Key takeaways

  • Tower Quest’s best RTP is 96.24%, but lower versions exist, so check the figure in the game before you play.
  • Medium volatility and a 500× cap make it a steadier, smaller-ceiling game than most modern slots.
  • Two separate bonus routes: an Evil Wizard card game and potion-collection free spins with multipliers and sticky wilds.
  • At 10p a spin the average cost is under 0.4p, so £20 offers a long session at the top RTP.

Tower Quest slot: the short verdict

Tower Quest is a modest, old-school video slot. It has none of the giant multipliers or six-figure ceilings of newer releases; the most it can pay is 500× the stake. In return you get a medium-volatility game where the two bonus features are reasonably accessible and the swings are gentler than in most of the high-variance titles in our slot reviews.

The headline return is 96.24%, which is good for its age. The catch is the note that comes with it: Play’n GO supplies lower RTP versions too, and casinos choose which one to run. That single setting can matter more to your wallet than any feature, so this review spends some time on it.

How the features work in Tower Quest

The tower wild

The tower symbol is the game’s wild. It substitutes for regular symbols to complete wins across the 20 fixed lines. Because the paylines are fixed, every spin covers all 20 of them and your stake is spread across the whole set.

The Evil Wizard card bonus

Three or more Evil Wizard scatters trigger a card bonus. The idea is a duel: the wizard shows a card, and you try to reveal cards that beat it. Higher cards than the wizard’s earn prizes. It is a simple, quick feature that sits outside the reels altogether, and the help screen sets out exactly how the prizes are awarded.

Potion scatters and the free spins features

The second route runs on potions. Potion symbols act as scatters that are collected towards free spins features. Those features add two extras on top of ordinary spins: multipliers, which increase the value of wins, and sticky wilds, which stay in place across spins and so keep helping to form wins. How many potions each feature needs, and how the collection behaves between sessions, is something to confirm in the paytable.

Every feature payout is already counted inside the RTP. The potions you collect, the cards you reveal and the wilds that stick are all part of the 96.24% (or lower) the game returns on average, not extra value on top of it.

How to play Tower Quest online

  1. Open Tower Quest at a UK-licensed casino and find the RTP in the game’s information screen.
  2. Pick a stake. All 20 lines are always active, so you only choose the total amount per spin.
  3. Spin. Each spin must last at least 2.5 seconds and there’s no autoplay on UK slots.
  4. Land three or more Evil Wizard scatters to play the card bonus against the wizard.
  5. Watch the potion collection build towards the free spins features with multipliers and sticky wilds.
  6. Use the on-screen net spend and time display to keep track, and stop when you hit your limit.

Tower Quest RTP: why the version matters

At its top setting Tower Quest returns 96.24%, which means a house edge of 3.76%. The phrase “lower versions exist” means some casinos may run the same game with a smaller return. The reels, symbols and features look identical; only the long-run payback changes. Wizard of Odds’ slot guide (opens in a new tab) discusses how RTP settings vary by jurisdiction and operator. UK rules require the RTP to be available to players, as the Gambling Commission’s RTS 3 on game rules and the likelihood of winning (opens in a new tab) sets out, and our page on RTP display rules explains where to look.

The table below compares the top version with a hypothetical setting two percentage points lower, purely to show how much the version can cost. It is an illustration, not a published figure for any casino.

Average cost per 500 spins: top RTP against an illustrative lower setting
StakeAt 96.24% (3.76% edge)At an illustrative 94.24% (5.76% edge)Extra cost
10p£1.88£2.88£1.00
50p£9.40£14.40£5.00
£1£18.80£28.80£10.00

In other words, playing a lower version is like paying around half as much again for the same entertainment. Our explainer on why some slots have different RTPs at different casinos covers why operators pick different settings, and whether a higher RTP slot is better looks at what the difference means in a single session.

A £20 budget on Tower Quest at 10p, 50p and £1

Medium volatility sits in the middle of the scale our slot volatility guide describes: wins come along more regularly than in a high-variance game, but they are usually smaller. Combined with a 500× ceiling, that makes Tower Quest one of the gentler games to budget for.

