Gemix slot basics

Gemix is an older cluster pays game from Play'n GO, the independent Swedish studio based in Växjö that is also behind Reactoonz and Book of Dead. Released in 2014, it replaces reels and lines with a square grid of gems, and replaces the usual free spins round for a set of meter-driven features and a journey through three worlds.

How the features work in Gemix

Three systems run together in Gemix: cascading clusters, the Crystal Charge meter and the worlds. The summaries in the Gemix entry on SlotCatalog (opens in a new tab) and the Casinos.com Gemix guide (opens in a new tab) agree on how they fit together.

Clusters and cascades

When five or more matching gems form a group, the cluster pays and the gems vanish. New symbols drop in to fill the space, a form of cascading reels, and if they make a fresh cluster that pays as well. Bigger clusters pay more; the paytable lists the values by cluster size and gem type.

Crystal Charge

Symbols removed through cascades add charge to a meter. Remove enough and the Crystal Charge fires, awarding one of four features at random:

  • Nova Blast
  • Crystal Warp
  • Light Beam
  • Chain Lightning

Each one either blows symbols off the grid or transforms them, which can set up new clusters and keep the cascade going. The help screen explains exactly what each feature does to the grid.

Three worlds, three wilds

Instead of free spins, Gemix moves you through three worlds as you play, and each world has its own wild feature. Examples include random lamp wilds, a lollipop wild that spreads, and spellbook wilds that stick in place, a version of the sticky wilds idea. The help screen sets out how progress between worlds works.

Why Gemix has no free spins, and what that means

Most modern slots save a big share of their return for one bonus round. Gemix spreads it across the base game instead: cascades, the meter and the world wilds all happen on normal paid spins. That fits its medium volatility. Payouts tend to be spread more evenly across a session than on a game where most of the value waits behind a scatter trigger.

Advantages

  • Features can appear on any spin rather than behind one trigger.
  • Medium volatility suits longer sessions on a modest budget.
  • Changing worlds keeps the game varied without a bonus round.

Drawbacks

  • No free spins round with the big multiplier moments many players look for.
  • Maximum win isn't in our checked data, so read the help screen.
  • Lower-RTP versions exist, and some casinos may run them.

Gemix RTP and the versions casinos can choose

At its top setting, the Gemix RTP is 96.83%, which is high for a slot and better than many newer releases. But Play'n GO supplies lower versions too, and the casino chooses which to run. The only figure that applies to your play is the one shown in the game's help or information screen at that site. Our answer on why RTPs differ between casinos explains the practice.

You don't need the exact lower figure to see what's at stake. Every percentage point of RTP is worth 1p per £1 staked. So a version one point lower costs an extra £1 on every £100 you spin through, and a version three points lower costs an extra £3.

What each RTP point is worth on Gemix
Total stakedExpected loss at 96.83%Extra cost per RTP point lower
£2063p20p
£100£3.17£1.00
£500£15.85£5.00

A £20 session on the Gemix slot

Medium volatility makes Gemix a reasonable fit for smaller budgets. Here's £20 on the top version, before any wins are played back through:

£20 on Gemix at 96.83% RTP
StakeSpinsExpected loss per spinExpected loss on £20
10p2000.32p63p
50p401.6p63p
£1203.2p63p

As always, the expected loss depends on how much you stake in total, not on the stake per spin. A lower stake gives you more spins, more cascades and more time to move between worlds. If you keep replaying wins, you stake more in total and the pound cost rises in step. Our page on medium and low volatility slots suggests other games with a steadier rhythm.

Gemix odds: why a 7x7 grid behaves differently

A 7x7 grid has 49 positions, so a five-gem cluster covers about a tenth of the screen (5 divided by 49 is 10.2%). That's a smaller share than an eight-symbol pay-anywhere game on a 30-position grid, where eight symbols fill just over a quarter. But clusters must be connected, while pay-anywhere symbols can be scattered. Check the help screen for which directions count as touching.

