Slot multipliers explained

Slot multipliers increase a win by a fixed factor: a 5x multiplier turns a £2 win into £10. They come in several forms, from wild symbols that carry a number to trails that climb during free spins, and the way they combine decides how big the top results can get. Here is how each type works and what it means for your budget.

Key takeaways

  • A multiplier scales a win you have already landed; on its own it pays nothing.
  • Whether a slot adds or multiplies several multipliers together makes a huge difference to the biggest wins.
  • Multipliers are paid for inside the RTP, usually through smaller regular symbol pays, so they raise volatility rather than value.
  • Ranges are set per game: never assume one slot's 2x to 100x applies to another.
  • UK rules still apply: no celebrating returns at or below the stake, and stake limits of £5 or £2 on slots.

What slot multipliers do

A multiplier takes a win and scales it. If a line pays £1.20 and a 3x multiplier applies, you receive £3.60. If nothing pays, the multiplier does nothing, which is the first thing to grasp: slot multipliers only matter on spins that already win. They are one of the oldest tools in our guide to slot features and the most common way modern games create very large results from ordinary symbol pays.

The idea isn't unique to slots. Live games such as Lightning Roulette attach random multipliers to numbers, which our glossary entry on the Lightning multiplier explains, and the general term is defined under multiplier. In slots, though, the multiplier is usually tied to a symbol, a reel or a round.

Types of slot multiplier

Studios package multipliers in a handful of ways. Knowing which one a game uses tells you where its big wins come from.

Common slot multiplier types with real examples
TypeHow it worksExample (developer specification)
Wild multiplierA wild carries a number that applies to wins it helps form2 Wild 2 Die: revolver symbols shoot multiplier wilds
Climbing or trail multiplierA multiplier rises during a feature as targets are collectedBig Bass Day at the Races: multipliers rise up to 50×
Cascade multiplierThe multiplier grows with each consecutive tumble winGonzo's Quest 2: avalanche wins grow the multiplier
Persistent spotA grid position keeps a multiplier for the rest of a roundSugar Rush Xmas: persistent multiplier spots in free spins
Random bombMultiplier symbols land at random and apply to the spin's totalSweet Bonanza Xmas: random multiplier bombs in free spins
Reel multiplierA whole reel carries a multiplierSlayers Inc: two multipliers duel to set a reel multiplier

Nolimit City has its own variants. In Mental II, the xHole feature scatters symbols to random positions with a 2x, 4x or 8x multiplier; our Mental 2 review covers the game's specification. Hacksaw's DuelReels mechanic is another, and in Bullets and Bounty, according to launch coverage of Bullets and Bounty (opens in a new tab), Outlaw DuelReels give multipliers from x2 to x100, with several in one win combining.

Added or multiplied: how multipliers stack

When more than one multiplier touches a win, the game must decide how to combine them. Some add the values together; others multiply them. The help screen says which, and it matters more than almost any other rule in a multiplier slot. Extra Juicy Megaways, for example, uses semi-sticky multipliers that add together across tumbles.

The same multipliers combined two ways, applied to a 50p win
Multipliers on the winAdded togetherPayout if addedMultiplied togetherPayout if multiplied
2x and 3x5x£2.506x£3.00
3x and 5x8x£4.0015x£7.50
2x, 3x and 5x10x£5.0030x£15.00
5x, 5x and 10x20x£10.00250x£125.00

With small numbers the gap is modest, but it grows explosively as values climb. That is why games that multiply their multipliers tend to carry very high volatility and very high max wins, while additive games feel steadier.

Slot multiplier maths: the average is what you pay for

A random multiplier has an average value, and that average is what the game's maths budgets for. The Mental II xHole range of 2x, 4x or 8x is useful for a worked example, but the game doesn't publish how often each value appears, so treat the weights below as purely illustrative.

Average value of a 2x/4x/8x multiplier under different illustrative weightings
Chance of 2xChance of 4xChance of 8xAverage multiplier
1 in 31 in 31 in 34.67x
60%30%10%3.2x
80%15%5%2.6x

The arithmetic is simple: multiply each value by its chance and add the results (for the middle row, 0.6 × 2 + 0.3 × 4 + 0.1 × 8 = 3.2). Seeing an 8x on the reel tells you very little about what the feature is worth on average; the weighting does. And whatever the weighting, the multipliers are already counted inside the RTP. To fund them, a slot normally pays less on ordinary symbol wins than it otherwise would, so the house edge is unchanged.

In pounds: a 96% RTP slot played at 50p a spin costs about 2p a spin on average whether its return comes from many small wins or from rare multiplied ones. On a £20 budget, that is the same long-run cost, but the multiplier-heavy game is far more likely to end the session early or, less often, well ahead.