£20 on Tower Quest at the top RTP
StakeSpins of runwayAverage cost per spinMax win at this stake
10p2000.376p£50
50p401.88p£250
£1203.76p£500

At 10p the game’s two bonus routes have plenty of time to show up, and the expected cost of all 200 spins is only about 75p. At £1 the potential prizes are ten times larger, but 20 spins is a short session and the budget can disappear before a feature lands. Our answer on how long £20 lasts on a slot gives a fuller method.

The 500× max win in context

A 500× cap is small by modern standards. At 10p it is £50, at 50p £250, at £1 £500, at the £2 limit for 18 to 24-year-olds £1,000 and at the £5 limit for over-25s £2,500. For some players that is a plus: when the top prize is modest, more of the RTP has to be paid out through ordinary wins and features, which tends to make sessions less erratic. If you’re looking for a big ceiling, a game such as Book of Dead at 5,000× is a different proposition.

UK slot rules and Tower Quest

Tower Quest predates the current rules, but UK-licensed casinos must run it under them. That means a maximum stake of £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds, as the Commission’s online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) sets out (see our slot stake limits page), no autoplay, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no turbo or slam-stop and no celebrating a return no bigger than the stake, under the game design rules in force since 31 October 2021. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players.

Tower Quest myths and facts

  • Myth: a long potion drought means free spins are close. Fact: each spin is random and independent, as our page on independent events explains. Read the paytable to see how the collection itself works.
  • Myth: late-night play pays better. Fact: the RNG doesn’t know the time. See do slots pay out more at certain times.
  • Myth: you can read the wizard’s cards. Fact: the cards come from the game’s random number generator and the feature is already priced into the RTP; the help screen explains how the duel plays.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Tower Quest?

Tower Quest’s top RTP is 96.24%, giving a 3.76% house edge, but lower versions exist and casinos choose which to run. The figure for your casino’s copy is shown in the game’s information screen. On a 50p spin the top version costs under 2p on average; a lower setting costs more. Our explainer on RTP shows how the long-run figure is worked out and why sessions vary.

Is Tower Quest a high volatility slot?

No, Tower Quest is rated medium volatility. Wins tend to arrive more regularly than in high-variance games, but they are usually smaller, and the maximum is capped at 500× the stake. That makes it easier to plan a session around a fixed budget. Our low volatility slots list includes other games with gentler swings if you want something steadier still.

What is the max win on Tower Quest?

The maximum win on Tower Quest is 500 times your stake. That is £50 at 10p, £500 at £1 and £2,500 at the £5 UK slot limit for players aged 25 and over. It is a small ceiling by modern standards, which usually means more of the return comes from regular wins and features. Our answer on what a slot’s max win means explains the cap.

How does the Tower Quest card bonus work?

Three or more Evil Wizard scatters trigger the card bonus. The wizard shows a card and you try to reveal cards that are higher than his; beating his card wins prizes. The cards come from the random number generator, and the feature’s value is already counted in the RTP. The full prize rules are in the game’s help screen. Features like this are explained on our slot bonus rounds page.

How do you get free spins in Tower Quest?

Free spins in Tower Quest come from collecting potion scatters. The potions build towards free spins features that add multipliers and sticky wilds, which can raise the value of wins during the round. How many potions each feature needs is listed in the paytable. The features are part of the RTP, not extra value. Our pages on free spins features and sticky wilds explain the mechanics.

Who makes Tower Quest?

Tower Quest is made by Play’n GO, a privately held Swedish studio based in Växjö whose first gaming product dates from 1997. It released the game in 2015. Play’n GO is best known for Book of Dead, Reactoonz and Legacy of Dead, and for its recurring adventurer Rich Wilde. Our Play’n GO provider page lists more of its games with their published figures.

Can I play Tower Quest for free in the UK?

Some UK casinos offer demo versions of slots, but you must pass age verification first, even for free play. A demo uses the same maths as the real-money game, so it is a fair way to see how the bonus routes feel before you stake anything. Our guide to demo play and our answer on playing slots for free in the UK explain the rules.

Are Tower Quest’s paylines fixed?

Yes. Tower Quest uses 20 fixed paylines, so all 20 are active on every spin and you only choose the total stake. You can’t reduce the number of lines to lower the cost per spin, but that makes no difference to the RTP, which applies to the whole stake either way. Fixed and adjustable lines are compared in our slot paylines explainer.
