Cluster pays slots explained

Cluster pays slots pay when enough identical symbols touch each other on the grid, instead of lining up along paylines or across reels. Most games need a group of five or more, joined side by side or top to bottom. Here's how clusters are counted, how the paytable scales with cluster size, and what cluster games cost to play.

Key takeaways

  • A cluster is a group of identical symbols touching each other, usually side by side or top to bottom; check each game's rule on diagonals.
  • The minimum cluster varies by game, from 3 in TNT Tumble to 9 in Aloha! Cluster Pays, with 5 the most common.
  • Prizes climb steeply with cluster size, so a lot of the RTP sits in large, rare clusters.
  • Cluster games usually use big grids and are often high volatility, so set a firm budget.

What cluster pays slots are

A cluster pays slot drops a grid of symbols and pays for any group of identical symbols that are clustered together, rather than on lines, as this guide to slot features (opens in a new tab) puts it. There's no left-to-right rule and no need to start on the first reel: a cluster can form anywhere on the grid.

What counts as touching depends on the game. In Nolimit City's The Border, for example, winning groups are matching symbols that touch vertically or horizontally, and five or more are needed for a payout, according to this report on The Border's launch (opens in a new tab). Diagonal contact doesn't count in that game; other titles set their own rules, so the help screen is where to confirm it.

Clusters are one of several win systems on our slot features hub, alongside paylines, ways to win and Megaways.

Cluster pays grids and minimum cluster sizes

The minimum cluster is set per game, so it's worth checking before you play. These figures come from the published specifications in our reviews.

Grid sizes and minimum clusters
SlotGridPositionsMinimum cluster
TNT Tumble5 × 4, expanding to 5 × 720 to 353
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness5 × 5254
Reactoonz7 × 7495

Viking Runecraft7 × 7495
Jammin' Jars8 × 8645
Honey RushHexagonal375
Retro TapesLarge grid545
Aloha! Cluster Pays6 × 5309

Honey Rush is a good reminder that ‘touching’ depends on the shape of the grid: on a hexagonal layout each cell has six neighbours rather than four, so the rules in the help screen matter more than usual.

How to spot and count a cluster win

The game highlights wins automatically, but counting one yourself shows exactly why a result paid what it did.

  1. Pick a symbol and find every copy of it on the grid.
  2. Trace which copies touch side by side or top to bottom, and check the help screen to see whether diagonal contact counts.
  3. Count each connected group separately; two groups of the same symbol are two clusters.
  4. Discard any group smaller than the game's minimum cluster size.
  5. Look up each remaining cluster's size in the paytable and add the prizes together.

How cluster pays slots pay out

Cluster paytables list a prize for each symbol at each cluster size, and the prizes rise steeply. The table below uses made-up values purely to show the typical shape; every game publishes its own figures in the paytable.

Illustrative cluster paytable for one symbol (not a real game)
Cluster sizePrize (× total stake)Win on a 50p spin
50.2×10p
81×50p
125×£2.50
15+25×£12.50

Two things follow from that shape. Small clusters often return less than the stake, so a spin can show a win yet still lose money. And because the large clusters pay so much more, a big share of the game's RTP comes from results that happen rarely. That's one reason cluster games so often carry a high volatility rating.

Cluster pays vs pay anywhere slots

Cluster pays is easy to confuse with pay anywhere, sometimes called scatter pays. In a pay anywhere game, symbols don't need to touch: enough copies anywhere on screen will pay.

Pay anywhere wins rely on the same idea as scatter symbols: position doesn't matter, only how many land.

Cluster pays and cascading reels

Cluster games are often paired with cascades, which remove the winning symbols after paying them and let new symbols fall into the gaps. In The Border, winning cluster symbols disappear and new ones drop into place, which can create further wins from the same spin. Gigantoonz is listed as cluster pays with cascades on an 8 × 8 grid.

This pairing makes sense on big grids, where a single removal can reshape a large area. Our page on cascading reels explains how those chains work and what they mean for the maths.

Nolimit City's first cluster game

Cluster pays has been around for years, but some studios came to it late. Nolimit City co-founder Emil Svärd called The Border, released in September 2022, ‘our first cluster game’. Who invented the mechanic isn't something we've been able to confirm, so we don't date its origin.

