Do live casinos use real cards?
Do live casinos use real cards? Yes. Live blackjack, baccarat and casino poker tables are dealt by a human dealer from physical decks, usually held in a shoe, and the cards are read into the game software so bets settle automatically. The exceptions are RNG games dressed up to look live, such as Evolution's animated First Person range, which use no physical cards at all.
Key takeaways
- Live dealer card games use physical decks dealt from a shoe in a studio.
- Optical character recognition turns the dealt cards into data the software can settle.
- Studios employ shufflers and reshuffle shoes long before the last card, so live shoes aren't reshuffled every hand like RNG games.
- First Person games look similar but are RNG: no real cards are involved.
- Live card tables
- Physical decks, human dealer

- Optical character recognition (OCR)
- Lightning Blackjack shoe
- 8 decks, reshuffled after about 4 (Wizard of Odds)

- First Person games
- RNG with 3D animation, no cards
Do live casinos use real cards? Yes, at live dealer tables
When you sit at a live casino card table, the cards you see are physical playing cards. A dealer takes them from a shoe, places them on a real table and turns them face up in front of cameras. Live dealer games depend on results produced in real time by a dealer and physical equipment, and that's the whole difference between live play and an RNG game.
The software's job is to read and settle, not to decide. The dealt cards are captured and converted into data, so the game knows the totals, pays winning bets and shows your hand's value on screen. If you've ever wondered why the on-screen total appears a moment after the dealer places a card, that's the reading step happening.
How real cards become results on your screen
The Wikipedia overview of online casinos (opens in a new tab) describes optical character recognition (OCR) as the technology that turns a dealer's physical results into data the game software can use. In a card game, that means each card's rank and suit is recognised as it's dealt. The same overview describes a live set-up as having at least three rooms: the studio, a server and software room, and an analyst's room.
| Stage | What happens | Who or what does it |
|---|---|---|
| Shuffle | Decks are shuffled and loaded into the shoe | Dealer or dedicated shufflers |
| Deal | Cards are drawn from the shoe and placed face up | Live dealer |
| Capture | Cameras film the table; the card is recognised | Cameras and OCR |
| Settle | Totals are calculated and bets paid or taken | Game server |
| Oversight | Disputes between players and croupiers are settled | Pit boss and studio staff |
Camera work can be elaborate. Evolution says its Live Baccarat Squeeze uses more than 15 cameras, and Pragmatic Play says its studios use multiple 4K cameras. The streaming side is covered in how live casino works.
Shoes, decks and shuffling at live blackjack and baccarat tables
Live card tables deal from a shoe, a box that holds several decks shuffled together. The deck count depends on the game, and the game's rules tell you what it is. A few published examples:
- Lightning Blackjack (Evolution): Wizard of Odds reports eight decks, reshuffled after roughly four decks have been dealt.
- Infinite Blackjack (Evolution): Wizard of Odds lists it as an eight-deck game in which the dealer stands on soft 17.
- Power Blackjack (Evolution): eight decks with every 9 and 10 removed, which leaves 64 fewer cards in the shoe (eight decks × four 9s and four 10s). Picture cards stay in.
- Speed Baccarat (Evolution): cards are dealt face up to speed the round to about 27 seconds, against about 48 for standard baccarat.
Someone has to shuffle all those cards. Pragmatic Play's live casino page (opens in a new tab) says it employs teams of shufflers to keep its card tables running without interruption. At Evolution's high-limit Salon Privé tables, players even get a say in the shuffle, along with the choice of dealer and game speed.
Why live shoes differ from RNG decks
In an RNG game the virtual deck is usually reshuffled before every round. Wizard of Odds on online blackjack (opens in a new tab) says most online casinos shuffle after every hand, and that shuffling after every hand reduces the house edge very slightly, by 0.02% in a six-deck game. A live shoe isn't reshuffled after every hand, but it's reshuffled well before the end: about halfway through, in the Lightning Blackjack example. For the different methods, see continuous shuffling.
What real cards mean for the odds
Physical cards follow the same arithmetic as virtual ones. In an eight-deck shoe there are 416 cards: 32 aces and 128 ten-value cards. The chance of being dealt a blackjack from a fresh shoe is:
2 × (32/416) × (128/415) = about 4.75%, or a little under one hand in 21.
| Shoe | Total cards | Aces | Ten-value cards | Chance first card is an ace |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 decks | 312 | 24 | 96 | 24/312 = 7.69% |
| 8 decks | 416 | 32 | 128 | 32/416 = 7.69% |
| 8 decks, no 9s or 10s (Power Blackjack) | 352 | 32 | 96 | 32/352 = 9.09% |
The Power Blackjack row shows why rule changes matter. Removing the 10s takes 32 ten-value cards out of the shoe (jacks, queens and kings stay), which changes the odds of blackjacks and of strong doubles. That's why each variant has its own house edge, and why Evolution compensates with extra options such as tripling and quadrupling down.
Real cards and card counting: the theory and the reality
Because a live shoe isn't reshuffled every hand, people often ask whether card counting works online. As history and theory, counting means tracking which cards have gone, an idea set out by Edward O. Thorp in his 1962 book Beat the Dealer. It isn't illegal under British law, but casinos can refuse to serve suspected counters.
In practice, RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, which removes any value in tracking cards, and live tables generally use shuffling methods that defeat it, such as reshuffling with half the shoe or more still undealt. Live blackjack is better treated as a game where basic strategy keeps the house edge low, not one where the house edge can be removed.
When live-looking casino games don't use real cards
Not everything that looks like a live table has a dealer and a deck. Evolution's First Person games are RNG games with 3D animation; card deals, wheel spins and dice results are all decided by a random number generator. They include First Person Blackjack and Lightning Baccarat, and a Go Live button moves you to the real table.
| Feature | Live dealer table | First Person (RNG) | Standard RNG table |
|---|---|---|---|
| Physical cards | Yes | No | No |
| Human dealer | Yes | No, animated | No |
| How results are made | Dealt from a shoe | Random number generator | Random number generator |
| Shuffle | Shoe reshuffled periodically | Typically every round | Typically every round |
| Shared with other players | Yes | No | No |
Infinite Blackjack is a special case: the cards are real, but every player shares the same two starting cards, then makes their own decisions. Our comparison of live and RNG games goes through the trade-offs.
How to tell whether a game uses real cards
- Look at the lobby section: real dealer tables sit under live casino, not under table games.
- Check the game name and provider: names such as First Person, or a plain RNG table, mean no physical cards.
- Open the table and watch the dealer: you should see cards drawn from a shoe and placed on the felt.
- Read the game rules for the number of decks and how the shoe is handled.
- Check that the casino holds a Gambling Commission licence, so the game's rules and settlement are covered by UK standards.
UK rules that apply to live card games
The Gambling Commission's technical standards include a section for live dealer studios, and the general rules apply too. Game rules and the RTP or house edge must be available before you bet. From 17 January 2025 autoplay is banned for all online casino games, live casino included, non-slot casino games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, and your net spend and time played must be shown in real time. Each is explained on live casino rules in the UK.
Real cards don't make a game cheaper or dearer. Each table's rules set the house edge, and losses are likely over time at any of them.

