XXXtreme Lightning Roulette explained
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is Evolution’s higher-volatility follow-up to Lightning Roulette, with up to ten lightning spots per round and multipliers that can reach 2,000x on a straight-up bet. It adds two features, Chain Lightning and Double Strikes, that spread the game’s return into rarer, larger payouts.
Key takeaways
- Each round strikes one to five Lightning Numbers at 50x to 500x, and Chain Lightning can add up to nine more, to a maximum of ten spots.
- Double Strikes lift a multiplier to between 600x and 2,000x, the game’s ceiling.
- Only straight-up bets on struck numbers can win a multiplier.
- The only published RTP is 97.30%, from a UK operator page for the RNG First Person version.

What XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is
Evolution announced XXXtreme Lightning Roulette on 25 May 2022 as the newest member of its Lightning family. It keeps the idea that made Lightning Roulette popular, random multipliers on single numbers, and pushes it further in two directions: more numbers can be struck in one round, and the top multiplier is four times higher.
It is still roulette underneath. Bets go on the usual layout, and a single winning pocket decides every bet, so the basic chances you can read about on our roulette odds page apply. What changes is how the payout for a winning single number is worked out. For the rest of the Evolution range, start at our main roulette hub.
Chain Lightning and Double Strikes: what XXXtreme adds
Evolution’s XXXtreme Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab) describes three layers of multiplier. Each one is applied to straight-up bets only.
| Feature | What it does | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Numbers | One to five numbers are struck each round with random multipliers | 50x to 500x |
| Chain Lightning | Adds extra lucky bet spots to the round | Up to 9 more, 10 spots in total |
| Double Strikes | Raises a multiplier into a higher band | 600x to 2,000x |
Chain Lightning is about breadth: it raises the number of pockets that carry a multiplier, from a maximum of five in standard Lightning to a maximum of ten here. Double Strikes are about height: they take a multiplier out of the 50x to 500x band and into 600x to 2,000x. Evolution doesn’t publish how often either feature triggers, so their frequency can’t be quoted. Check the game’s help screen for the precise trigger rules.
A multiplied payout needs a straight-up bet on a Lightning or Chain Lightning Number. A split or corner that includes a struck number is paid without any multiplier.
How to play XXXtreme Lightning Roulette
- Open the game’s help screen and read the paytable, including the payout for a straight-up that isn’t struck.
- Set a session budget and choose a chip size that fits it; the RNG version listed by one UK operator starts at 20p.
- Place your bets while the betting timer runs. Only straight-up chips can collect a multiplier.
- When betting closes, watch for Lightning Numbers, any Chain Lightning spots and any Double Strike upgrades.
- The ball settles. Winning straight-ups on struck spots are paid at their multiplier; all other winning bets follow the paytable.
- Everything resets for the next round. Use the re-bet button if you want to repeat a layout, since autoplay isn’t allowed in the UK.
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette payouts: what’s published
The public pages are clear about the multipliers but leave some paytable details to the in-game rules. Here’s where the published information stops:
| Detail | Status | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Number count and multipliers | Published: 1 to 5, 50x to 500x | Evolution game page |
| Chain Lightning limit | Published: up to 9 extra, 10 total | Evolution game page |
| Double Strike band | Published: 600x to 2,000x | Evolution game page |
| Payout for an unstruck straight-up | Not on the public pages | In-game help screen |
| How often features trigger | Not published | Not available |
| Live game RTP | Not on Evolution’s pages | In-game help screen |
The unstruck straight-up payout matters more than it looks. In standard Lightning Roulette it’s 29 to 1 instead of the usual 35 to 1, and that cut is what pays for the multipliers. Before betting single numbers in XXXtreme, find the equivalent figure in the help screen and compare it with the standard straight-up payout.
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette odds with up to ten spots
Assuming a 37-pocket single-zero layout, as in standard Lightning, one straight-up bet wins 1 time in 37. For a multiplied win, your number also has to be one of the struck spots. Because the strikes are drawn separately from the ball, the two chances multiply.
| Spots struck this round | Chance your number is struck | Chance it is struck and wins | About 1 in |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1/37 | 1/1,369 | 1,369 |
| 3 | 3/37 | 3/1,369 | 456 |
| 5 | 5/37 | 5/1,369 | 274 |
| 7 | 7/37 | 7/1,369 | 196 |
| 10 (the maximum) | 10/37 | 10/1,369 | 137 |
Ten-spot rounds need Chain Lightning, and its frequency isn’t published, so you can’t average these into one figure. Double Strikes are rarer still, sitting on top of the chance of a struck win. A 2,000x payout is a very long shot by any reading of the numbers. Our probability basics page explains how chances like these are combined.
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette RTP and house edge
The one published RTP comes from Betfair Casino’s First Person XXXtreme Lightning Roulette page (opens in a new tab), which lists 97.30% and a minimum stake of 0.20. That page covers the RNG version, not the live studio game. Evolution’s own pages give no RTP for either.
A 97.30% RTP is the same as a 2.70% house edge: over a very large number of rounds, about £2.70 of every £100 staked is kept by the game. That’s the same edge as a standard single-zero European roulette table, which suggests the extra features rearrange the return rather than shrink it. For the live version, check the help screen, which UK rules require to explain the game and the likelihood of winning.
| Stake per round | Rounds | Total staked | Average cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20p | 100 | £20 | 54p |
| £1 | 100 | £100 | £2.70 |
| £1 | 500 | £500 | £13.50 |
| £5 | 100 | £500 | £13.50 |
These are averages. In a game built around rare 500x to 2,000x payouts, most sessions finish below the average result and a small minority finish far above it.
What a 2,000x multiplier means in pounds
Multipliers scale with your straight-up stake. This table shows the payout for a struck winning number at a few stake levels:
| Straight-up stake | At 50x | At 500x | At 2,000x |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20p | £10 | £100 | £400 |
| 50p | £25 | £250 | £1,000 |
| £1 | £50 | £500 | £2,000 |
| £5 | £250 | £2,500 | £10,000 |
Two caps can apply beyond the game: the table’s maximum stake and any maximum payout the casino sets. Check both in the rules before thinking of the top line as reachable. A multiplier headline describes the best case, not a typical result.
Why XXXtreme is the most volatile Lightning game
If two games have a similar RTP but one pays more of it through rare, very large payouts, that one is more volatile. XXXtreme does exactly that: more spots and a 2,000x ceiling mean a larger share of the straight-up return is tied up in outcomes most players will never see.
Practically, that means longer losing runs on single numbers. A £20 budget at 20p a chip buys 100 straight-up bets; at 1 hit in 37, that’s about two or three ordinary wins on average, and very often no struck win at all. Our guide to volatility and the page on risk of ruin explain how budget size and swings interact.

