Fortune Coin slot at a glance
Fortune Coin is built by IGT, the Las Vegas company behind Cleopatra, Da Vinci Diamonds and Wolf Run, now owned by Apollo-managed funds and combined with Everi since 1 July 2025. The game is one of the reviews in our slots hub. Rather than fixed paylines it uses ways to win, and its headline symbol is the Fortune Coin itself, which can send you to one of three different rewards.

We've been strict about the third column. Plenty of slot listings print volatility ratings, hit rates and maximum wins for games like this, but they often disagree and aren't the developer's own numbers. If a figure isn't in our checked data, we don't state it. The casinos.com Fortune Coin page (opens in a new tab) is one outside description of the game if you'd like a second view of its features.
How 243 ways to win work on the Fortune Coin slot
A ways to win slot pays when matching symbols land on adjacent reels, normally starting from the leftmost reel, in any row. There are no lines to trace. On a five-reel, three-row grid, any of the three positions on each reel can join a win, so the number of possible paths is 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243.
The practical effect is that one symbol appearing more than once on a reel multiplies the number of ways it pays. Count how many times the symbol shows on each reel in the winning run, then multiply those counts together.
| Reel 1 | Reel 2 | Reel 3 | Reel 4 | Ways paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 symbol | 1 symbol | 1 symbol | none | 1 × 1 × 1 = 1 way (3 of a kind) |
| 1 symbol | 2 symbols | 1 symbol | none | 1 × 2 × 1 = 2 ways |
| 2 symbols | 2 symbols | 3 symbols | none | 2 × 2 × 3 = 12 ways |
| 1 symbol | none | 3 symbols | 3 symbols | 0 ways: reel 2 breaks the run |
That last row is the one people miss. Ways still need adjacent reels, so a gap on reel 2 kills the win however many symbols land further right. If you'd like to compare this with line-based games, our guide to slot paylines shows how a fixed-line slot like Cleopatra decides wins instead.
Whether wins are paid left to right only, and how the stake is split across the 243 ways, are set out in the game's help screen. Neither is specified in our checked data.
How the features work
Everything special in Fortune Coin runs through one symbol. Fortune Coin symbols can land on the reels during normal play, and when they do they can lead to one of three outcomes.
- Free games. The coins can award a set of free spins, played at no extra stake.
- Cash prizes. The coins can pay a cash prize directly, without needing a normal symbol win alongside them.
- The jackpot feature. The coins can send you into a separate jackpot feature, which holds four jackpots.
That's the whole shape of the game: an ordinary 243-ways base game, with the coin as the gateway to the extras. We don't have verified details of how many coins are needed for each outcome, how many free games are awarded, or how the jackpot feature decides which of the four prizes you win, so check the paytable in the game for those details before you play. It's also worth reading whether the coin counts as a scatter for any other pays.
Fortune Coin RTP: what “up to 96.20%” means
IGT's figure is a maximum. Developers often supply a slot at several RTP settings and the casino chooses which one to run, so “up to 96.20%” tells you the best version, not necessarily the one in front of you. UK rules require the game's rules and return information to be available before you play, under the Commission's RTS 3 on rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab), so the actual figure should be in the game's information panel.
Why does it matter? Expected loss is stake times house edge, and every percentage point of RTP is £1 per £100 staked. The table uses 96.20% plus a lower setting chosen purely to illustrate the arithmetic; it is not a confirmed Fortune Coin version.
| RTP setting | House edge | Average cost per £100 staked | Average cost of 300 spins at 50p |
|---|---|---|---|
| 96.20% (published maximum) | 3.80% | £3.80 | £5.70 |
| 94.20% (illustration only) | 5.80% | £5.80 | £8.70 |
Two points apart doesn't sound like much, but over £150 of spins it adds £3 to the average cost. Our explainer on why slot RTPs differ between casinos covers this, and the RTP vs house edge page shows how the two numbers relate.
Fortune Coin jackpots: four prizes, read the small print
The jackpot feature holds four jackpots. Their names, their values and whether they're fixed amounts or progressive jackpots that grow with play aren't in our checked data, so look in the help screen for:
- the name and current value of each jackpot at your stake;
- whether any of them are progressive, and if so whether they're linked across several games or casinos;
- how the feature picks which jackpot you win;
- whether the top jackpot needs a particular stake.
One general point applies to any slot with jackpots: the money that funds the prizes is part of the game's RTP. A share of every stake goes towards them, so the base game returns a little less than it otherwise would. Our progressive jackpot odds page works through that trade-off with numbers.
Fortune Coin volatility: no published rating
We don't have a verified volatility rating for Fortune Coin, so we won't label it high, medium or low. You can still get a feel for how spread out its results are by looking at three things in the paytable: how big the top regular symbol pays are compared with your stake, how large the jackpots are, and how much of the game's value seems to sit in the coin features rather than normal wins.
As a rule of thumb, the more of a game's return that comes from rare features and jackpots, the more sessions end below average while a few end far above it. That's why a cautious approach is to start at a small stake and treat the first few hundred spins as finding out how the game behaves, rather than to assume either a gentle or a wild ride.
A £20 Fortune Coin budget at 10p, 50p and £1
Using the 96.20% maximum, each spin costs 3.80% of its stake on average. The table looks at how many spins £20 covers on its own and how much turning over that £20 costs on average, before any wins are recycled.
| Stake | Spins covered by £20 | Average cost per spin | Average loss on £20 staked | Average cost of 300 spins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10p | 200 | 0.38p | 76p | £1.14 |
| 50p | 40 | 1.9p | 76p | £5.70 |
| £1 | 20 | 3.8p | 76p | £11.40 |
The middle columns show something counter-intuitive. Staking £20 once in total costs the same 76p on average whatever the spin size, because the edge is a percentage. What changes is how quickly you go through it. At £1 a spin you'll usually stake far more than £20 in a session, because wins get spun again, so the hourly cost is what to watch. Our cost per hour guide and expected value page show the method.

