Minimum bet on online roulette

What is the minimum bet on online roulette? There is no single answer, because UK law sets no minimum: each game and table sets its own limits, shown in the game's limits or help panel. As one example, a UK operator's listing for First Person XXXtreme Lightning Roulette gives a 20p minimum stake, while live tables often start higher.

Key takeaways

  • No UK law sets a minimum roulette bet; each game's table limits decide it.
  • Find the limits in the game's limits or help panel before you place a chip.
  • Low stakes don't change the odds: single-zero roulette still costs 2.70% of every bet.
  • Game speed matters as much as stake size for what an hour costs.
  • UK slot stake caps don't apply to roulette, but a bonus can set its own maximum bet.

What is the minimum bet on online roulette?

The minimum bet on online roulette is whatever the particular game says it is. Studios and casinos set table limits for each roulette game, so two tables in the same lobby can have different minimums. Neither the Gambling Act nor the Commission's rules set a minimum stake for roulette, and the online stake caps that do exist apply only to slots.

Published figures are scarce, so treat any number you read as specific to one game at one casino. One UK operator's game page lists a 20p minimum for First Person XXXtreme Lightning Roulette (an RNG game). Evolution, meanwhile, says its American Roulette (opens in a new tab) has lower betting limits than its other roulette games, without printing them. Always check the limits panel of the table you're actually at. Our roulette hub and questions section have more on the basics.

What decides the minimum stake at an online roulette table

  • RNG or live: a live table needs a studio, wheel and staff for every round, which costs operators far more than a virtual game, so live minimums tend to sit above RNG ones.
  • The casino's settings: the same studio game can be configured with different limits for different casinos, and some studios run separate standard and VIP tables.
  • Bet type: many games show separate limits for inside bets (single numbers, splits) and outside bets (red or black, dozens), so read both.
  • Variant: multiplier games such as XXXtreme Lightning Roulette and novelty formats such as mini roulette set their own limits.

The reason casinos set minimums at all is cost: each round has to cover its running costs. Our question why do casinos limit stakes on some games looks at the other side, the maximums.

How to find the minimum bet in an online roulette game

  1. Open the game from the casino lobby; some lobbies show the stake range on the game tile.
  2. Look for a limits, info or i button near the betting layout.
  3. Note the minimum and maximum for inside bets and for outside bets separately.
  4. Check the smallest chip value available in the chip tray.
  5. Read the help screen for the RTP and any table rules, such as La Partage.
  6. If no limits panel is visible, ask the casino's support team before you play.

Online roulette minimum bets: what low stakes really cost

A small stake doesn't change the odds. On a single-zero wheel every bet carries a 2.70% house edge, so the average cost of a spin is stake × 0.027. Low stakes make your budget last longer; they don't make the game cheaper per pound. The table shows how a £20 budget stretches at different stakes, before counting any wins.

A £20 roulette budget at different stakes (single zero, 2.70% edge)
Stake per spinSpins from £20Average cost per spinAverage cost of 100 spins
10p2000.27p27p
20p1000.54p54p
50p401.35p£1.35
£1202.7p£2.70
£5413.5p£13.50

Results swing far more than these averages suggest, especially with inside bets: a 20p straight-up wins only once in 37 spins on average but returns £7.20 when it does. Our session budget calculator and the question how long will £50 last at roulette help you plan.

Why game speed matters as much as the minimum bet

Since 17 January 2025, online casino games other than slots must allow at least 5 seconds per game cycle, as the Commission set out in its new rules on safety and consumer choice (opens in a new tab). That caps an RNG roulette game at 720 rounds an hour. Live games are slower: Evolution's Speed Roulette takes about 25 seconds a round (144 an hour), and its Auto Roulette 60 to 80 games an hour.

Maximum average cost per hour on single zero (2.70%) by speed and stake
Format and paceRounds per hourAt 20pAt £1
RNG at the 5-second minimum720£3.89£19.44
Live speed roulette, 25-second rounds14478p£3.89
Auto roulette, upper end8043p£2.16

The striking result: 20p a spin at full RNG speed costs about the same per hour as £1 a spin at a 25-second live table. A low minimum doesn't automatically mean a cheap hour. Our cost per hour page and the game speed rules explain the details, and speed roulette covers the quicker live format.

Is there a maximum bet on online roulette in the UK?

