Payout: casino meaning

A payout is the amount a casino pays on a winning bet, usually written as odds (35 to 1, 3 to 2) on table games or as a multiple of your stake (500x) on slots and game shows. The same word is also used for a game’s payout percentage, better known as RTP, and loosely for withdrawals from your casino account.

Key takeaways

  • “To 1” payouts add your stake back on top; “x” multiples usually include it.
  • A payout is always a little below the true odds, and that gap is the house edge.
  • Payout percentage means RTP: the long-run share of stakes returned.
  • UK rules require payout information before you commit to a bet.

What a payout means in casino games

In its main sense, a payout is the prize for a winning bet, set by the game’s pay table. It is fixed before you bet: a single roulette number always pays 35 to 1, a blackjack natural pays whatever the table states, and a slot symbol pays the amount in its help screen. You will find it in our casino glossary alongside two related ideas, odds and the house edge.

Payouts are always set a little below what the true chance would justify. That shortfall, not any hidden trick, is how casinos earn their margin.

How to read a payout: to 1, for 1 and x

Three formats turn up, and they don’t mean the same thing:

  • “To 1” (or “:1”): winnings only. A £10 bet at 17 to 1 wins £170 and returns £180 with your stake.
  • “For 1”: the return includes the stake. 18 for 1 returns £180 on £10, the same as 17 to 1.
  • “x” multiples: used on slots and game shows, normally a multiple of your stake as a total win. A 500x win on a 20p spin is £100.

Why payouts sit below true odds

Compare a payout with the true odds and the house edge appears. A straight-up on a single-zero wheel has true odds of 36 to 1 and pays 35 to 1, giving 1 ÷ 37 = 2.70%. The baccarat Tie is a sharper example: Wizard of Odds’ baccarat basics (opens in a new tab) gives the eight-deck Tie a 14.36% edge at 8 to 1, falling to 4.844% at 9 to 1. One step on the payout changes the cost of the bet by almost two-thirds, which is why the payout line on a table is worth reading first.

Lightning Roulette shows the trade-off in reverse: it cuts the ordinary straight-up payout to 29 to 1 so it can pay random multipliers of 50x to 500x. The true odds against payouts page has more examples.

Payout percentage: the RTP meaning

When people say a slot has a “96% payout”, they mean its RTP: over a very large number of spins it is expected to return £96 for every £100 staked, a 4% house edge. It describes the long run, not your session, and many slots exist in several RTP versions, so check the game’s help screen for the figure where you play.

Slot payouts for single wins are shown as multiples. Sweet Bonanza lists a 21,100x max win and Gates of Olympus 5,000x; at a 20p stake those caps are £4,220 and £1,000. A max win is a ceiling, not a likely result.

The Gambling Commission’s technical standard RTS 3 (opens in a new tab) requires information on potential prizes and payouts, or how they are calculated, to be easily available before you commit to gamble.

Payout as a withdrawal

Casinos and players also say “payout” for taking money out of an account. That is a payment question rather than a game one: speed depends on the casino’s processing, your payment method and any identity checks. Our guides to withdrawal times and how to withdraw cover it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between payout and odds?

Odds describe the chance of a bet winning; the payout is what the casino pays when it does. A single roulette number has true odds of 36 to 1 on a single-zero wheel but a payout of 35 to 1. The difference between the two is the house edge. Our odds entry explains how to convert between odds and probability.

Does a payout include my stake?

It depends on the format. Payouts written “to 1” are winnings only, and your stake is returned as well, so 35 to 1 on £10 gives back £360. Payouts written “for 1” include the stake. Slot and game show multiples usually show the total win as a multiple of your bet. Our roulette payouts page works through each bet.

What is a good payout percentage for a slot?

A higher RTP means a lower average cost, so 96% costs less over time than 94%. But RTP is a long-run figure; a single session can go either way, and volatility matters for how a budget lasts. The same slot may run at different RTPs at different casinos. Our page on whether a higher RTP slot is better explains the trade-offs.

What is the highest payout in roulette?

On standard roulette, the highest payout is 35 to 1 for a straight-up bet on one number, which wins 1 time in 37 on a single-zero wheel. Lightning variants can pay more on a struck number, up to 500x in Lightning Roulette, but pay only 29 to 1 otherwise. See our answer on the highest payout in roulette for the details.

Why do some blackjack tables pay 6 to 5?

A 6 to 5 payout on naturals raises the house edge. On £10, a natural wins £12 instead of £15, and Wizard of Odds puts the cost to the player at 1.39%, many times bigger than most other rule changes. The help screen or table felt shows which payout applies. Our blackjack payouts guide compares the common versions.

Are casino payouts taxed in the UK?

No, gambling winnings aren’t taxed for UK players, so a payout from a UK-licensed casino is yours in full. Operators pay remote gaming duty on their profits instead, and that rate rose from 21% to 40% on 1 April 2026. Our gambling tax page sets out who pays what.