What cluster pays slots cost on a £20 budget

The average cost of play is the amount staked multiplied by the house edge. Jammin' Jars at 96.83% has an edge of 3.17%, so staking £20 once through the game costs about 63p on average, whatever the spin size. What the stake changes is how many spins that £20 buys and how hard a run of losing spins hits.

Stake per spinSpins from £20Average cost of staking £20 once
10p200about 63p
50p40about 63p
£120about 63p

In a high-volatility cluster game, the real result of 20 or 40 spins is rarely close to the average. Many sessions lose most of the budget, and a few land a large cluster that pays well above it. Our guides to slot volatility and how long £20 lasts on a slot go further.

Cluster pays myths

  • Myth: a grid full of near-misses means a big cluster is coming. Each drop is random and independent; four matching symbols one short of a cluster tell you nothing about the next spin.
  • Myth: bigger grids pay more. A bigger grid means more symbols per spin, but the paytable is balanced to the same target RTP.
  • Myth: lots of small cluster wins mean you're ahead. Small clusters often pay less than the stake, so check your net position, which UK games must show.

More of these beliefs are tackled in our slot machine myths guide.

UK rules for cluster pays slots

Cluster games are online slots under UK rules, so the £5 stake limit for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24 apply to each game cycle; see our slot stake limits page. Each spin must take at least 2.5 seconds, and autoplay, turbo and slam-stop are not allowed.

One rule is especially relevant to clusters. Under RTS 14 on responsible product design (opens in a new tab), a game must not celebrate a return less than or equal to the total stake. A 50p spin that lands a single small cluster worth 10p shouldn't come with winning sounds and animations. Our UK game design rules page sets out the full list.

Frequently asked questions

What does cluster pays mean in slots?

Cluster pays means the slot pays for a group of identical symbols touching each other on the grid, rather than for symbols lined up along paylines. Many games count side-by-side and up-and-down contact and need at least five symbols. A cluster can form anywhere, with no need to start on the first reel. Our slot features hub compares the main win systems.

How many symbols make a cluster?

It depends on the game. Five is the most common minimum, used by Reactoonz, Sugar Rush and Jammin' Jars, but TNT Tumble needs only three, Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness four and Aloha! Cluster Pays nine. The minimum is stated in each game's paytable, and it's worth checking before you play, because it changes how often wins land.

Do diagonal symbols count in cluster pays?

Usually not, but it depends on the game. Nolimit City's The Border, for example, counts only vertical and horizontal contact Other square-grid games may set a different rule, so never assume. Hexagonal grids such as Honey Rush are different, because every cell has six neighbours. The help screen states the exact rule for each game.

What is the difference between cluster pays and pay anywhere?

Cluster pays needs the matching symbols to touch, while pay anywhere only needs enough of them somewhere on screen. Sweet Bonanza, for example, pays for eight or more matching symbols anywhere on its 6 × 5 grid, whereas Reactoonz needs five or more connected symbols. Both are built to a target RTP, so neither is better in itself.

Are cluster pays slots high volatility?

Many are, though not all. Cluster paytables rise steeply with cluster size, so a large share of the RTP sits in big, rare clusters, which pushes volatility up. Most of the cluster games in our reviews are rated high or very high, but Gemix is listed as medium. Our guide to slot volatility explains what the rating means for a budget.

Which cluster pays slot has the highest RTP?

Among the cluster games in our reviews, Jammin' Jars and Gemix both list a top RTP of 96.83%. Remember that a casino may run a lower version, so check the figure shown in the game's help screen. A higher RTP lowers the average cost, but it doesn't make any session predictable. See is a higher RTP slot better for more.

Why do cluster pays slots use cascading reels?

Cascades suit big grids: after a cluster pays, the winning symbols are removed and new ones fall in, which can form fresh clusters within the same spin at no extra stake. In The Border, winning symbols disappear and new symbols drop into place. The chance of those follow-on wins is already counted in the RTP. The maths of those chains is covered in our guide to cascading reels.

Can you win money on every cluster?

No. Many small clusters pay less than your stake, so the spin shows a win but you are still down overall. That's why UK rules stop games celebrating returns that are less than or equal to the stake, and require your net position to be shown during play. Both requirements are explained in our guide to UK game design rules.
