Lightning Roulette: payouts, RTP and odds
Lightning Roulette is Evolution’s live single-zero roulette game in which one to five Lucky Numbers are struck each round and pay 50x to 500x on straight-up bets. The trade-off is that an ordinary straight-up win pays 29 to 1 instead of 35 to 1, so the multipliers are funded by smaller everyday wins on single numbers.
Key takeaways
- Splits, corners, dozens, red/black and every other non-straight bet pay exactly as in European roulette, with the usual 2.70% house edge.
- A straight-up pays 29 to 1, or 50x to 500x if your number is a Lucky Number and it wins.
- UK operator game pages list the RTP as 97.10% to 97.30%; Evolution’s own pages publish no figure.
- The multipliers make single-number results far streakier. They don’t make the game cheaper to play.

What Lightning Roulette is and who makes it
Lightning Roulette is a live dealer game from Evolution, released in 2018, that bolts a random multiplier draw onto an ordinary European roulette wheel. The wheel has the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single green zero, so the underlying probabilities are the familiar 37-pocket ones covered in our roulette guide.
The studio set-up is unusual. A presenter hosts the table, but the ball itself is launched by an Auto Roulette wheel. Once betting closes, the presenter pulls a lever and between one and five numbers are struck by lightning. Those Lucky Numbers carry multiplied payouts for that round only.
Evolution doesn’t undersell it: the studio calls Lightning Roulette ‘the most successful table game in the last 20 years of online gaming’ in its XXXtreme launch announcement (opens in a new tab). Popularity says nothing about value, though, so the rest of this page looks at what the multipliers actually cost.
How to play Lightning Roulette, step by step
A round follows the normal live roulette rhythm, with one extra beat between the close of betting and the spin.
- Choose a chip value and place bets on the layout during the betting window. Any standard bet is allowed, from a single number to red or black.
- Betting closes. The presenter pulls the lever and one to five Lucky Numbers are picked, each shown with its multiplier of 50x to 500x.
- The Auto Roulette wheel launches the ball and it settles in one pocket.
- If the winning number is a Lucky Number and you backed it straight up, that bet is paid at the multiplier shown.
- A straight-up on a winning number that wasn’t struck pays 29 to 1. All other winning bets pay the standard roulette rates.
- Lucky Numbers clear, and a fresh set is drawn next round. Nothing carries over.
Lightning Roulette payouts against standard European roulette
Evolution’s Lightning Roulette game page (opens in a new tab) states that non-multiplied straight-ups pay 29 to 1, and that other bets such as splits, corners, red/black and dozens pay the same as in standard roulette. That leaves just one row of the paytable changed.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Standard payout | Lightning payout | Chance per spin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight-up (not struck) | 1 | 35 to 1 | 29 to 1 | 1 in 37 (2.70%) |
| Straight-up (Lucky Number) | 1 | 35 to 1 | 50x to 500x | Depends on the draw |
| Split | 2 | 17 to 1 | 17 to 1 | 2 in 37 (5.41%) |
| Street | 3 | 11 to 1 | 11 to 1 | 3 in 37 (8.11%) |
| Corner | 4 | 8 to 1 | 8 to 1 | 4 in 37 (10.81%) |
| Six line | 6 | 5 to 1 | 5 to 1 | 6 in 37 (16.22%) |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2 to 1 | 2 to 1 | 12 in 37 (32.43%) |
| Red/black, odd/even, high/low | 18 | 1 to 1 | 1 to 1 | 18 in 37 (48.65%) |
So a £1 straight-up bet that wins without lightning returns £30 in total (£29 winnings plus your £1), where a standard table would return £36. A £1 split, corner or dozen returns exactly what it would anywhere else. For the full standard grid, see our roulette payouts table.
Sources disagree on how to express the base straight-up. Evolution’s live page and Betfair’s guide say 29 to 1; Paddy Power’s game page says ‘30:1’ and Evolution’s First Person page says ‘pays 30x’. A 30x total return is the same thing as 29 to 1 plus your stake back, so 29 to 1 is the figure used here.
Lucky Number odds: how often a multiplied win lands
To win a multiplier you need two things in the same round: your number must be struck, and the ball must land on it. The lever draw has no link to where the ball falls, so if you treat the two as independent, the chances multiply.
