Stake: meaning in casino games

A stake is the amount of money you risk on a single bet, spin or hand: £1 on red, 20p a spin on a slot, £10 on a blackjack hand. Your stake decides both what you can win and what the game costs you on average, and in Great Britain online slots carry a legal maximum stake of £5, or £2 for players aged 18 to 24.

Key takeaways

  • Your stake is what you risk on one bet; your expected loss is stake × house edge.
  • Payouts quoted ‘to 1’ return your stake on top: a £10 bet at 35 to 1 gives back £360.
  • UK online slots cap the stake at £5 per game cycle (25 and over) or £2 (18 to 24).
  • No statutory stake limit applies to online roulette, blackjack or other table and live games.

What stake means in casino games

Stake, bet and wager are often used interchangeably, but stake has a precise sense: it is the sum you put at risk on one decision. On a slot that is the total cost of a spin across all lines. In roulette it is the chip on each bet, so £2 on red and £1 on 17 is a total stake of £3 on that spin. In blackjack it can grow during a hand when you double or split. It is a core entry in our casino glossary.

Casinos set a minimum bet and a maximum for each game, and bonuses can set their own cap. The law adds one more ceiling, on online slots only, explained below.

How your stake links to payouts

Casino payouts are almost always quoted ‘to 1’, meaning winnings per unit staked with the stake returned as well. A £10 straight-up roulette win at 35 to 1 pays £350 in winnings and hands back your £10, so £360 lands in your balance. Slots usually quote wins as a multiple of the total stake, so a 50x win on a 20p spin is £10. The baccarat and craps rows below use the edges published by Wizard of Odds for baccarat (opens in a new tab) and craps.

The last column is the one to watch. Expected loss is stake × house edge, and it adds up across every bet you make. A session of 500 spins at £1 on a 96% RTP slot stakes £500 and has an expected loss of £20, though the actual result can be far above or below that.

UK online slot stake limits

Since 9 April 2025, adults aged 25 and over can stake no more than £5 per game cycle on an online slot in Great Britain. Since 21 May 2025, the cap for players aged 18 to 24 is £2. The Gambling Commission’s stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) defines a game cycle as running from the start of a game until all money staked is lost or all winnings are made available, so features inside one spin count as part of it.

The guidance gives worked cases. A 27-year-old who stakes £2 may be offered up to £3 more within the same game cycle; a 19-year-old who stakes £2 can be offered nothing extra until the cycle ends. Stakes and bonus rules

Bonuses often add a maximum stake while they are active. Casumo’s welcome bonus, for example, caps bets at £5 while the bonus is live, and breaking a max-bet rule can put bonus winnings at risk; see what happens if you break the max bet rule. Free spins come with a fixed stake set by the offer: 100 spins at 10p each are £10 of stakes played for you, and the value of free spins depends on that figure and the game’s RTP.

How to choose a stake for a session

  1. Set a session budget you can afford to lose, before you open any game.
  2. Divide the budget by the number of bets or spins you want: £50 at 20p gives 250 spins.
  3. Work out the expected cost: number of bets × stake × house edge.
  4. Pick the stake that leaves the cost comfortable and the number of bets long enough.
  5. Keep the stake fixed; raising it to chase losses only increases the expected cost.
  • Unit: a standard stake size used to plan a session.
  • Bankroll: the total money set aside for gambling.
  • Max bet: the highest stake a game or bonus allows.
  • Game cycle: the unit the UK slot stake limit applies to.

Frequently asked questions

What does stake mean in gambling?

Stake means the amount of money you put at risk on one bet, spin or hand. If you bet £5 on black, your stake is £5; if you lose, you lose that £5, and if you win at even money you get £10 back. Your stake also sets your average cost, because expected loss equals stake times the house edge. Our expected value guide shows the calculation in full.

What is the maximum stake on online slots in the UK?

The maximum stake on an online slot in Great Britain is £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over, and £2 for players aged 18 to 24. The £5 limit took effect on 9 April 2025 and the £2 limit on 21 May 2025. They apply to online slots only, not roulette, blackjack or live tables. See our UK slot stake limits page for details.

Is there a stake limit on online roulette or blackjack?

No, there is no statutory stake limit on online roulette, blackjack or other table and live games in Great Britain. The £5 and £2 caps apply only to online slots. Each casino sets its own table minimums and maximums, shown in the game’s information panel. Our answer on why casinos limit stakes on some games explains the reasons behind table maximums.

Does a higher stake improve slot RTP?

Usually not: on most slots the RTP is the same whatever you stake, so a bigger stake simply raises the amount you lose on average. At a 96% RTP, £1 spins cost about 4p each on average and £5 spins about 20p. Some games list exceptions in their help screen, so check there. Our answer on whether bigger stakes improve slot RTP covers this.

Is your stake returned when you win?

Yes, at casino tables your stake comes back with your winnings, because payouts are quoted ‘to 1’. A £10 even-money win returns £20: your £10 stake plus £10 winnings. Odds quoted ‘for 1’ include the stake in the figure, so 2 for 1 means £20 back on £10. Slot wins are shown as total amounts paid. Our true odds vs payouts page explains both formats.

How much should I stake per spin?

Stake an amount that lets your session budget last as long as you want while keeping the expected cost comfortable. For example, £40 at 20p gives 200 spins; on a 96% RTP slot that is £40 staked with an expected loss of £1.60, though results vary widely. Never raise stakes to win back losses. Our guide to making a budget last has more worked examples.