Play'n GO doesn't publish how often clusters or the Crystal Charge land, and we don't repeat third-party estimates. What can be said with certainty is that each spin is independent: a full meter on one spin doesn't make the next spin any more likely to pay. See do online slots have memory for the reasoning.

How to play Gemix online

  1. Open the help screen and note the RTP. If it's below 96.83%, the casino is running a lower version.
  2. Read the paytable for cluster values and the description of each Crystal Charge feature and world wild.
  3. Choose your stake. Online slot stakes are capped at £5 for over-25s and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds.
  4. Spin. Clusters pay and cascade automatically; each new spin needs a fresh press, as UK slots don't allow autoplay.
  5. Watch the Crystal Charge meter fill as cascades clear symbols.
  6. Check the session time and net position shown on screen and stop when you hit your limit.

Gemix and the UK slot rules

Although it looks more like a puzzle game than a fruit machine, Gemix is an online slot in law and follows every UK slot rule. The Commission's online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) caps each game cycle at £5 for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24. More detail is on our slot stake limits page.

Under the game design rules, each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, turbo and slam-stop are banned, and the game mustn't celebrate a result that returns your stake or less. You'll need to pass age and identity checks before depositing or playing the demo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Gemix?

Gemix has a top RTP of 96.83%, though lower versions exist and casinos choose which to run. At the top setting the expected loss is about 3.2p per £1 staked over the long run. Each percentage point lower adds 1p per £1. Always check the figure in the game's help screen at your casino. Our high RTP slots page lists other games near the top of the range.

Does Gemix have free spins?

No, Gemix doesn't have a free spins round. Its features all happen in the base game instead: cascading clusters fill the Crystal Charge meter, which awards one of four random features, and the game moves through three worlds, each with its own wild. That design is part of why it's rated medium volatility. For games built around a free spins round, see our guide to the free spins feature.

What is the Crystal Charge in Gemix?

The Crystal Charge is a meter that fills as cascades remove symbols from the grid. When enough symbols have been cleared, it fires one of four random features: Nova Blast, Crystal Warp, Light Beam or Chain Lightning. Each blows up or transforms symbols, which can create new clusters. The help screen explains exactly how much charge is needed. Our cascading reels page explains the mechanic behind it.

How does cluster pays work in Gemix?

Cluster pays in Gemix means a win comes from a connected group of five or more matching gems anywhere on the 7x7 grid, rather than from symbols on a payline. The winning gems disappear and new ones fall in, which can form further clusters. Larger clusters pay more, as shown in the paytable. Our cluster pays guide compares Gemix with other grid games.

Is Gemix high or medium volatility?

Gemix is rated medium volatility. Without a free spins round holding back a big share of the return, payouts are spread more evenly across normal spins than on many modern high-volatility games. That doesn't mean you'll win: the house edge still applies, and any session can finish well below average. Our slot volatility guide explains what the ratings mean.

Who makes Gemix and when was it released?

Gemix was made by Play'n GO and released in 2014. Play'n GO is an independent, privately held studio based in Växjö, Sweden, whose first gaming product dates from 1997. It's also known for Reactoonz, Book of Dead and Legacy of Dead. Read more on our Play'n GO slots page.

What is the max win on Gemix?

The maximum win for Gemix isn't in our checked data, so look at the game's help screen or paytable for the current figure. Whatever the cap, it's already built into the RTP and doesn't change the long-run cost of play. Our answer to what a slot's max win means explains how caps work and why they're a ceiling, not a target.

Is a higher RTP version of Gemix worth looking for?

Yes, if you plan to play Gemix a lot, the RTP version is worth checking, because it changes your long-run cost. Each point of RTP is worth £1 per £100 staked, so over a few hundred pounds of play the difference adds up. It won't change what happens in a single session. Our answer to whether a higher RTP slot is better covers the trade-offs.