Multipliers in free spins rounds

Most slots save their best multipliers for the free spins feature. The Big Bass games from Reel Kingdom are a clear example: in Christmas Big Bass Bonanza the Santa wild collects fish money values with multipliers up to 10×, and in Big Bass Keeping it Reel Fisherman wilds collect prizes and upgrade multipliers. Tanked carries multipliers over within its Carnage Spins, and Buffalo Blitz II adds wild multipliers to its free spins.

Lower-RTP versions of some of these games exist, so check the figure shown in the casino's own version.

Multipliers and max win caps

Stacked multipliers can push a result towards a slot's maximum win, and most games stop paying once that cap is reached. A 25,000x cap at 20p a spin means the most a single game round can pay is £5,000, whatever the multipliers would otherwise produce. Our answer to what a max win cap means explains how caps work, and what a slot's max win is puts the headline figures in context. Those maximums are extremely rare results, not targets.

Myths about slot multipliers

  • 'Multipliers raise the RTP.' They are part of the RTP already. A game with huge multipliers can have a lower RTP than one with none.
  • 'A big multiplier is about to land.' Outcomes are random and independent; watching for a pattern only feeds the gambler's fallacy.
  • 'Higher stakes bring better multipliers.' In standard UK slots the maths is the same at every stake unless the help screen says otherwise; see our answer on whether bigger stakes improve slot RTP.
  • 'Every 8x is worth eight times a normal win.' Only if it lands on a decent win; on a tiny win it stays tiny.

UK rules that apply to multiplier slots

Multiplier features sit inside the same rules as any other slot in Great Britain. Under the Commission's RTS 14 product design standard (opens in a new tab), a game must not celebrate a return less than or equal to your total stake, so a 2x on a win that still leaves you behind should not be dressed up with fanfare. Slot game cycles need at least 2.5 seconds, and turbo and slam stop aren't allowed. Our guide to UK game design rules has the full list.

Online slot stakes are capped at £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Multipliers raise what a win pays, not what you stake, so they don't change the limit; our slot stake limits page has the detail.

How to read a slot's multiplier rules

  1. Open the paytable and find every place a multiplier can appear: wilds, reels, trails or random symbols.
  2. Check whether several multipliers on one win are added or multiplied.
  3. See whether multipliers reset after each spin or persist through a round.
  4. Note the max win cap, as multipliers often hit it before anything else does.
  5. Compare the RTP version on offer with the developer's top figure.
  6. Choose a stake that suits a high-volatility pattern, and set a deposit limit first.

Frequently asked questions

What is a multiplier in a slot?

A multiplier is a factor applied to a win, so a 3x multiplier turns a £1 win into £3. It can sit on a wild symbol, a reel, a trail that climbs during a feature, or a random symbol that lands on the grid. It only matters on spins that already win. Our slot features guide covers how multipliers combine with other mechanics.

Do slot multipliers add or multiply together?

It depends on the game, and the help screen will say. Some slots add multipliers, so 3x and 5x make 8x; others multiply them, so the same pair makes 15x. Multiplying creates much bigger top results and higher volatility. Extra Juicy Megaways, for example, adds its semi-sticky multipliers together across tumbles. See our page on volatility for what that means in practice.

Do multipliers increase a slot's RTP?

No. The published RTP already includes everything a multiplier can pay. To fund large multipliers, a game normally pays less on ordinary symbol wins, so the average return stays the same while the results become more uneven. A slot packed with multipliers can have a lower RTP than one with none. Our RTP explained page covers how the figure is worked out.

What is the highest multiplier in a slot?

There is no single answer, because ranges are set game by game. Hacksaw's Bullets and Bounty, for example, gives DuelReel multipliers from x2 to x100, while Big Bass Day at the Races raises its multiplier up to 50× in free spins. Whatever the multiplier, the game's max win cap limits the payout. Our max win cap answer explains how that works.

Are multipliers better in free spins?

Usually they are bigger and more frequent there, because studios save their strongest features for the bonus round. That doesn't make the round better value than the game's RTP suggests; it means more of the return is concentrated in the feature, and less is paid in the base game. Our free spins feature page explains how that trade-off affects a session.

Can I predict when a multiplier will land?

No. Licensed online slots decide each outcome independently with a random number generator, so earlier spins tell you nothing about the next one. Watching for patterns or changing stakes to catch a multiplier doesn't change the odds and can lead to chasing losses. Our page on the gambler's fallacy explains why patterns mislead.

What is a wild multiplier?

A wild multiplier is a wild symbol that substitutes for other symbols and also applies a multiplier to the wins it helps form. In 2 Wild 2 Die, for example, revolver symbols shoot multiplier wilds onto the reels. If two or more multiplier wilds join one win, the game's rules decide whether their values add or multiply. Our page on wild symbols in slots covers the other wild types.

Do UK rules limit slot multipliers?

There is no UK cap on multiplier size, but the slot design rules still apply. A game must not celebrate a return at or below your stake, each slot game cycle takes at least 2.5 seconds, and stakes are capped at £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. Our UK game design rules page explains the details.
