Wager: meaning and wagering
A wager is a bet: an amount of money you stake on an outcome you can't predict, which you lose if it goes against you and which pays out at set odds if it wins. At UK online casinos the word turns up most in wagering requirements, the amount of play needed before bonus money can be withdrawn, now capped at 10 times the bonus.
Key takeaways
- A wager is the same thing as a bet or stake; to wager is to place one.
- Total amount wagered (turnover) drives your expected loss: turnover × house edge.
- Bonus wagering requirements in Great Britain can't exceed 10x the bonus since 19 January 2026.
- Every pound wagered to clear a bonus still carries the game's house edge.
- Meaning
- A bet: money staked on an uncertain result
- Expected loss
- Amount wagered × house edge
- UK bonus wagering cap
- 10x the bonus (from 19 January 2026)
- Example: £50 bonus at 10x
- £500 to be wagered
- Slot stake limit
- £5 (25+) or £2 (18 to 24)
Wager meaning: a bet by another name
In everyday casino language a wager, a bet and a stake mean the same thing. As a verb, to wager is to put money on an outcome: "she wagered £5 on red". The word is a little more formal, which is why it appears in terms and conditions, game rules and laws more often than on the casino floor.
Every wager has three parts: the amount staked, the event it rides on and the payout if it wins. A £5 wager on red at single-zero roulette wins with 18 of the 37 pockets and pays even money, so you either lose £5 or collect £10 (your £5 back plus £5).
How the total amount wagered sets your cost
Casinos and regulators often talk about the total amount wagered, also called turnover. It is every stake added up, including winnings you bet again. Turnover matters because expected loss = amount wagered × house edge. The edge is a long-run average, so any one session can be far better or worse.
| Game and play | Amount wagered | House edge | Expected loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slot, 50p spins, 300 spins, 96% RTP | £150 | 4% | £6.00 |
| Roulette, £5 on red, 30 spins, single zero | £150 | 2.70% | about £4.05 |
| Baccarat Banker, £5, 30 hands | £150 | 1.06% | about £1.59 |
| Slot, £1 spins, 500 spins, 96% RTP | £500 | 4% | £20.00 |
Notice that the budget never changes, but the amount wagered does, because winnings get staked again. A small deposit can turn into a large turnover, which is why our theoretical loss guide measures cost from the amount wagered rather than the deposit.
Wagering requirements: wagering a bonus
A wagering requirement says how many times you must bet bonus money before it, and anything won with it, can be withdrawn. Under the Gambling Commission's LCCP social responsibility code 5.1.1 (opens in a new tab), bonus wagering in Great Britain can't be more than 10 times the bonus from 19 January 2026. In its announcement of safer and simpler promotions (opens in a new tab), the Commission's example of the old problem was a £10 bonus with 50x wagering, which needed £500 of play.
- Find the bonus amount, not the deposit: a 50% match on £100 is a £50 bonus.
- Multiply by the requirement: £50 × 10 = £500 to be wagered.
- Check which games count and at what rate: table and live games are often excluded or count for less.
- Check the time limit and the maximum bet while the bonus is active.
- Estimate the cost: £500 wagered on a 96% RTP slot has an expected loss of £20.
The cap also means a casino can't make an offer bigger or change it because you reach the qualifying spend faster than the offer period. Our 10x wagering cap page covers the rule in full, and the wagering calculator does the sums.
UK limits on how much you can wager
Online slots have a maximum wager per spin of £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. These limits apply to slots only, not to table or live games, which follow each table's own betting limit. Bonus terms often add a lower cap, such as a £5 maximum bet while the bonus is live; breaking it can void the bonus, as our max bet rule page explains.
You can also cap your own wagering. Deposit limits, reality checks and time-outs are offered by every UK-licensed casino; see our deposit limits guide.

Frequently asked questions
What does wager mean in a casino?
Wager means a bet, or the act of placing one. If you put £2 on a blackjack hand, your wager is £2. The word also appears in wagering requirements, which set how much you must bet before bonus funds can be withdrawn. Whatever the context, the house edge applies to each wager, so losses are likely over time. Our casino maths hub explains how that edge is worked out.
Is a wager the same as a stake?
Yes, in practice the two words mean the same: the money you put on a bet. Some people use stake for the amount on a single bet and wager for betting in general, but casino terms treat them as interchangeable. A slot's stake per spin, for example, is your wager on that spin. See our stake definition for how stakes are set on slots and tables.
What does 10x wagering mean?
It means you must bet ten times the bonus amount before the bonus and its winnings become withdrawable. A £25 bonus at 10x needs £250 of eligible bets. Since 19 January 2026 UK casinos can't set bonus wagering above 10 times the bonus. Games may count at different rates, and time limits apply. Our wagering requirements guide shows worked examples.
Do free spins winnings have to be wagered?
Not always: it depends on the offer. Some free spins pay winnings as cash with no wagering, while others add winnings as bonus money that must be wagered, up to the 10x cap. Check the terms for the words no wagering, and for any limit on what free spin winnings can be worth. Our answer on whether free spins have wagering covers the details.
How much does wagering a bonus cost on average?
Multiply the amount you must wager by the game's house edge. Wagering £500 on a slot with a 96% RTP has an expected cost of £500 × 4% = £20, which you set against the bonus value. Results vary widely in practice, and you could lose more or less. The bonus value guide shows how to compare offers this way before you opt in.
Can I wager a bonus on blackjack or roulette?
Often not, or only at a reduced rate. Many casinos exclude table and live games from bonus wagering or count them at a small percentage, and some offers must be wagered on slots only. Always read the game restrictions before you play. Our answer on whether you can play blackjack with a bonus explains why table games are treated differently.