With one Lucky Number, a single chosen number is struck 1 time in 37 and wins 1 time in 37, so a boosted win comes along 1 time in 1,369 on average. With five Lucky Numbers the chance of being struck rises to 5 in 37, and the combined chance to 5 in 1,369, or about 1 in 274.
| Lucky Numbers this round | Chance your number is struck | Chance it is struck and wins | Roughly 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1/37 | 1/1,369 | 1,369 |
| 2 | 2/37 | 2/1,369 | 685 |
| 3 | 3/37 | 3/1,369 | 456 |
| 4 | 4/37 | 4/1,369 | 342 |
| 5 | 5/37 | 5/1,369 | 274 |
Evolution doesn’t publish how often each count of Lucky Numbers appears, or how often each multiplier from 50x to 500x is drawn, so a single overall figure can’t be calculated from public data. What the table does show is the scale: even in a five-strike round, a straight-up player waits hundreds of rounds, on average, for a boosted hit.
Lightning Roulette RTP and house edge explained
Evolution’s public pages give no RTP for Lightning Roulette. UK operator pages do: Paddy Power’s Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab) lists 97.10% to 97.30%, and Betfair Casino shows the same range for the First Person version. Treat ‘up to 97.30%’ as the best available figure.
Part of that range can be checked with plain arithmetic. Every bet other than the straight-up pays standard rates on a 37-pocket wheel, so a £1 even-money bet returns £2 eighteen times in 37: £36 back for every £37 staked, a 97.30% return and a 2.70% house edge. The same 36/37 result holds for splits, streets, corners, six lines, dozens and columns, as Wizard of Odds’ roulette basics (opens in a new tab) show for the standard game.
The straight-up is where the maths moves. Ignoring lightning, a 29 to 1 payout returns £30 once in 37 spins, which is only 81.08% of the money staked. If the operator range means straight-ups sit at the lower 97.10% figure, the multipliers must be worth about 16p per £1 staked on average (97.10% minus 81.08%). Operators don’t say which bets carry which figure, so check the game’s help screen for the exact breakdown.
| Bet | Return from normal wins | Return from multipliers | Total return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red/black (18 numbers) | 97.30% | None | 97.30% |
| Dozen (12 numbers) | 97.30% | None | 97.30% |
| Straight-up (1 number) | 81.08% | About 16% if the total is 97.10% | 97.10% to 97.30% (help screen) |
What Lightning Roulette costs in pounds
Expected loss is simply stake multiplied by house edge, and it’s a long-run average, so any single session can land well above or below it. Evolution doesn’t publish a round length for Lightning Roulette, so the table works per 100 rounds instead of per hour.
| Bet per round | Edge used | Total staked | Average cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| £1 on red | 2.70% | £100 | £2.70 |
| £2 split across two dozens | 2.70% | £200 | £5.40 |
| £1 on one number | 2.90% (if RTP is 97.10%) | £100 | £2.90 |
| £5 spread over five numbers | 2.90% (if RTP is 97.10%) | £500 | £14.50 |
The gap between 2.70% and a possible 2.90% is small: 20p per £100 staked. What changes far more is how the money moves. Our cost per hour guide shows how to turn these figures into an hourly budget once you know a table’s pace.
Why straight-ups in Lightning Roulette swing so hard
Picture a £1 chip on one number for 37 rounds, roughly the length of the cycle in which it should hit once. On a standard table, that one hit returns £36 and you finish about £1 down. In Lightning Roulette a plain hit returns only £30, leaving you about £7 down, unless the hit happens to be struck, in which case a 50x to 500x payout puts you ahead for the stretch.
Most stretches end in the first way and a few end in the second. That’s what higher volatility means: the average cost barely changes, but results spread out much further around it. A bankroll that comfortably lasts an evening on a standard wheel can drain faster on Lightning straight-ups, because the ordinary wins that cushion losses are 6 units smaller.
Outside bets don’t have this problem, but they also never touch a multiplier. That’s the honest trade: if the lightning doesn’t interest you, a standard single-zero table gives you 35 to 1 straight-ups at the same 2.70% edge.
First Person Lightning Roulette: the RNG version
Evolution also makes an animated version. Its First Person Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab) describes it as an RNG game with one to five Lucky Numbers per round and multipliers of 50x to 500x. There’s no presenter, so you set the pace within the UK’s minimum game-cycle time. A ‘Go Live’ button moves you across to the studio version of the same game.
In the UK, RNG games must be ‘acceptably random’ and simulated wheels must keep the same probabilities as the real device. Our page on RNG versus live roulette covers those rules, and First Person games explains the wider Evolution range.
Lightning Roulette strategy: what helps and what doesn’t
No bet, staking pattern or number choice changes the house edge, and the Lightning draw is no exception. A few points do help you control the cost.
- Pick the bet type for the experience you want. Straight-ups are the only route to multipliers; every other bet plays like standard roulette.
- Don’t chase struck numbers. Lucky Numbers are redrawn every round, and past strikes tell you nothing about future ones. That’s the gambler’s fallacy, the same error as following hot and cold numbers.
