How the features work in Sugar Rush Xmas
Wins in this Christmas game come from clusters rather than lines: five or more matching symbols touching each other on the 7 × 7 grid form a win. Its main feature is a free spins round in which multiplier spots persist, meaning they stay on the grid from one spin to the next instead of disappearing.
Reaching the free spins
The round is triggered through ordinary paid spins, and since feature buys aren’t offered to British players, that’s the only route. Once it begins, the spins aren’t charged to your balance and the winnings build up until the round ends.
What a persistent multiplier spot does
A multiplier spot is a marked position on the grid. If a winning cluster covers that position, the win is multiplied. In this round the spots don’t reset when a spin finishes, so a spot created early on is still there for later spins. As the round goes on, the grid can carry more and more of these marked positions, and clusters landing across them benefit.
That’s why the end of a bonus can matter more than the start. A spin late in the round may land on a grid already dotted with spots, while the first spin has none to work with. Equally, a round in which clusters keep missing the spots pays little, however many are on the board.
How spots appear, the values they can reach and the number of spins in the round aren’t part of our checked data. Those figures are on the help screen, along with the RTP version your casino runs.
How cluster pays work on the 7×7 grid
There are no paylines. Instead, the game uses cluster pays: a win needs at least five identical symbols joined together across the grid. With 49 positions on screen, a five-symbol cluster covers just over a tenth of the board, and larger clusters pay more according to the paytable.
Because wins depend on how symbols group rather than on lines, the size of the grid matters. A large square board gives room for big clusters, but it also means many spins where symbols scatter without connecting. That is part of why the game is rated high volatility. The game rules explain exactly what counts as connected and whether winning symbols are removed and replaced, so read them before you play.
Cluster size thresholds differ between games. This game needs five; other cluster slots set their own minimum, so never assume one game’s rule applies to another.
Free spins with persistent multiplier spots
The bonus is a free spins round, triggered in play, in which multiplier spots on the grid persist from one spin to the next instead of resetting. A multiplier spot boosts any win that passes through that position, and because the spots stay for the round, later spins can benefit from spots created earlier.
That persistence is where much of the game’s upside sits. How spots are created, how high their values can climb and how many spins the round gives are set out in the game’s help screen; we have not verified those details from Pragmatic, so we do not state them here. Our multipliers guide explains how stacked or combined multipliers are usually calculated.
Sugar Rush Xmas RTP: comparing the three versions
Pragmatic offers the game at 96.50%, 95.50% and 94.50%, and each casino chooses which to run. The game plays the same at every setting, so the only way to know is to open the rules. The cost difference is easy to work out: subtract the RTP from 100% and multiply by your total amount staked.
| Version | House edge | Cost per £100 staked | Cost of 500 spins at 20p (£100 turnover) | Cost of 500 spins at £1 (£500 turnover) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 96.50% | 3.50% | £3.50 | £3.50 | £17.50 |
| 95.50% | 4.50% | £4.50 | £4.50 | £22.50 |
| 94.50% | 5.50% | £5.50 | £5.50 | £27.50 |
At £1 a spin, the lowest version costs £10 more on average than the top one over 500 spins. That is a real difference for the same entertainment. Our guide to UK RTP display rules explains where the figure must appear, and our house edge page shows the same sum for table games.
A £20 budget on Sugar Rush Xmas
With high volatility, how many spins your budget buys matters more than the edge in a single session. On the 96.50% version:
- 10p: 200 spins of headroom; average cost of £20 staked is 70p. The best stake for seeing the bonus at least once.
- 50p: 40 spins; the same 70p average cost per £20, but a real chance the session ends before the free spins.
- £1: 20 spins; essentially a short gamble on early luck.
On the 94.50% version the average cost of £20 staked rises to £1.10. The swings stay similar. Our slot volatility guide covers how to match stake size to budget.
