Sakura Fortune slot overview

Sakura Fortune is one of Quickspin’s best-known games, alongside Big Bad Wolf. It uses a Japanese cherry-blossom theme and a slightly taller grid than the standard 5×3: four rows give 20 symbol positions, and 40 fixed paylines run across them. You will find it in our slot reviews hub and in the Asian-themed slots collection.

How the features work in Sakura Fortune

Everything in this game connects to one symbol: the Princess. She is the wild, standing in for other symbols to complete paylines, and she always lands as a complete stack four symbols high on reel 2, 3 or 4. A single full stack fills an entire reel, and because every payline passes through one position on each reel, a wild reel touches all 40 lines at once.

The Sakura Fortune Respin

When two full Princess stacks land on the same spin, the Sakura Fortune Respin starts. Both stacks are held in place and you get two respins at no extra cost. If another full Princess stack lands during those respins, it is held too and adds one more respin. Because there are only three reels the Princess can land on, the most the feature can hold is three full wild reels, covering reels 2, 3 and 4 together.

Free spins with expanding, sticky wilds

Three or more fan scatters, counted from the first reel, trigger the free spins. Here the Princess behaves differently: any Princess wild that appears expands to cover her whole reel, stays sticky for the rest of the round, and awards one extra free spin. So each new wild reel both improves every later spin in the round and makes the round longer. Our sticky wilds and expanding wilds guides explain each mechanic on its own.

The number of free spins awarded for three, four or five fans is set out in the paytable. It isn’t in our verified data, so check the game’s help screen; the PokerListings Sakura Fortune overview (opens in a new tab) also walks through the feature.

Sakura Fortune RTP: 96.58% against about 90%

This is the most important number on the page. Sakura Fortune’s RTP is up to 96.58%, but a version at around 90% also exists. Casinos choose which one to run, and the game looks the same in both. The difference is large: the house keeps about 3.42p of every pound in the top version and about 10p in the low one.

Expected cost on each version
Total stakedAt 96.58%At about 90%Low version costs
£40£1.37about £4.00about 2.9 times as much
£100£3.42about £10.00about 2.9 times as much
£500£17.10about £50.00about 2.9 times as much

The rule is to open the help screen and read the RTP before staking anything. If it is near 90%, the same entertainment costs nearly three times as much on average. Our page on why slots have different RTPs at different casinos explains why operators pick lower versions.

Sakura Fortune on a £20 budget

Assuming the 96.58% version, here is how £20 behaves at three stake levels. The spin count is the minimum, if nothing wins; any wins extend it.

£20 on Sakura Fortune at 96.58%
StakeMinimum spinsAverage cost per spinAverage cost per 100 spinsSame 100 spins at about 90%
10p2000.34p34pabout £1
50p401.71p£1.71about £5
£1203.42p£3.42about £10

Without a verified volatility rating, we can’t say how bumpy a session will feel, but the structure gives clues: a lot of the value sits in the respin and free spins, which depend on full stacks landing. Lower stakes give those features more chances to appear before a budget runs out. The cost per hour guide shows how the per-spin figures add up over a session.

The 40-line grid in numbers

A 5×4 grid has 20 positions. With 40 fixed lines, your stake is split across all 40 every spin: at 40p a spin, each line carries 1p. A win on any line pays that line’s share multiplied by the paytable value. Each line passes through one position on every reel, so a full wild reel sits on all 40 lines at once. Because line wins normally pay from the leftmost reel, a symbol on reel 1 still has to start the combination; a Princess reel in the middle then bridges it to the reels further right. Read our paylines guide for how line stakes work in other games.

How to play Sakura Fortune online

  1. Log in to a UK-licensed casino; age and identity checks come first, even for the demo.
  2. Open Sakura Fortune and read the help screen. Find the RTP: is it 96.58% or nearer 90%?
  3. Choose your stake. All 40 lines are always in play.
  4. Spin. Two full Princess stacks start the respin; three or more fans from reel 1 start free spins.
  5. Let any feature finish, then check your net position and time played before the next spin.

UK rules for Sakura Fortune players

Since 9 April 2025, players aged 25 and over can stake no more than £5 a spin on online slots, and since 21 May 2025 the cap for 18 to 24-year-olds is £2, as set out in GOV.UK’s announcement on the under-25 stake limit (opens in a new tab). The game must also meet the UK game design rules: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo and no slam-stop.

Feature buys aren’t offered either. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the free spins come only from fan scatters. See our feature buy rules page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Sakura Fortune?

Sakura Fortune’s RTP is up to 96.58%, but a version at around 90% also exists. The casino decides which version to run, so check the game’s help screen before you play. The difference is big: on £100 staked, the top version costs about £3.42 on average and the low one about £10. These are long-run averages, and any single session can differ widely. Our RTP explainer has more.

How does the Sakura Fortune Respin work?

The respin starts when two full four-high Princess wild stacks land on the same spin. Both stacks are held and you get two respins; each new full Princess stack that lands is also held and adds another respin. As the Princess only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4, the feature can end with all three middle reels wild. Our respins guide compares similar features in other slots.

How do you trigger free spins on Sakura Fortune?

Free spins trigger when three or more fan scatter symbols land, counted from the first reel. During the round, any Princess wild expands to fill her reel, stays sticky until the round ends and awards an extra free spin. The number of starting spins is listed in the game’s paytable rather than in our verified data. Our sticky wilds page explains why held wilds matter so much.

Who made Sakura Fortune?

Sakura Fortune was made by Quickspin, a Stockholm studio founded in the early 2010s. Playtech has owned Quickspin since May 2016, and it holds Gambling Commission account 38516. The studio has about 150 video slots, with Big Bad Wolf, Sakura Fortune and Goldilocks among the best known. Sakura Fortune came out in April 2017. See our Quickspin provider page for more of its games.

How many paylines does Sakura Fortune have?

Sakura Fortune has 40 fixed paylines on a five-reel, four-row grid. All 40 lines are active on every spin, so the stake you choose is split equally between them: at 40p a spin, each line carries 1p. Wins on separate lines are added together. Fixed lines mean you can’t reduce the cost by playing fewer lines. Our paylines page explains fixed and adjustable lines.

Is Sakura Fortune a good slot for a small budget?

It can suit a small budget at low stakes, provided you are on the top RTP version. At 10p a spin, £20 gives at least 200 spins, and on the 96.58% version the average cost is about 34p per 100 spins. On a version near 90%, the same 100 spins cost about £1 on average. Treat any budget as the cost of entertainment, not a target. Our page on budgeting for a casino session helps.

Does the Princess wild appear on every reel?

No, the Princess wild lands only on reels 2, 3 and 4, and always as a full stack four symbols high. Because each payline crosses every reel, a full Princess stack sits on all 40 lines at once. In the base game two full stacks trigger the respin; in free spins any Princess that lands expands, sticks and adds a spin. Our wild symbols guide explains how substitution completes lines.

What is the maximum stake on Sakura Fortune in the UK?

The UK maximum on Sakura Fortune, as on any online slot, is £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. Those limits came in on 9 April 2025 and 21 May 2025 respectively. The game’s own stake range may stop lower, so check the stake selector at your casino. Our slot stake limits page covers the rules in full.