Frequently asked questions
Are live blackjack cards real or computer-generated?
They're real at live dealer tables. A dealer draws physical cards from a shoe and places them face up in front of cameras, and recognition technology reads each card so the software can total the hands and settle bets. Computer-generated cards belong to RNG games, including animated versions such as First Person Blackjack. Our live blackjack guide explains how a live round runs.
How does the software know which card was dealt?
It reads the card from the table. Optical character recognition turns the dealer's physical results into data the game software can use, so rank and suit are captured as each card lands. The server then calculates totals and pays bets. That's why the on-screen total follows the dealer's action by a moment. The rooms and staff involved are described in live casino studios.
How many decks do live blackjack tables use?
It depends on the game, so check its rules. Wizard of Odds lists Evolution's Infinite Blackjack and Lightning Blackjack as eight-deck games, and Power Blackjack uses eight decks with the 9s and 10s removed. Wizard of Odds' survey of live games also lists one, three and six-deck tables. Fewer decks help the player slightly. See does the number of decks matter in blackjack for the figures.
Do live casinos shuffle after every hand?
No, live shoes are dealt for a while and then reshuffled, unlike RNG games, which usually reshuffle every round. Wizard of Odds reports that Lightning Blackjack's eight-deck shoe is reshuffled after roughly four decks. Pragmatic Play employs teams of shufflers to keep card tables running. Our shuffle glossary entry explains the terms you'll see in game rules.
Can you count cards at a live online blackjack table?
Not in any useful way. Card counting is legal in Britain, but casinos can refuse to serve counters, and live tables generally use shuffling methods that defeat it, such as reshuffling with much of the shoe undealt. RNG blackjack reshuffles every hand, so counting there is pointless. Basic strategy is the sensible way to keep costs down. Read our card counting page for the history.
Are live baccarat cards real too?
Yes, live baccarat is dealt from a physical shoe in the same way as blackjack. Evolution's Speed Baccarat deals the cards face up to shorten rounds to about 27 seconds, and its Baccarat Squeeze uses more than 15 cameras so players can watch cards being slowly revealed. The drawing rules are fixed, so there are no player decisions. Our live baccarat guide covers the formats.
Is a game with real cards fairer than an RNG game?
Neither is fairer if both are properly run. Licensed RNG games must meet the Gambling Commission's randomness standards and be tested before release, while live games rely on physical equipment and studio controls. What changes the cost is the rule set: deck count, payouts and dealer rules set the house edge. Our page on whether live casino games are rigged goes further.
Why does Power Blackjack remove the 9s and 10s?
Taking out the 9s and 10s reduces the number of ten-value cards, which makes the shoe less friendly to the player, and Evolution balances that by letting players double, triple or quadruple down on any first two cards. Removing 64 cards from eight decks leaves 352. Jacks, queens and kings stay in. See our Power Blackjack page for the full rules.
