How the features work in Cygnus

Cygnus is built around a grid that grows during a single spin. The growth, the multiplier and the Free Drops bonus together explain almost everything about how the slot pays.

Avalanches and extra rows

Every spin starts on six reels with four rows, which gives 4,096 ways. When a win lands, the winning symbols are removed in an avalanche and new ones fall into their place, the same idea as cascading reels. Each avalanche also adds a row, up to eight. With eight symbols on each of six reels, the ways count reaches 8 to the power of 6, or 262,144.

Multiplier symbols can appear along the way. Each one raises a win multiplier that applies for the rest of that spin, so later avalanches on the taller grid are also paid at a higher multiplier.

Free Drops

The bonus begins when a Bonus symbol reaches the leftmost column. It gives 7 free drops played on the fully expanded eight-row grid, so every drop starts at 262,144 ways rather than 4,096. Any multipliers active when it begins stay in place for the whole round instead of being lost.

How the Bonus symbol travels across the grid and what each symbol pays are explained in the help screen. PokerListings' Cygnus page (opens in a new tab) describes the same features. Feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so Free Drops arrive only through normal play.

From 4,096 to 262,144 ways: how the Cygnus grid grows

Cygnus is a ways to win game: wins need matching symbols on adjacent reels rather than on fixed lines. The number of ways is simply the number of rows multiplied across all six reels. At the starting height of four rows that is 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 = 4,096. Each extra row lifts the total sharply.

Cygnus ways at each grid height
Rows on every reelPositions on screenWays to win

53015,625
63646,656
742117,649
8 (maximum)48262,144

Going from four rows to eight doubles the screen but multiplies the ways by 64, because the growth compounds across six reels. That is why the top figure looks so large next to the starting one.

What the extra Cygnus rows do and don't change

More rows mean more positions and more paths for a win, so the most valuable results tend to happen when the grid is tall. They do not change the game's RTP, which is fixed at 96.1% across the whole model, including the spins where the grid stays small.

Rows are added by avalanches, as the features section above explains: winning symbols are removed, new ones drop in and the grid gains a row. A tall grid therefore only ever follows at least one win on the same spin, which is why the largest ways counts are the exception rather than the norm.

Cygnus RTP: 96.1% in pounds

The house edge is 3.9%. That is a mid-table figure: better than several ELK titles listed at 94%, such as Pirots, and slightly below Wild Toro at 96.4%. On £500 of spins, Cygnus costs about £10.50 less on average than a 94% game.

10p39p£2.34£3.90
50p£1.95£11.70£3.90
£1£3.90£23.40£3.90

The last column shows that the edge is the same percentage at every stake; only the speed at which money is turned over changes. Read our RTP explainer for how these long-run averages are set and tested.

Medium–high volatility: Cygnus on a £20 budget

Medium–high volatility sits a notch below the harshest games. Expect plenty of small or empty spins, with the bigger results arriving when the grid is tall. With £20:

  • 10p a spin gives 200 spins before any returns, enough time for the grid to grow a number of times.
  • 50p a spin gives 40 spins, a short session in which the tall-grid moments may not arrive.
  • £1 a spin gives 20 spins, which is very little for a game whose value builds with the grid.

The Wizard of Odds guide to slots (opens in a new tab) notes that RTP and volatility vary independently between games, which is why the same 96.1% can feel very different on another title.

Cygnus max win in context

The cap is 5,000 times stake: £500 at 10p, £2,500 at 50p and £5,000 at £1. At the UK maximums, that rises to £10,000 on a £2 stake (18–24) and £25,000 on a £5 stake (25 and over). It is a moderate ceiling compared with ELK's Nitropolis at 10,000x and consistent with the medium–high rating. There is no official figure for how often it is reached; our max win question page explains why the ceiling isn't a guide to a normal session.

Nitropolis is the closest relative: the same 6x4 starting grid, the same RTP and volatility, but a far larger maximum ways count and twice the ceiling. Wild Toro has the best RTP of the group. More choices are in our slot reviews.