Sugar Rush Xmas max win of 5,000x
The top prize is 5,000 times your stake. Pragmatic does not publish how often it occurs.
| Stake | Maximum win |
|---|---|
| 10p | £500 |
| 20p | £1,000 |
| 50p | £2,500 |
| £1 | £5,000 |
| £2 (18–24 limit) | £10,000 |
| £5 (25+ limit) | £25,000 |
For a high-volatility game, 5,000x is a fairly low ceiling. With a lower cap, less of the return needs to be reserved for extremely rare results, though the published figures alone do not tell us how the rest is spread.
Sugar Rush Xmas against Sugar Rush and Sugar Rush 1000
The Sugar Rush line now has several entries, and Pragmatic’s other festive candy game is worth adding to the comparison:
| Slot | RTP | Volatility | Max win |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sugar Rush Xmas | 96.50% (95.50%, 94.50%) | High | 5,000× |
| Sugar Rush | 96.50% | High | 5,000× |
| Sugar Rush 1000 | Up to 96.53% (lower versions exist) | Very high | 25,000× |
| Sweet Bonanza Xmas | 96.48% (96.51% with Ante Bet) | Medium | Check the help screen |
On published figures, Sugar Rush Xmas matches the original on RTP and ceiling, so the choice is mostly about the look. Sugar Rush 1000 is the one for players who want a much wider range of results. Sweet Bonanza Xmas is the calmer option, rated medium volatility. More festive and sweet-themed games sit in our Christmas slots and candy slots collections.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Sugar Rush Xmas?
Sugar Rush Xmas has three published RTP versions: 96.50%, 95.50% and 94.50%. The casino chooses which to offer, and the game looks identical at each setting. On the top version the average cost is £3.50 per £100 staked; on the lowest it is £5.50. The game rules at your casino show the version in use. Our slot RTP guide explains more.
How does Sugar Rush Xmas pay?
It uses cluster pays on a 7×7 grid. You win when five or more identical symbols connect, and bigger clusters pay more. There are no paylines, so wins can form anywhere on the board as long as the symbols are joined. The game rules set out exactly what counts as connected. Our cluster pays guide explains the mechanic in general.
What is the max win on Sugar Rush Xmas?
The maximum win is 5,000 times your stake. That is £500 at 10p, £5,000 at £1 and £25,000 at the £5 UK maximum for players aged 25 and over. It is the ceiling for a single round, and Pragmatic does not publish how often it is reached. If you want a higher cap from the same series, see our Sugar Rush 1000 review.
Is Sugar Rush Xmas the same as Sugar Rush?
On published figures they are very close. Both have a top RTP of 96.50%, high volatility, a 7×7 grid, cluster pays from five symbols and a 5,000x ceiling. The Xmas edition adds Christmas styling and has two lower RTP versions on record. Compare the details in our Sugar Rush review before you choose.
How do the multiplier spots work in Sugar Rush Xmas?
During the free spins round, multiplier spots on the grid persist from spin to spin rather than resetting, so wins passing through those positions are boosted for the rest of the round. How spots are created and how high they can go is explained in the game’s help screen. Our slot multipliers guide covers how multipliers affect wins.
Can you buy the bonus on Sugar Rush Xmas in the UK?
No. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the free spins can only be triggered by playing. The Commission said such features risked breaching its rules on clear game information and on encouraging players to chase losses. Our feature buy page explains the background in full.
Is Sugar Rush Xmas good for low stakes?
Low stakes suit it well, because high volatility means you need plenty of spins to give the bonus a chance to appear. At 10p a spin, £20 gives 200 spins of headroom. The average cost per £1 staked is the same at any stake, but more spins means a smoother session. Our how to choose a slot guide has more tips.
Who makes Sugar Rush Xmas?
Pragmatic Play makes it, a studio founded in 2015 and headquartered in Gibraltar. It is licensed by the Gambling Commission and over 30 other regulators, and its best-known games include Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza and Big Bass Bonanza. See our Pragmatic Play page for its other slots and their published figures.
