Gates of Olympus slots
Gates of Olympus slots are Pragmatic Play’s Zeus-themed series, built on a pay-anywhere grid where random multipliers can land on any spin. Four games are in our checked data, from the 5,000x original to the 25,000x Gates of Olympus 2500. Here’s how they differ, what the multipliers really do, and what each version costs per hour.
Key takeaways
- The original, 1000 and 2500 editions share a 6 × 5 pay-anywhere grid and RTPs of 96.50% to 96.52%.
- The main difference between them is the ceiling: 5,000x, 15,000x and 25,000x.
- Zeus vs Hades is a spin-off with 15 paylines, two volatility modes and a 96.07% default RTP.
- Multipliers raise the size of rare wins; they don’t change the long-run return shown in the RTP.

What defines the Gates of Olympus slots
Pragmatic Play names Gates of Olympus among its best-known games, alongside Sweet Bonanza and Big Bass Bonanza. The setting is Greek myth, with Zeus presiding over a grid of gems and relics, but what has made it a series is the mechanic: no paylines, wins for 8 or more matching symbols anywhere, and multiplier symbols that can turn a small win into a large one.
Pragmatic, headquartered in Gibraltar and licensed by the Gambling Commission among more than 30 regulators according to its own website (opens in a new tab), has since released higher-ceiling editions and a two-god spin-off. For the wider mythology genre, our Greek mythology slots page covers other studios, and the slot themes hub lists every series we cover.
How the Gates of Olympus multipliers work
Pragmatic’s game page for the original describes six tumbling reels where 8 to 30 matching symbols anywhere win up to 50x the stake. After each win the paying symbols clear and new ones drop in, the cascading reels idea, so a single spin can pay several times.
The distinctive part is the random multiplier symbol. On the original game these can carry values up to 500x and, unlike many slots, they can land in the base game as well as the free spins. Four or more scatters start a round of 15 free spins, and during that round Pragmatic says winning multiplier values are added to a running total.
A worked example at 40p a spin
| Outcome | Symbol win | Multiplier on screen | Paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small win, no multiplier | 80p (2x) | None | 80p |
| Small win with a 5x | 80p (2x) | 5x | £4.00 |
| Small win with a 100x | 80p (2x) | 100x | £80.00 |
| No winning symbols | £0 | 500x | £0 |
These are illustrations of the published rule, not typical spins. The last row matters most: a big multiplier on a losing spin pays nothing, and the game can’t present a return that doesn’t beat your stake as a win under UK rules. Our multipliers guide compares how different games apply them.
Every Gates of Olympus slot compared
| Slot | RTP | Volatility | Layout | How it pays | Max win | Released |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | 96.50% | High | 6 × 5 | Scatter pays, 8+ anywhere | 5,000x | Check the help screen |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | 96.50% | High | 6 × 5 | Scatter pays | 15,000x | Check the help screen |
| Gates of Olympus 2500 | 96.52% | High | 6 × 5 | Scatter pays | 25,000x | Check the help screen |
| Zeus vs Hades | 96.07% (default) | High (Olympus) or very high (Hades) | Check the help screen | 15 fixed paylines | 15,000x | 2023 |
The three main editions are almost identical on long-run return: 0.02 of a percentage point separates them. What changes is how far the top end stretches. A game with the same RTP and a ceiling five times higher has to balance that by making more of its ordinary spins pay less, so the 2500 edition should be expected to feel swingier than the original even though both are labelled high volatility.
What the 1000 and 2500 in the names suggest
Pragmatic uses these suffixes across several series. For its Starlight Princess 1000, the developer said the number refers to multiplier symbols worth up to 1000x, against 500x on the original. It’s reasonable to expect a similar idea in Gates of Olympus 1000 and 2500, but we haven’t confirmed their multiplier ranges, so read the paytable before you play. What our checked data does confirm is the max win: 15,000x for the 1000 edition and 25,000x for the 2500.
A bigger multiplier range doesn’t make a game more generous. The RTP is fixed by the maths of the whole game, so larger possible multipliers are paid for elsewhere, usually by smaller or rarer wins in between.
Zeus vs Hades: the paylines spin-off
Zeus vs Hades borrows the cast but not the grid. It pays on 15 fixed paylines, so symbol position matters again, and it lets you choose between two modes: Olympus, rated high volatility, and Hades, rated very high. Both share a 15,000x ceiling and a 96.07% default RTP.
That default is about 0.43 of a point below the main series. On £1,000 of total stakes, the average cost is £39.30 at 96.07% against £35.00 at 96.50%, a difference of £4.30. Picking the Hades mode doesn’t change the average; it changes how unevenly the wins arrive.
Gates of Olympus max win at the UK stake caps
The UK has two slot stake limits, so the highest reachable prize depends on your age as well as the game. Here are the ceilings at 10p and at each cap:
| Slot | Max win | At 10p | At £2 (18–24 cap) | At £5 (25+ cap) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gates of Olympus | 5,000x | £500 | £10,000 | £25,000 |
| Gates of Olympus 1000 | 15,000x | £1,500 | £30,000 | £75,000 |
| Zeus vs Hades | 15,000x | £1,500 | £30,000 | £75,000 |
| Gates of Olympus 2500 | 25,000x | £2,500 | £50,000 | £125,000 |
These are ceilings, not targets. Developers don’t publish how often a maximum is reached, and nobody can tell you when one is due, because each spin is independent. Our page on what a slot’s max win means explains how caps work.