ELK Studios was founded in 2013 and is based in Stockholm. Its licensed entities are ELKAB Studios AB and ELK Studios Malta Ltd. It holds a Gambling Commission licence under account 40844 and a Malta Gaming Authority licence issued on 27 February 2019. Cygnus online: the UK rules

  • Stake limits: £5 per spin at 25 and over, £2 at 18–24, following the government's stake limit announcement (opens in a new tab). Our stake limits page has the dates.
  • Design rules: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, no autoplay and no celebrating returns below your stake, under RTS 14 (opens in a new tab) (our design rules guide).
  • Feature buys: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so any paid route into a feature seen in other markets won't appear.
  • Fair outcomes: results must be random, and games can't swap losing outcomes for near misses.

How to play Cygnus online

  1. Open an account at a UKGC-licensed casino and complete age and identity verification.
  2. Set a deposit limit when prompted, before your first deposit.
  3. Launch Cygnus and read the help screen, especially the symbol values and how the Bonus symbol moves.
  4. Choose a stake; 10p gives 200 spins from a £20 budget.
  5. Start each spin yourself and watch how the grid height changes.
  6. Stop when you reach your planned limit, whatever the grid is doing.

Cygnus myths about growing grids

  • A tall grid means a big win is coming. A taller grid adds paths, but the outcome of each spin is still random.
  • Near misses mean you were close. UK rules ban designs that substitute losing results with near misses, so a 'nearly' is just a loss (RTS 7 on random outcomes (opens in a new tab)).
  • 262,144 ways means better odds than 4,096-way games. The paytable is balanced so the RTP stays at 96.1%.
  • The game pays more at night. Timing makes no difference; see do slots pay out more at certain times.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Cygnus?

Cygnus has an RTP of 96.1%, which means a house edge of 3.9%. Over the very long run, that is about 3.9p lost for every £1 staked, though sessions vary widely. It is higher than several ELK games listed at 94% and a little below Wild Toro's 96.4%. Check the help screen at your casino. Our RTP guide explains how the figure is used.

How many ways to win does Cygnus have?

Cygnus starts with 4,096 ways to win and can reach 262,144. The six reels begin with four rows each and can grow to eight, and the ways are the rows multiplied across all six reels. More ways don't change the RTP, which stays at 96.1%. Our ways to win guide explains how the calculation works on other grids.

What is the max win on Cygnus?

The maximum win on Cygnus is 5,000 times your stake. That is £500 at 10p, £5,000 at £1 and £25,000 at the £5 UK maximum for players aged 25 and over. It is a moderate cap for a medium–high volatility game, half that of ELK's Nitropolis. See what a max win cap means for how caps work.

Is Cygnus a high volatility slot?

Cygnus is rated medium–high volatility, a step below the harshest games. Expect a fair number of small or empty spins, with bigger results most likely when the grid has grown. A low stake gives the game more time to do that within a fixed budget. Our volatility explainer compares the different ratings with worked examples.

Who makes the Cygnus slot?

ELK Studios makes Cygnus, which it released in 2019. ELK was founded in 2013, is based in Stockholm and holds a UK Gambling Commission licence under account 40844. It is also known for Wild Toro, Pirots and Nitropolis. Our ELK Studios page lists its games with their RTPs, volatility and max wins.

Is Cygnus like Nitropolis?

Yes, the two ELK games are close relatives. Both start on a 6x4 grid with 4,096 ways, both have a 96.1% RTP and both are rated medium–high volatility. Nitropolis can reach far more ways, up to 85,155,840, and has a 10,000x cap against Cygnus's 5,000x. Read our Nitropolis review for its full figures.

Can I buy features on Cygnus in the UK?

No, you can't pay to enter features on Cygnus as a British player. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so features come only through normal play. Descriptions written for other markets may mention a paid option. Our UK feature buy rules page explains why.

What stake should I play Cygnus at?

A low stake usually works best on Cygnus, because its value builds as the grid grows and that takes spins. At 10p, £20 gives 200 spins; at £1, only 20. UK law caps stakes at £5 for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24s. Pick a stake that fits a budget you set beforehand. Our £20 slot budget page has more examples.
