Wild symbols in slots
Wild symbols in slots substitute for other symbols to help complete a winning combination, usually for every symbol except scatters. Many games add a twist, such as wilds that expand, stick, move or carry multipliers. Here's what each type does, how much a wild changes the odds of a line, and why the published RTP already accounts for every one of them.
Key takeaways
- A standard wild replaces any symbol except scatters to complete a win; whether it replaces bonus symbols varies by game.
- Wilds make wins more likely on each spin, but the paytable is set so the game still returns its published RTP.
- Multiplier wilds can add or multiply together, and the difference matters: 3× and 2× give 5× one way and 6× the other.
- The RTP version a casino runs affects your cost far more than the type of wild.

What wild symbols do in slots
A standard wild replaces all symbols except scatters to help form a winning combination, as this guide to slot features (opens in a new tab) explains. If you have two cherries on a line and a wild in the third position, the game treats the wild as a third cherry and pays the three-cherry prize.
The exceptions are where games differ. Wilds almost never stand in for scatter symbols, and whether they can replace a bonus or feature symbol depends entirely on the game's rules. Some wilds also pay as a symbol in their own right when several land together. The help screen is the only reliable guide.
Wilds work with every win system. On a payline slot a wild fills a gap in a line; in a ways to win game it counts as an extra copy on its reel, multiplying the number of winning ways; in a cluster pays game it can join two groups into one. Our slot features hub covers the other mechanics.
How a wild completes a win: step by step
- The reels stop and the game finds every wild on the grid.
- For each line, way or cluster, it tests whether a wild can stand in for a symbol to complete a win.
- Where a wild could complete more than one combination, games normally pay the highest available win on that line; check the help screen to confirm.
- Any multiplier on the wild is applied to the win it helped create.
- All wins from the spin are added together and paid.
Wild symbols maths: how much a wild helps
A short calculation shows the effect. Take a made-up game where a given symbol fills any reel position with a chance of 1 in 10, and add a wild with a chance of 1 in 20. A position now counts as that symbol with a chance of 1/10 + 1/20 = 3/20. The odds of a run starting from reel 1 on one line change like this:
| Run | Without wild | With wild | How much more likely |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 of a kind | 1 in 1,000 | about 1 in 296 | 3.4 times |
| 4 of a kind | 1 in 10,000 | about 1 in 1,975 | 5.1 times |
| 5 of a kind | 1 in 100,000 | about 1 in 13,169 | 7.6 times |
The longer the run, the bigger the boost, because the wild's help compounds across every reel. But nothing here makes the game cheaper. The developer knows exactly how often wilds land and sets the paytable so the game returns its published RTP. Without wilds, the same game would simply pay more per combination.
Types of wild symbols in slots
Most games build on the basic wild with a behaviour of their own. The descriptions below are general; each game's rules decide exactly how its wild works.
| Type | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Expanding wild | Grows to cover a whole reel | Fist of Destruction (free spins); Trillionaire Megaways with multipliers |
| Sticky wild | Stays in place for later spins | Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded; Stormforged |
| Jumping or moving wild | Moves to a new position each spin | El Paso Gunfight; San Quentin 2: Death Row |
| Multiplier wild | Multiplies any win it completes | 2 Wild 2 Die; Gold Blitz Extreme |
| Collecting wild | Collects cash values from other symbols | Big Bass Day at the Races Punter wilds, multipliers up to 50× |
| Giant wild | Covers a block of positions | Starburst Galaxy: a 3 × 3 Starburst wild |
| Spreading wild | Extends across rows | Beam Boys: Laser Cat wilds |
Our separate guides to expanding wilds and sticky wilds go into those two types in more detail.
Nudging wilds and whole-reel wilds
Nolimit City's xNudge wild nudges to fill the whole reel when it lands partly visible, and each cell it moves adds one to its multiplier, according to this summary of Nolimit City's x-mechanics (opens in a new tab). In Mental II, xNudge wild multipliers combine into a total, and an xSplit symbol striking an xNudge wild raises its multiplier by one, as this studio showcase of Mental II (opens in a new tab) describes. See our Mental 2 review and our page on xWays and xNudge.
Hacksaw Gaming takes another route. In Bullets and Bounty, reels expanded by DuelReels act as wilds, according to this Bullets and Bounty launch report (opens in a new tab). Our DuelReels guide explains how the duel multipliers are set.
Multiplier wilds: adding or multiplying?
When two multiplier wilds help the same win, games combine them in one of two ways, and the help screen will say which. The gap grows quickly as multipliers rise.
| Wild multipliers | Added together | Multiplied together |
|---|---|---|
| 2× and 2× | 4× = 40p | 4× = 40p |
| 3× and 2× | 5× = 50p | 6× = 60p |
| 5× and 3× | 8× = 80p | 15× = £1.50 |
| 10× and 5× | 15× = £1.50 | 50× = £5 |
Games that multiply wild multipliers together tend to be more volatile, because more of their return comes from rare stacks of high multipliers. Our guide to slot multipliers has more examples, and our multiplier glossary entry gives the short definition.