Strategy myths about XXXtreme Lightning Roulette
- ‘Chain Lightning numbers repeat.’ Each round’s spots are drawn fresh. Tracking past strikes is the gambler’s fallacy in a new outfit.
- ‘Covering lots of numbers catches the 2,000x.’ Each extra chip adds its own cost at the same edge. Covering 18 numbers just means paying 18 times as much per round.
- ‘A big multiplier is due.’ Rare outcomes don’t become likelier after a dry spell. See our page on roulette myths.
- ‘A staking plan protects you.’ Raising stakes after losses only speeds up how fast a bad run costs you, as the Martingale maths shows.
UK rules for XXXtreme Lightning Roulette online
As a casino game that isn’t a slot, XXXtreme is covered by the Gambling Commission’s 2025 game design rules. Under RTS 14 (opens in a new tab), each game cycle must last at least 5 seconds, you can’t speed up the result, and the game can’t celebrate a return that is equal to or below your stake. Autoplay is banned for live and RNG casino games alike, though a re-bet button is fine.
The slot stake limits of £5 (or £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds) don’t apply to roulette. That makes your own limits more important: set a deposit limit and keep an eye on the net-spend display UK casinos must show. Our UK rules for live casino page lists every rule in force.

Frequently asked questions
What is the highest multiplier in XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
The highest multiplier is 2,000x, reached through a Double Strike that lifts a multiplier into the 600x to 2,000x band. It only pays on a straight-up bet that lands on a struck number. On a £1 chip that would be £2,000, subject to table and casino payout limits. Our guide to the highest roulette payouts puts this in context with other games.
What is the RTP of XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
The only published figure is 97.30%, listed on a UK operator page for the RNG First Person version. Evolution’s own pages don’t give an RTP for the live game, so check the help screen at your casino. A 97.30% return equals a 2.70% house edge, the same as standard single-zero roulette. Our roulette house edge page explains what that costs per £100 staked.
What is Chain Lightning?
Chain Lightning is a feature that adds up to nine extra lucky bet spots to a round, on top of the one to five Lightning Numbers. No round can have more than ten struck spots in total. Like the main Lightning Numbers, they only boost straight-up bets. Evolution doesn’t publish how often Chain Lightning appears. See Lightning live games for how the feature fits the wider series.
How is XXXtreme different from Lightning Roulette?
XXXtreme allows up to ten struck spots instead of five, and its Double Strikes can lift multipliers to 2,000x instead of a 500x top. Both games use 50x to 500x for their standard Lightning Numbers. The result is a streakier game, with more of the return tied to rare outcomes. Our comparison of the two sets them side by side.
Do outside bets get multipliers in XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
No. Evolution’s rules say a multiplied payout needs a straight-up bet on a Lightning or Chain Lightning Number, so red/black, dozens, columns and other group bets never collect one. Check the help screen for exactly how those bets pay at your table. Our page on outside bets explains the standard versions and their odds.
Is there a strategy for XXXtreme Lightning Roulette?
No strategy changes the house edge. Lightning spots are drawn fresh each round, so following past strikes doesn’t help, and spreading chips across more numbers simply raises your cost per round. What you can control is your budget, stake size and session length. Our answer to is there a roulette strategy that works? covers the maths behind this.
When was XXXtreme Lightning Roulette released?
Evolution’s press release announcing XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is dated 25 May 2022. It arrived four years after the original Lightning Roulette, which Evolution launched in 2018, and it was presented as the latest member of the Lightning family of live games. For background on the studio, see our Evolution live casino page.
Is XXXtreme Lightning Roulette available as an RNG game?
Yes. Evolution lists XXXtreme Lightning Roulette among its First Person titles, which are RNG games with 3D animation instead of a live studio. A UK operator page shows a 97.30% RTP and 20p minimum stake for that version. Under UK standards, RNG results must be acceptably random. Read RNG vs live roulette for the differences.
