Gonzo's Quest slot review

The Gonzo's Quest slot is NetEnt's avalanche-reel classic: winning symbols crumble away, new ones drop in, and each consecutive avalanche lifts the multiplier from 1x up to 5x. It has a 95.97% RTP, medium volatility, 20 paylines and a 2,500x top prize, and its Free Falls push the multiplier as high as 15x.

Key takeaways

  • Gonzo's Quest uses avalanche reels: winning symbols are replaced, and each consecutive avalanche raises the multiplier.
  • In the base game the multiplier climbs from 1x to a maximum of 5x; in Free Falls the steps are 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x.
  • Three Free Fall symbols on reels 1 to 3 award 10 Free Falls, which can be retriggered.
  • At 95.97% RTP the expected cost is about 4p per £1 staked; the 2,500x cap is £250 at 10p.

About the Gonzo's Quest slot

Gonzo's Quest is one of the games NetEnt is best known for, alongside Starburst and Mega Fortune. NetEnt was founded in Stockholm in 1996 and has been part of Evolution since December 2020. It has a treasure-hunt theme, and its symbols fall and crumble rather than spin, an early and well-known example of cascading reels.

How the features work in Gonzo's Quest

The game has two linked features, and both revolve around one idea: every win you chain together is worth more than the last. The OLBG Gonzo's Quest review (opens in a new tab) describes the same structure.

Avalanche reels and the multiplier ladder

When a payline wins, the symbols in it shatter and new blocks fall from above to fill the gaps. If that produces another win, it's an avalanche, and the multiplier steps up. Each consecutive avalanche raises it, starting at 1x and topping out at 5x. As soon as an avalanche fails to produce a win, the sequence ends and the next paid spin starts again at 1x. The paytable shows each step between 1x and 5x.

Free Falls

Three Free Fall symbols on reels 1, 2 and 3 award 10 Free Falls, the game's name for its free spins. The avalanche mechanic carries on, but the ladder is far steeper: 3x, then 6x, then 9x, then 15x. Landing three more Free Fall symbols during the round retriggers it for more Free Falls. Because a 15x step multiplies whatever the avalanche pays, the bigger results in Gonzo's Quest usually come from this round.

The game has no bonus buy option in the UK; feature buy-ins haven't been offered to British players since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020. Free Falls come only from landing the symbols.

Gonzo's Quest multipliers: a worked Free Falls chain

Here's how one Free Fall could play out on a £1 stake. The base wins are invented for illustration; the multiplier steps are the game's published ladder.

Illustrative Free Fall avalanche chain (£1 stake)
AvalancheLine win before multiplierMultiplierPaid
First win£0.503x£1.50
Second in a row£0.406x£2.40
Third in a row£1.009x£9.00
Fourth in a row£0.6015x£9.00
Chain total£2.50£21.90

The same £2.50 of line wins in the base game would have been multiplied by much smaller steps, topping out at 5x. That's the whole appeal of the game in one table: long chains are rare, but when they happen during Free Falls the later links are worth several times more than the first. It's also why Gonzo's Quest is medium rather than low volatility. Our slot multipliers guide explains the different multiplier designs.

Gonzo's Quest RTP: what 95.97% costs you

The published Gonzo's Quest RTP is 95.97%, so over the long run the house keeps 4.03% of what's staked. That's slightly below many newer games, which often publish around 96.5%. The difference is about half a penny per £1, which is small per spin but adds up across a long session. Our RTP explainer shows how this average works.

StakeSpins from £20Expected loss per spinExpected loss on £20 staked
10p2000.40p81p
50p402.0p81p
£1204.0p81p

All three rows lose 81p on average because each stakes £20 in total. With medium volatility, 200 spins at 10p gives a fair sample of the base game and a reasonable chance of seeing Free Falls, though there are no promises. Twenty spins at £1 is a brief look at best. For a feel of how long a budget lasts with replayed wins, see our answer on how long £20 lasts on a slot.

Gonzo's Quest max win: 2,500x in context

The top prize is 2,500 times your stake: £250 at 10p, £2,500 at £1, £5,000 at £2 and £12,500 at the £5 stake allowed for players aged 25 and over. That's modest by modern standards, and it matches the game's medium volatility: less is held back for rare giant wins, so more of the return is paid in ordinary avalanches.

The sequels raise the ceiling a long way, and with it the volatility. If you like the original because it pays steadily, the sequels will feel quite different.

