 to 1 |
| Split (2 numbers) | 2/37 (5.41%) | 17.5 to 1 | 18.50 | 17 to 1 |
| Dozen (12 numbers) | 12/37 (32.43%) | 25 to 12 (about 2.08 to 1) | 3.08 | 2 to 1 |
| Red or black | 18/37 (48.65%) | 19 to 18 (about 1.06 to 1) | 2.06 | 1 to 1 |
Our odds formats guide covers fractional, decimal and percentage forms in more depth.
“To 1” against “for 1”: reading payout odds
Payout odds written “to 1” give your winnings only, and your stake comes back on top. A £10 straight-up at 35 to 1 returns £360: £350 won plus your £10. Odds written “for 1” include the stake, so “8 for 1” returns £8 for every £1, which is the same as 7 to 1. Live games sometimes use a multiplier instead: Evolution’s First Person Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab) says a straight-up “pays 30x”, which most likely means a 30x total return, the same as the 29 to 1 shown on the live version.
How the gap between odds becomes the house edge
Hannum and Cabot’s textbook Casino Math gives a neat formula: when a bet pays x to 1 and the true odds are y to 1, the house advantage is (y − x) ÷ (y + 1). Try it on bets from the house edge table:
| Bet | True odds (y) | Payout (x) | (y − x) ÷ (y + 1) |
|---|---|---|---|
| European straight-up | 36 to 1 | 35 to 1 | 1 ÷ 37 = 2.70% |
| American straight-up | 37 to 1 | 35 to 1 | 2 ÷ 38 = 5.26% |
| Craps Any Seven | 5 to 1 | 4 to 1 | 1 ÷ 6 = 16.67% |
| Craps Any Craps (2, 3, 12) | 8 to 1 | 7 to 1 | 1 ÷ 9 = 11.11% |
| Craps odds bet on 4 or 10 | 2 to 1 | 2 to 1 | 0 ÷ 3 = 0% |
The craps figures match Wizard of Odds’ craps house edge table (opens in a new tab). The odds bet is the one standard casino bet paid at true odds, which is why it carries no edge; you can only make it after a pass or come bet, which do carry one.
What the odds gap costs in pounds
Expected loss is stake × house edge. A £5 straight-up on a single-zero wheel loses 13.5p on average per spin; on a double-zero wheel, 26.3p. Over 60 spins an hour that is about £8.10 against £15.78, purely because of one extra pocket. The cost per hour page and the house edge calculator let you run your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between odds and probability?
Probability counts wins out of all outcomes; odds compare losses with wins. A single roulette number has a probability of 1 in 37 (2.70%) and odds of 36 to 1 against on a single-zero wheel. Both describe the same chance in different forms. Our probability guide shows how to work out either one from the number of pockets, cards or dice combinations.
What are true odds?
True odds are the real ratio of losing to winning outcomes, before the casino sets its payout. Rolling a 7 with two dice has true odds of 5 to 1, because 30 of the 36 combinations lose and 6 win. The casino pays Any Seven at 4 to 1, and the shortfall is a 16.67% house edge. Our page on true odds against payouts explains more.
What does 35 to 1 mean in roulette?
It means a winning bet pays 35 times your stake in winnings, and you also get the stake back. A £2 straight-up returns £72 in total. The true odds are 36 to 1 on a single-zero wheel and 37 to 1 on a double-zero wheel, so the payout is short either way. Our roulette odds page lists every bet.
Which casino bet has the best odds?
In standard game maths, the craps odds bet is the only common bet with no house edge, because it pays at true odds; you must place a pass or come bet first. Among main bets, baccarat Banker at 1.06% and blackjack with good rules and basic strategy are among the lowest. Our lowest house edge games page compares them.
Does a 2 to 1 payout mean I win two out of three times?
No. Payout odds tell you what is paid, not how often you win. A roulette dozen pays 2 to 1 but wins only 12 times in 37 on a single-zero wheel, about 32.4%. If it won one time in three, the bet would be fair; the shortfall is the 2.70% edge. See our dozens bet guide for worked examples.
Who sets the odds in a casino game?
The game’s rules fix the true odds, through the number of pockets, cards or dice combinations, and the developer sets the payouts. The Gambling Commission requires remote operators to make the rules, payouts and information about the chance of winning available before you play. Our answer to who sets the odds in a casino game goes into more detail.