What wild symbol slots cost: RTP versions matter more
A clever wild doesn't change the price of play; the RTP does. The average cost is the total staked multiplied by the house edge, 100% minus the RTP. 2 Wild 2 Die is published in four versions, which makes the point clearly.
| RTP version | House edge | Average cost per £20 staked |
|---|---|---|
| 96.25% | 3.75% | 75p |
| 94.15% | 5.85% | about £1.17 |
| 92.14% | 7.86% | about £1.57 |
| 88.25% | 11.75% | £2.35 |
The same game, with identical wilds, can cost more than three times as much per pound depending on the version. Our explainer on why slots have different RTPs at different casinos covers how to check.
Wild symbol myths
- Myth: a wild landing just off a line means one is coming. Each spin is independent; a near-miss changes nothing about the next result.
- Myth: sticky wilds mean you should keep spinning. Sticky wilds work within a feature's own rules; they aren't a reason to stake more or play longer.
- Myth: wilds always replace bonus symbols. Many games exclude scatters and some bonus symbols; check the help screen.
More of these beliefs are covered in our guide to slot machine myths.
UK rules for slots with wild features
Wild features don't change the UK rules that apply to every online slot. The stake limit is £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, and features within the spin don't add to it; see our slot stake limits page. Spins must take at least 2.5 seconds, and autoplay, turbo and slam-stop are banned.
Games also can't celebrate a return less than or equal to the stake, so a wild that completes a 5p win on a 20p spin shouldn't trigger a fanfare. And since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so wild-packed bonus rounds have to be reached through normal play. Our pages on UK game design rules and feature buy rules have more.

Frequently asked questions
What does a wild symbol do in a slot?
A wild symbol substitutes for other symbols to help complete a winning combination. A standard wild replaces every symbol except scatters, and whether it can stand in for bonus symbols depends on the game. Some wilds also pay on their own or carry multipliers. Our slot features hub explains how wilds fit with other mechanics.
Can a wild replace a scatter symbol?
Usually not. A standard wild replaces all symbols except scatters, because scatters normally trigger features or pay wherever they land. Some games also stop wilds replacing other bonus symbols. A few games may have special rules, so check the paytable or help screen. What scatters do instead is set out in our guide to scatter symbols.
What is an expanding wild?
An expanding wild is a wild that grows to cover a whole reel, turning every position on that reel wild for the spin. That can complete several line or ways wins at once. Fist of Destruction uses expanding wilds in its free spins, and Trillionaire Megaways adds multipliers to them. Each game's rules decide when the expansion happens.
What is a sticky wild?
A sticky wild stays in its position for later spins, usually during a free spins round, so it can help complete wins more than once. In Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded, Berzerk Vikings turn into sticky wilds in free spins. How long they stay is set by each game. Our guide to sticky wilds covers the type in detail.
Do wild symbols increase your chances of winning?
Wilds make a win more likely on each spin, but they don't improve the game's overall odds. The developer sets the paytable knowing how often wilds land, so the game still returns its published RTP. Without wilds, the same game would pay more per combination. The figure that tells you the cost of play is the RTP.
How do multiplier wilds combine?
Multiplier wilds either add or multiply together, depending on the game. With a 3× and a 2× wild on the same win, adding gives 5× while multiplying gives 6×; with 10× and 5×, the gap is 15× against 50×. The help screen states which rule applies. Our guide to slot multipliers has more worked examples.
What is an xNudge wild?
An xNudge wild is a Nolimit City mechanic: when the wild lands partly visible, it nudges to fill the whole reel, and each cell it moves adds one to its multiplier. In Mental II, xNudge multipliers combine into a total. It appears in several Nolimit City games. Our page on xWays and xNudge explains the studio's other mechanics.
Can you buy wild features on UK slots?
No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so wild-heavy bonus rounds can only be reached through normal play. The Commission said such features risked breaching its standards on game rules and chasing losses. The background is on our UK feature buy rules page.