Gates of Olympus RTP and the cost of an hour’s play
A slot’s cost is its house edge (100% minus the RTP) multiplied by everything you stake. Speed matters as much as stake size. As an illustration, suppose you play 300 spins in an hour, about one every 12 seconds:
| Stake | Staked per hour | At 96.50% (original, 1000) | At 96.07% (Zeus vs Hades) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10p | £30 | £1.05 | £1.18 |
| 40p | £120 | £4.20 | £4.72 |
| £1 | £300 | £10.50 | £11.79 |
| £2 | £600 | £21.00 | £23.58 |
With high volatility your real result in any hour will be far from these averages, most often worse, occasionally much better. The averages are still the best guide to what the entertainment costs over time. Our cost per hour guide compares slots with table games, and Wizard of Odds on slots (opens in a new tab) covers the maths of RTP and volatility in more depth.
Other Greek mythology slots to compare
Other studios have their own Olympians, and they play quite differently. Several are medium volatility, which suits players who want a steadier session.
- Rise of Olympus (Play’n GO): 96.50% RTP, high volatility, a 5 × 5 grid paying for 3 or more matching symbols in a row or column, 5,000x max win.
- Ancient Fortunes: Zeus (Games Global): 96.02%, medium volatility, 10 lines that pay both ways, 1,399x max win.
- Rise of Athena (Play’n GO): 96.2% with lower versions, medium volatility, 10 fixed paylines, 5,000x.
- Age of the Gods (Playtech): 95.02% including the jackpot contribution, 20 paylines, with the Ultimate Power progressive jackpot as its top prize.
Myths about Gates of Olympus that cost players money
Advantages
- Each spin is random and independent; the game keeps no memory of earlier spins.
- The RTP shown in the help screen is a long-run average across the game’s whole life.
- A smaller stake gives you more spins for the same budget at the same percentage cost.
Drawbacks
- Myth: a multiplier is ‘due’ after a long run without one.
- Myth: the game pays better at certain times of day or after a big loss.
- Myth: raising your stake after losses improves your chances of the feature.
None of those myths survives the maths. Chasing a multiplier by raising stakes simply increases how much you lose on average, and the gambler’s fallacy explains why a streak tells you nothing about the next spin.
UK rules for Gates of Olympus online
At a UK-licensed casino every Gates of Olympus game must follow the same rules as other online slots: a £5 maximum stake per spin if you’re 25 or over and £2 if you’re 18 to 24 (see the online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab)), at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo and no celebrating a return that doesn’t beat your stake. Feature buy-ins have not been offered to British players since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020. The full set is on our game design rules page.
How to play Gates of Olympus responsibly
- Choose the edition: the original for the lowest ceiling, 1000 or 2500 for a higher one, or Zeus vs Hades for paylines and a mode choice.
- Open the paytable and confirm the RTP, the multiplier values and how many scatters start the feature.
- Set a deposit limit and a time reminder in your account before you play.
- Pick a stake that gives you enough spins for your budget, within the UK cap for your age.
- Spin manually; each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds under UK rules.
- Stop when you reach your limit, and don’t raise the stake to win back losses.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Gates of Olympus?
The original Gates of Olympus has a published RTP of 96.50%, the same as Gates of Olympus 1000. The 2500 edition is listed at 96.52% and the Zeus vs Hades spin-off at 96.07% by default. An RTP of 96.50% means an average cost of £3.50 per £100 staked over the long run, though any single session can be very different. Check the help screen for your casino’s setting, and see our RTP guide.
What is the max win on Gates of Olympus?
The original Gates of Olympus has a maximum win of 5,000 times the stake, Gates of Olympus 1000 and Zeus vs Hades go to 15,000x, and Gates of Olympus 2500 to 25,000x. At a 10p stake that’s £500, £1,500 and £2,500. A maximum is the most the game can pay, not something to expect. Our Gates of Olympus 2500 review has the full specification of the highest-ceiling version.
Which Gates of Olympus is best?
None is best in pounds over the long run, because the three main editions have almost the same RTP (96.50% to 96.52%). The choice is about how swingy you want the game to be. The original has the lowest ceiling at 5,000x, while the 1000 and 2500 editions stretch to 15,000x and 25,000x, which usually means more spins that pay little. Zeus vs Hades adds paylines and a mode choice. Start with our original Gates of Olympus review.
How many scatters trigger Gates of Olympus free spins?
Four or more scatter symbols trigger 15 free spins on the original Gates of Olympus, according to Pragmatic Play’s game page. During the round, winning multiplier values are added to a running total. The later editions may use different rules, so read the paytable of the version you play. We don’t quote how often the feature lands, because developers don’t publish that. Our free spins feature guide explains how these rounds work in general.
Can multipliers land in the Gates of Olympus base game?
Yes. On the original Gates of Olympus, Pragmatic Play says random multiplier symbols worth up to 500x can land in both the base game and the free spins. A multiplier only pays if the spin also produces a winning combination; on a losing spin it pays nothing. That’s why big multipliers are memorable but rarely change a session’s outcome. Our multipliers explainer shows how different slots apply them.
Is Gates of Olympus high volatility?
Yes. All three main Gates of Olympus editions are rated high volatility, and Zeus vs Hades offers a high-volatility Olympus mode and a very-high Hades mode. In practice that means long runs of small or no wins, with much of the return arriving in occasional large ones. A budget can run out before the feature lands. Our volatility guide explains how to match volatility to your budget.
What is the most you can stake on Gates of Olympus in the UK?
The most you can stake is £5 a spin if you’re 25 or over and £2 if you’re 18 to 24, because the Gambling Commission’s online slot stake limits apply to every Gates of Olympus game. The limits started on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025. Individual casinos may set lower maximums. Our page on the maximum stake on a UK slot explains the rules.
Can you buy free spins on Gates of Olympus in the UK?
No. Versions offered in other countries may include a feature buy, but since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. The Commission said they risked breaching its standards on game rules and on encouraging players to chase losses. You reach the free spins only by landing the scatters. See our feature buy rules page.
