Dozen bet in roulette
A dozen bet in roulette backs one block of twelve numbers, 1–12, 13–24 or 25–36, and pays 2 to 1. It wins 12 times in 37 (32.43%) on a single-zero wheel, so roughly one spin in three, and like nearly every bet on that wheel it carries a 2.70% house edge.
Key takeaways
- The three dozens are 1–12, 13–24 and 25–36. Zero (and 00) belongs to none of them.
- A dozen pays 2 to 1 and wins 32.43% of the time on a single-zero wheel, or 31.58% on a double-zero wheel.
- Backing two dozens wins about 65% of spins but each win is only half your total stake, and the edge stays 2.70%.
- A dozen can easily miss five spins running (about a 14% chance), and that tells you nothing about the next spin.
- £5 a spin on a dozen costs about 13.5p a spin on average at a European table and about 26p at an American one.

How the dozen bet in roulette works
The numbers 1 to 36 on a roulette table are split into three equal blocks, each with its own box along the edge of the layout. The boxes are usually labelled 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12, sometimes with the French names P12, M12 and D12 (première, moyenne and dernière douzaine). Put a chip in one of those boxes and you have backed all twelve numbers in that block.
- First dozen: 1 to 12, the four rows nearest the zero.
- Second dozen: 13 to 24, the middle four rows.
- Third dozen: 25 to 36, the four rows furthest from the zero.
If the ball lands on any number in your block, you win. If it lands in another block, or on zero, you lose. Because the chip sits outside the number grid, the dozen is one of the outside bets, alongside the column bet and the even-money bets such as red or black.
Dozen bet payout and odds on each wheel
Dozens pay 2 to 1, as listed in Wizard of Odds' roulette basics (opens in a new tab). A £10 winning chip brings back £30: £20 of winnings plus the original £10. The payout does not change between wheel types; the number of losing pockets does.
| Wheel | Winning pockets | Chance to win | Fair payout | Actual payout | House edge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| European or French (single zero) | 12 of 37 | 32.43% | 25 to 12 (about 2.08 to 1) | 2 to 1 | 2.70% |
| American (double zero) | 12 of 38 | 31.58% | 26 to 12 (about 2.17 to 1) | 2 to 1 | 5.26% |
The fair payout column shows what the bet would need to pay for the casino to have no edge at all. On a single-zero wheel there are 25 losing pockets for every 12 winning ones, so a fair price would be 25 to 12. Paying a flat 2 to 1 instead is how the house keeps its margin. You can see the same pattern across the table on our roulette odds page.
What a dozen bet costs: the house edge in pounds
Picture 37 spins on a single-zero wheel where every pocket comes up once, with £1 on the first dozen each time. Twelve spins win £2 each (£24) and 25 spins lose £1 each (£25). The net result is −£1 on £37 staked: a 2.70% house edge. On a double-zero wheel the same exercise over 38 spins gives £24 won against £26 lost, so −£2 on £38, or 5.26%.
To turn that into an hourly cost you need a pace. As an illustration, suppose you play 40 spins in an hour; live tables often run slower than RNG ones, and UK rules now set a minimum of 5 seconds per game cycle for non-slot casino games.
| Stake per spin | Total staked | Average cost, single zero (2.70%) | Average cost, double zero (5.26%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| £1 | £40 | £1.08 | £2.11 |
| £5 | £200 | £5.41 | £10.53 |
| £10 | £400 | £10.81 | £21.05 |
| £20 | £800 | £21.62 | £42.11 |
These are averages. Over just 40 spins you would expect about 13 wins, but 8 or 18 would not be unusual at all. Our cost per hour guide compares these figures with other casino games.
Betting two dozens at once: how the spread really works
One of the most popular roulette habits is to back two dozens with equal stakes, so that 24 of the 37 numbers win. It feels like a strong position, and it does win often. But look at what each outcome pays when you put £10 on the first dozen and £10 on the second.
| Ball lands on | Pockets | Chance | Net result |
|---|---|---|---|
| One of your two dozens | 24 | 64.86% | +£10 (one dozen wins £20, the other loses £10) |
| The uncovered dozen | 12 | 32.43% | −£20 |
| Zero | 1 | 2.70% | −£20 |
So you win £10 on about two spins in three and lose £20 on about one spin in three. Over 37 spins that averages out to 24 × £10 = £240 won against 13 × £20 = £260 lost, a £20 deficit on £740 staked, which is 2.70% once again. The spread changes the rhythm of the session (frequent small wins, less frequent bigger losses) but not its price. One losing spin cancels two winning ones.
Backing all three dozens just guarantees to lose on zero: two dozens lose and one wins on every other spin, so you break even 36 times in 37 and lose the lot on the 37th.
How to place a dozen bet online
- Open a roulette table and check whether it has one zero or two; single-zero wheels cost half as much.
- Choose your chip value from the chip tray.
- Tap the 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12 box along the edge of the layout (it may say P12, M12 or D12).
- Check the bet slip or highlighted numbers to make sure twelve numbers are covered.
- Confirm before the betting timer ends, and use the re-bet button if you want the same bet on the next spin.
The sleeping dozen myth: can a dozen be due?
Some players watch the results board and wait for a dozen that has not hit for a while, believing it is now due. It is not. Each spin is independent, and the wheel has no memory of the last ten results. A dozen that has missed eight spins in a row has exactly the same 12 in 37 chance on spin nine as it had on spin one.
Missing runs are also more common than people think, because the chance of any one dozen missing a spin is 25 in 37, about 68%.
| Spins in a row | Chance of no hit | Roughly |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 30.8% | nearly 1 in 3 |
| 5 | 14.1% | about 1 in 7 |
| 10 | 2.0% | about 1 in 50 |
| 15 | 0.28% | about 1 in 360 |
With three dozens on the board, one of them will often look cold. Betting on it because it is cold is the gambler's fallacy, and our guide to hot and cold numbers explains why results boards change nothing.
Dozen bet strategy and staking systems
Because a dozen pays 2 to 1, some progressions raise the stake by half after each loss so that one win recovers earlier losses. Others move up after wins. None of them alter the 2.70% cost. Wizard of Odds puts it bluntly on its betting systems page (opens in a new tab): betting systems fail to beat casino games with a house advantage and cannot even dent it.
The risk with a loss-chasing progression is the run it cannot survive. Starting at £5 and raising by 50% after each loss, the stakes go £5, £7.50, £11.25, £16.88, £25.31 and so on; after ten straight misses (a 2% event) the next bet is about £288 and you have already lost about £566. Table limits and your own budget stop the chain long before the maths would. If you want the full treatment, see roulette betting systems and the Martingale page.
The only real strategy choices are which wheel to play and how much to stake. A single-zero table halves the cost against a double-zero one, and a stake that suits your bankroll keeps the game affordable.
Dozen bets in live, RNG and branded roulette
In RNG roulette the pocket is picked by a random number generator, which the Gambling Commission's RTS 7 standard on random outcomes (opens in a new tab) requires to be acceptably random, with no compensated games. Live roulette uses a physical wheel filmed in a studio. Both give the same 2 to 1 dozen and the same edge for the same wheel type. See RNG against live roulette for pace and limits.
In Evolution's Lightning Roulette, dozens keep their standard payout; only straight-up bets change, to 29 to 1 when not multiplied. On French tables the La Partage rule returns half the stake on zero for even-money bets only, so a dozen still loses in full when zero lands and keeps its 2.70% edge.
UK rules that affect online dozen bets