- Covering more numbers isn’t a shortcut. Twenty straight-ups at £1 each cost twenty times as much as one; the edge on each chip is unchanged.
- Staking systems still fail. Martingale and its cousins only rearrange losses, as our roulette betting systems page shows with the numbers.
- Set a budget before the session. Decide what the evening is worth to you as entertainment and stop there.
Playing Lightning Roulette online in the UK
Live roulette falls under the Gambling Commission’s casino rules rather than the slot rules, and a few of them shape how the game works on a UK site:
- Autoplay has been banned for all online casino games, live tables included, since 17 January 2025. A re-bet button that repeats your last stake is allowed.
- Non-slot casino games must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, and you can’t play several games at once.
- Your net spend and time spent must be shown in real time.
- The £5 and £2 online slot stake limits don’t apply to roulette; table limits are set by the game and the casino.
- Your age and identity must be checked before you can deposit or play, and credit cards can’t be used to gamble.
There’s more on these in UK rules for live casino and in the wider round-up of Lightning live games. If you want to compare this game with its higher-multiplier sibling, read our XXXtreme Lightning Roulette guide or the side-by-side Lightning vs XXXtreme comparison.
Is Lightning Roulette worth playing?
It suits players who mostly bet single numbers and enjoy the occasional chance of a large payout, accepting more downswings in return. It suits outside-bet players equally well, since their bets are untouched, though they gain nothing from the lightning. Our answer page is Lightning Roulette worth playing? weighs this up in more detail.
Advantages
- Single-zero wheel with standard payouts on every non-straight bet
- Lucky Numbers add 50x to 500x payouts on straight-ups

Drawbacks
- Plain straight-up wins pay 29 to 1, not 35 to 1

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Lightning Roulette?
UK operator game pages list Lightning Roulette’s RTP as 97.10% to 97.30%. Evolution doesn’t publish a figure on its own pages. Arithmetic confirms that every non-straight bet returns 97.30%, because those bets pay standard rates on a 37-pocket wheel. The straight-up, which pays 29 to 1 plus multipliers, makes up the rest of the range, so check the help screen for its exact figure. Our RTP explainer shows what the percentage means in practice.
What is the maximum win in Lightning Roulette?
The top multiplier is 500x on a straight-up bet. That needs your number to be struck as a Lucky Number with the highest multiplier and then to win the spin, which is a rare combination. On a £1 chip that is a £500 payout. The table’s maximum stake and the casino’s own limits also cap what you can win, so check both. See our multiplier entry for how multipliers are applied.
Why does a straight-up pay only 29 to 1 in Lightning Roulette?
The lower base payout funds the Lucky Number multipliers. Instead of 35 to 1, an unstruck winning straight-up pays 29 to 1, and the money taken from those ordinary wins is handed back through occasional 50x to 500x payouts. Other bets keep their normal rates. Compare this with the standard straight-up bet and the full payout table.
How many Lucky Numbers are there in each round?
Each round has between one and five Lucky Numbers, drawn after betting closes. Each comes with its own multiplier between 50x and 500x, and all of them clear before the next round. Evolution doesn’t publish how often each count appears. Because the draw is fresh every time, previous Lucky Numbers have no bearing on future ones, a point our gambler’s fallacy page explains.
Is Lightning Roulette better than European roulette?
It isn’t cheaper, but it is different. Outside and split-type bets are identical to European roulette at a 2.70% edge. Straight-ups trade 6 units of every ordinary win for a shot at multipliers, which makes results far more uneven with a similar or slightly higher average cost. If you only bet colours or dozens, the two games cost the same; if you like steady straight-up wins, a standard table suits you better.
Can I use a casino bonus on Lightning Roulette?
Usually not in full, so read the terms first. Most UK welcome offers are built around slots, and live games are often excluded or contribute less towards the 10x maximum wagering. The free spins offers at many casinos can only be used on selected slots. Our guide to live casino bonuses and the answer to can I use a bonus on live casino? cover the detail.
Is Lightning Roulette random?
Yes. The live game uses a physical single-zero wheel with the ball launched automatically, and the Gambling Commission’s technical standards require game results to be acceptably random. The RNG First Person version must keep the same probabilities as a real wheel. Neither the Lucky Number draw nor the ball has any memory of earlier rounds. Read is online roulette random? for how this is tested.
Can I play Lightning Roulette for free in the UK?
Free play depends on the casino and the version: check whether a demo of the RNG First Person game is listed, because live studio rounds are played for real money. Under UK rules you must have your age verified even to play free demo games, so expect to complete checks first. A demo is a useful way to learn the layout and lightning sequence without cost. Our how to play roulette guide covers the basics before you start.