The Fortune Coin name in slot history
The name has history. In 1976 a Las Vegas-based firm called Fortune Coin Co. developed what is recorded as the first video slot machine, built in Kearny Mesa, California, around a modified 19-inch Sony Trinitron receiver. Its first production units were tested at the Las Vegas Hilton before Nevada approval. In 1978 the company and its video slot technology were bought by the business we now know as IGT, which was then called Sircoma and took the IGT name in 1981. The Wikipedia slot machine article (opens in a new tab) summarises that story.
We aren't claiming today's online Fortune Coin is a direct descendant of that 1970s cabinet; the shared name and owner are simply a neat link. For the wider story, from mechanical reels to the video screen, see our history of slot machines.
Playing Fortune Coin under UK slot rules
British versions of Fortune Coin follow the same Gambling Commission rules as every online slot:
- a stake cap of £5 per spin for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for those aged 18 to 24 (since 21 May 2025), set out in the Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) and our slot stake limits page;
- no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, and at least 2.5 seconds between spins, in force since 31 October 2021; see why there's no autoplay on UK slots;
- no celebrating a return that is equal to or less than your stake;
- your net position and session time shown in real time, since 17 January 2025;
- no feature buy: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players;
- age verification before you can deposit, gamble or even play the free demo.
Winnings aren't taxed for UK players. Credit cards can't be used to fund play, including through e-wallets topped up by credit card.

Frequently asked questions
What is the RTP of Fortune Coin?
Fortune Coin has an RTP of up to 96.20%, so the best version keeps 3.80% of stakes on average over the long run. Because the figure is a maximum, a casino may run a lower setting; the information panel inside the game shows the one in use. A higher RTP lowers the average cost but doesn't change how unpredictable short sessions are. Our higher RTP question explains when the difference matters.
How many ways to win does Fortune Coin have?
Fortune Coin has 243 ways to win, which comes from its five reels of three rows: 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 = 243. A win needs matching symbols on adjacent reels, normally from the left, in any row, so two copies of a symbol on one reel double the ways that win pays. A gap on any reel in the run ends the win. Our ways to win guide shows how bigger grids reach 1,024 or more.
What do the Fortune Coin symbols do?
Fortune Coin symbols are the game's feature symbols: when they land they can award free games, a cash prize, or entry to a jackpot feature with four jackpots. Our checked data doesn't state how many coins each outcome needs or how many free games you get, so check the game's paytable for those rules. The coins are the only route into the extras. Our bonus rounds page explains how slot features generally fit into a game's RTP.
Does Fortune Coin have a progressive jackpot?
Fortune Coin has a jackpot feature with four jackpots, but our checked data doesn't confirm whether any of them are progressive or what they're worth. The game's help screen will show each jackpot's value at your stake and whether it grows over time. Either way, jackpot funding comes out of the RTP, so it isn't extra value on top. See our jackpot slots page for how fixed and progressive pots differ.
Is Fortune Coin a high volatility slot?
There's no verified volatility rating for Fortune Coin in our checked data, so we don't label it. You can judge it yourself from the paytable: large jackpots and features that hold much of the game's value usually mean more uneven results. Start at a small stake while you learn how it behaves, and set a firm budget. Our slot volatility guide explains the categories and what they mean for a session.
Who makes Fortune Coin?
Fortune Coin is made by IGT, the Las Vegas-based supplier best known online for Cleopatra, Da Vinci Diamonds and Wolf Run. IGT has been owned by Apollo-managed funds and combined with Everi since 1 July 2025. The name also echoes Fortune Coin Co., whose 1976 video slot IGT's predecessor bought in 1978. Our IGT slots page lists the studio's games with RTP figures from our checked data.
What's the most I can stake on Fortune Coin in the UK?
The most you can stake is £5 a spin if you're aged 25 or over, or £2 a spin if you're 18 to 24, under Gambling Commission rules that took effect in April and May 2025. The game itself may have a lower maximum, so check the bet menu. These limits cover online slots only. Our page on UK slot stake limits explains how they apply within a single game cycle.
Can I play Fortune Coin for free?
Some UK casinos offer a demo mode, but you'll still need to pass age verification before you can play it, because UK rules require checks even for free-to-play games. Demo play is a sensible way to read the paytable and see how the coin features behave before risking money. Results in demo use the same maths as real play.