- Since 17 January 2025, autoplay is banned for all online casino games, live roulette included, but a re-bet button is allowed.
- Non-slot casino games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, and you cannot play several games at once.
- Your net spend and time spent must be displayed while you play.
- Credit cards cannot be used to gamble in Great Britain, and age and identity checks come before any deposit or play.

Frequently asked questions
What does a dozen bet pay in roulette?
A dozen bet pays 2 to 1, so a £10 winning chip returns £30 in total: £20 of winnings plus your £10 stake. The payout is the same on European, French and American tables. What differs is the chance of winning, which is 32.43% with one zero and 31.58% with two. Our full roulette payouts table lists every bet's payout on one page.
What are the three dozens in roulette?
The three dozens are 1 to 12, 13 to 24 and 25 to 36. Each has its own betting box on the edge of the layout, often marked 1st 12, 2nd 12 and 3rd 12, or P12, M12 and D12 on French tables. Zero and double zero are not in any dozen, so a dozen bet loses when the ball lands on green. See our roulette table layout guide for where each box sits.
What are the odds of winning a dozen bet?
The odds are 12 in 37 on a single-zero wheel, which is 32.43%, or just under one spin in three. On an American wheel with a double zero they fall to 12 in 38, or 31.58%. Put another way, the odds against are 25 to 12 on single zero, which is why a 2 to 1 payout leaves the house a 2.70% edge. Our probability basics page explains how to count outcomes like this.
Is it a good strategy to bet on two dozens?
Betting two dozens wins about 65% of spins, but it is not a winning strategy. With £10 on each, a win nets only £10 because the other dozen loses, while a miss costs £20. Across all 37 outcomes that still averages a 2.70% loss on every pound staked. It suits players who like frequent small wins, as long as they accept the larger losses. Our roulette strategy that works answer covers why no spread beats the edge.
Is a dozen bet better than red or black?
On a standard single-zero table, a dozen bet and red or black both cost 2.70%, so neither is better value. The dozen wins less often (32.43% against 48.65%) but pays twice as much. The exception is a French table using La Partage, where even-money bets like red lose only half on zero and their edge drops to 1.35%, while dozens stay at 2.70%. See our French roulette guide for those rules.
What happens to a dozen bet if zero comes up?
A dozen bet loses in full when the ball lands on zero, because zero is not part of any dozen. That remains true on French tables, where La Partage returns half the stake on zero only for even-money bets. The lone green pocket is the whole source of the 2.70% house edge on a single-zero wheel. Our page on why zero is green in roulette explains its role.
How long can a dozen go without hitting?
Any dozen can miss for a long stretch purely by chance. The chance of one chosen dozen missing five spins in a row is about 14%, and ten in a row is about 2%. Those runs say nothing about the next spin, which still has a 12 in 37 chance. Waiting for a cold dozen to come back is the gambler's fallacy. Our roulette myths page tackles this and other common beliefs.
Can you bet on dozens and columns at the same time?
Yes, you can combine dozen and column bets, and the two overlap: each dozen shares four numbers with each column. The combination changes how often and how much you win, but every component carries the same 2.70% edge on a single-zero wheel, so the overall cost per pound stays the same. Our column bet page works through a combined example in pounds.
