Minimum bet: meaning and real cost

A minimum bet is the smallest stake a casino game will accept for a round, shown on the table’s limits panel or the slot’s stake selector. In many table games the minimum covers only the first bet, so the amount you actually commit in a round can be two, three or four times higher once raises, doubles and fees are added.

Key takeaways

  • The minimum bet is set by each game or table; UK law sets no minimum stake.
  • In poker-style games, the ante minimum is only part of the round: Ultimate Texas Hold'em averages 4.15 times the ante.
  • Doubling, splitting, side bets and Lightning fees all raise the real stake above the minimum.
  • Size your budget in units of the full round cost, not the advertised minimum.

What minimum bet means

Every casino game has a stake range, its table limit, running from the minimum bet to the max bet. In a land-based casino the range is on a sign at the table; online it sits in a limits panel or the game’s help screen. Players who stick to the bottom of that range are often called low rollers, and the term sits in our casino glossary next to ante and unit.

There is no legal minimum stake in Great Britain. Each developer and casino chooses its own, and live tables in particular tend to vary. Wikipedia’s online casino article (opens in a new tab) notes that live dealer games cost operators much more to host than virtual games, which helps explain why live minimums are often higher than RNG ones.

The minimum bet against what you really stake

In roulette and baccarat the minimum is the whole bet. In games with decisions or follow-up wagers, it is only the entry ticket. Wizard of Odds’ Ultimate Texas Hold'em analysis (opens in a new tab) gives an average total wager of 4.15 times the Ante with optimal strategy, because you post an equal Blind and can then raise.

Ultimate Texas Hold'emAnte + equal Blind, then a Play bet of 1x to 4x£6Average total about £4.15
Casino Hold'emAnte, then a Call of 2x the Ante£3Optimal play calls about 82% of the time
Three Card PokerAnte, then a Play bet equal to the Ante£2Folding loses the Ante

BlackjackInitial bet, plus extra for doubles and splits£2 or moreUp to four hands where re-splitting is allowed
Lightning BlackjackInitial bet + 100% Lightning fee£2 before doublesFee listed on Evolution’s live blackjack page

In Casino Hold'em, a player who calls 82% of the time stakes on average £1 + (0.82 × £2) = £2.64 per £1 Ante. Wizard of Odds’ Casino Hold'em page (opens in a new tab) gives the call rate. The Lightning fee figure is from Evolution’s live blackjack page (opens in a new tab).

Sizing a budget around the minimum bet

A bankroll is easier to manage when counted in rounds. The table below divides a £50 session budget by the real cost of a round at different minimums.

Rounds covered by a £50 budget (shown arithmetic)
Minimum betRoulette or baccarat (1x)Casino Hold'em (about 2.64x)Ultimate Texas Hold'em (about 4.15x)

£150 roundsAbout 19 roundsAbout 12 rounds
£510 roundsAbout 4 roundsAbout 2 rounds
  1. Find the game’s minimum in the limits panel or help screen.
  2. Work out the average or full stake per round, including raises, fees and any side bet.
  3. Divide your budget by that figure to see how many rounds you can afford.
  4. If the answer is under about 20 rounds, choose a lower-minimum table or a simpler game.

Our bankroll management guide expands on choosing a stake that fits a budget.

Where you see minimum bets

Higher minimums do not mean better odds. A £25 minimum single-zero table has the same 2.70% edge as a 20p one.

UK rules around minimum bets

No UK rule sets a minimum stake, but several affect how quickly minimum bets add up. Casino games other than slots must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, and online slots at least 2.5 seconds per spin, as our page on game speed rules explains. Autoplay is banned, and net spend and time spent must be shown in real time. Minimum deposits are a separate matter, covered in our minimum deposit guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is a minimum bet in a casino?

A minimum bet is the smallest stake a game accepts for one round, set by the game or the casino rather than by law. It appears on the table’s limits sign or panel alongside the maximum. In some games it applies only to the first bet of the round, so the total you commit can be higher. Our table limit entry explains the full range.

Is there a legal minimum bet in the UK?

No, UK law sets no minimum stake for casino games. The legal limits are maximums, such as £5 a spin on online slots for adults aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds. Each game chooses its own minimum, and live tables often vary more than RNG games. Our max bet entry covers the legal caps.

Why is the minimum bet higher at live tables?

Live tables are more expensive to run, with dealers, studios and cameras, so operators often set higher minimums than on RNG versions. Limits can differ from table to table, so check before joining. The higher minimum does not change the house edge. Our guide to live casino limits shows how ranges differ between games.

Does a higher minimum bet mean better odds?

No, the house edge depends on the rules, not on the stake level. A single-zero roulette table costs 2.70% at any minimum, and a blackjack table’s edge comes from its rules, such as the blackjack payout and soft 17. A higher minimum only means more money at risk each round. Our house edge guide explains where the percentage comes from.

How much do I need for a £1 minimum Ultimate Texas Hold'em table?

Plan on around £4.15 per round on average, not £1. You must post a Blind equal to the Ante, and optimal play leads to an average total wager of 4.15 times the Ante, with a maximum of £6 when you raise 4x before the flop. A £50 budget therefore covers about 12 rounds on average. Our Ultimate Texas Hold'em guide explains each betting stage.

Do side bets add to the minimum bet?

Yes, a side bet is a separate stake placed on top of the main bet, so it raises your real stake per round. Side bets also tend to carry higher house edges than the main game, which makes them an expensive way to play at the minimum. Check the help screen for each bet’s limits. Our page asking are casino side bets worth it compares the costs.