How to play Gonzo's Quest step by step

  1. Open the help screen to check the RTP (95.97%) and read the paytable for line values.
  2. Check how the multiplier ladder works in the base game and in Free Falls.
  3. Set your stake. The game uses 20 fixed paylines; UK rules cap your stake at £5 a spin if you're 25 or over and £2 if you're 18 to 24.
  4. Spin. Avalanches play out automatically, but every new spin needs a separate press because UK slots have no autoplay.
  5. Look for three Free Fall symbols on reels 1 to 3 to start 10 Free Falls.
  6. Keep an eye on the net position and session time shown on screen, and stop at your limit.

Gonzo's Quest and UK online slot rules

Gonzo's Quest is covered by every UK online slot rule. Stakes are capped at £5 per game cycle for players aged 25 and over and £2 for those aged 18 to 24, under the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab). A chain of avalanches counts as part of the same paid spin, because a game cycle runs until the stake is lost or winnings are made available. See our slot stake limits page for more.

The game design rules mean at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop, no celebration of a return that's no more than your stake, and a running display of your net spend and time. Age verification comes first, even for the demo, and credit cards can't be used to gamble.

Gonzo's Quest myths

  • "A long avalanche means Free Falls are coming." No. Each spin is random and independent of the last; our page on whether online slots have memory explains why.
  • "Raising the stake after Free Falls improves the next round." No. The RTP is the same at every stake.
  • "Older slots pay better because they've been around longer." No. The RTP is set in the game's maths and doesn't drift over time. See are new slots better than old slots.

Gonzo has also stepped off the reels. Evolution launched the live game show Gonzo's Treasure Hunt on 9 June 2021, describing it as the first online game show with a VR mode; Evolution's launch announcement (opens in a new tab) has the background.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Gonzo's Quest?

Gonzo's Quest has a published RTP of 95.97%, so the house keeps about 4p of every £1 staked over the long run. On 200 spins at 10p, that's an expected loss of about 81p, though any single session can land far from that. Check the help screen at your casino to confirm the figure. Our slot RTP guide explains how to read it.

How do avalanche multipliers work in Gonzo's Quest?

Avalanche multipliers in Gonzo's Quest rise with each consecutive win in the same spin. Winning symbols crumble, new ones fall, and each further win moves the multiplier up a step, from 1x to a maximum of 5x in the base game. When an avalanche produces no win, the multiplier resets for the next spin. Our cascading reels guide covers this mechanic across other games.

How do you trigger Free Falls in Gonzo's Quest?

You trigger Free Falls by landing three Free Fall symbols on reels 1, 2 and 3. That awards 10 Free Falls, during which the avalanche multiplier steps are 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x. Three more Free Fall symbols during the round retrigger it. Nobody can predict when they'll land. See the slot free spins feature page for how such rounds work.

What is the max win on Gonzo's Quest?

The max win on Gonzo's Quest is 2,500 times your stake. That's £250 at 10p, £2,500 at £1 and £12,500 at £5, the highest UK stake for players aged 25 and over. It's a modest cap compared with the sequels, which reach 15,825x and 21,000x. Our answer on what a max win cap means explains how caps are applied.

Is Gonzo's Quest high volatility?

No, Gonzo's Quest is rated medium volatility. Avalanches and the multiplier ladder pay often enough to keep sessions moving, while Free Falls provide the bigger moments. That makes it a reasonable middle ground for players who find high-volatility games too streaky. Our page on slot volatility compares the different ratings.

Who made Gonzo's Quest?

Gonzo's Quest was made by NetEnt, a studio founded in 1996 and based in Stockholm, Sweden. NetEnt has been owned by Evolution since December 2020 and is also known for Starburst and Mega Fortune. Its signature mechanics include avalanche reels and expanding wilds. Read more on our NetEnt slots page.

What is the difference between Gonzo's Quest and Gonzo's Quest Megaways?

The main difference is the reel system: Gonzo's Quest has five reels and 20 paylines, while Gonzo's Quest Megaways, made by Red Tiger, uses six reels with up to 117,649 ways. The Megaways version has a 95.77% default RTP, medium to high volatility and a 21,000x cap, against the original's 95.97% and 2,500x. Read our Gonzo's Quest Megaways review for its details.

Can I play Gonzo's Quest for free?

You can try a demo of Gonzo's Quest at many UK casinos, but you'll need to pass age verification first, because UK rules require it even for free play. The demo plays with credits, so you can see avalanches and Free Falls without spending money. Real-money results will differ. Our guide to free casino games and demo play explains the rules.