There's no legal cap on roulette stakes. The Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets £5 a spin for adults aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, but it applies only to online slots, not to roulette, blackjack or live games. Each table has its own maximum, and a bonus can impose one too: Casumo's welcome bonus, for example, caps bets at £5 while the bonus is active. See the maximum stake on a UK slot and our max bet glossary entry.

Minimum deposits for playing low-stakes roulette

A low table minimum is only useful if the casino accepts a small deposit. Among our partners, Casumo states a £10 minimum deposit for all payment methods. Coral and Ladbrokes publish a £5 minimum for Google Pay and Pay by Bank, and show other minimums in the cashier. 10bet doesn't publish a general figure. More detail is in what is the minimum deposit at a UK casino.

Before your first deposit, UK casinos must prompt you to set a financial limit. Setting a deposit limit that matches your session budget is the simplest way to keep low-stakes play low-stakes.

Minimum bet myths at online roulette

Advantages

  • Fact: odds and edge are identical at the minimum and maximum stake.
  • Fact: more spins at a low stake can cost as much as fewer spins at a high one.
  • Fact: table limits are set per game, so check each one.

Drawbacks

  • Myth: small bets get worse odds than big ones.
  • Myth: starting at the minimum and doubling after losses is a safe plan.
  • Myth: the minimum bet is the same at every casino.

The doubling idea is the Martingale, and table maximums are one of the reasons it fails: from a 20p start, eight straight losses need a £51.20 ninth bet, and the edge is unchanged throughout. See our Martingale page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play online roulette for 10p a spin?

Sometimes, depending on the game. Some RNG roulette games allow very small chips, but each game sets its own limits and there is no UK-wide minimum, so the only reliable answer is the limits panel of the game you open. Even at 10p, a single-zero game costs 2.70% of each stake on average. See our minimum bet glossary entry and the betting limit definition.

What is the minimum bet on live roulette?

It varies by table and casino, and live minimums are often higher than RNG ones, partly because each round needs a studio and staff. Evolution says its American Roulette has lower betting limits than its other roulette games, but it doesn't publish the figures. Check the limits button on the live table before betting. Our guide to live casino limits and the live roulette page explain the formats.

Is there a legal minimum bet for roulette in the UK?

No. UK law and the Commission's rules don't set a minimum stake for online roulette. Operators and studios choose their own table limits. The rules that do touch stakes are the online slot caps of £5 and £2, which don't apply to roulette, and bonus terms, which may set a maximum bet while bonus funds are active. Read our UK rules hub and the slot stake limits page.

Does a smaller bet give worse roulette odds?

No. The chance of each bet winning comes from the pockets on the wheel, and the payouts don't change with stake size. A 10p straight-up and a £10 straight-up both win 1 time in 37 on a single-zero wheel and both pay 35 to 1. The house edge is 2.70% either way. Only the pound amounts differ. See our roulette odds and roulette payouts pages.

How long will £10 last at minimum stakes?

At 10p a spin, £10 covers 100 spins before any winnings; at 20p, 50 spins. On average a single-zero game would cost about 27p over those 100 spins at 10p, but real results swing widely, so the money may run out sooner or last much longer. Speed matters too: fast RNG games burn through spins quickly. Try the session budget calculator or read how much should I budget for a casino session.

Is RNG roulette cheaper than live roulette?

Per pound staked, no: single-zero RNG and live games both have a 2.70% edge. RNG games may allow smaller stakes, but they can also run much faster, up to 720 rounds an hour at the 5-second minimum. At that pace, 20p a spin costs about £3.89 an hour on average, the same as £1 a spin at a 25-second live table. Compare formats on RNG against live roulette and cost per hour.

What is the minimum bet on Lightning Roulette?

It depends on the casino and the version. One UK operator lists a 20p minimum for the RNG First Person XXXtreme Lightning Roulette, but live Lightning Roulette limits are set per casino and table. Remember that plain straight-up wins pay 29 to 1 in Lightning Roulette rather than 35 to 1, with operator pages listing an RTP of 97.10% to 97.30%. See our Lightning Roulette guide and is Lightning Roulette worth playing.

Can I use a bonus to play minimum-stake roulette?

Usually not to clear the wagering. Bonus terms often exclude roulette or count it for only part of each stake, and our partners' offers are slot-led: Coral's spins are slot spins and 10bet's bonus must be wagered on slots. You can still play roulette with your own deposited money. Check the terms first. The questions can I use a bonus on live casino and our roulette bonus guide explain more.
