Rainbow Riches slot: what you need to know

Rainbow Riches is the game that started one of Britain's best-known slot series. It comes from Barcrest, a studio with roots in the Manchester area that began with two staff in 1968 and is now owned by Light & Wonder. Barcrest's provider history dates the Rainbow Riches series from 2006, and the original still appears in many UK lobbies, often next to its sequels.

Compared with modern slots, it is simple. Five reels, three rows, up to 20 lines and three bonus rounds, with no cascading reels, cluster pays or growing grids. That simplicity is part of its appeal, and the numbers back up its reputation as a fairly calm game: medium volatility and a modest 500x cap. You can browse its relatives in our Rainbow Riches series guide or the main slots hub.

Barcrest games are known for RTPs around 94% to 96% that can depend on stake, so the figure at your casino may not be exactly 95%. The information screen shows the version in use. SlotCatalog's Rainbow Riches listing (opens in a new tab) has a description of the features.

How the features work

Each of the three bonuses is triggered differently and plays out in its own way. None of them is a free spins round.

Rainbow Riches bonus features
FeatureHow it startsWhat happens
Road to RichesThree leprechaun bonus symbolsSpin a wheel to climb a trail of multipliers until 'Collect' appears
Wishing WellThree or more Wishing Well scattersPick for a cash multiplier
Pots of GoldThree Pots of Gold symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4A pointer stops on one of several pots to award a prize

Road to Riches

This is the series' signature bonus round. Three leprechaun symbols take you to a board shaped like a winding path. You spin a wheel, and each result moves you further along a trail of increasing multipliers. The climb continues until the wheel shows 'Collect', at which point you are paid the multiplier you have reached. The tension comes from not knowing which spin will end it.

Wishing Well

The Wishing Well symbol is a scatter, so it counts anywhere on the reels. Three or more start a pick feature: you choose from the wells on screen and are awarded a cash multiplier. The outcome is set by the game's random number generator, not by which well you pick.

Pots of Gold

Pots of Gold needs its symbol on each of the three middle reels at once. A pointer then moves around a set of pots and stops on one, which decides the prize. The published description does not list the prize values for any of the three features, so check the paytable for them.

Picks and pointers look like choices, but the result is random. No pick pattern or timing improves the return; see do online slots have memory.

Rainbow Riches paylines and the cost of a spin

Wins pay along fixed paylines, up to 20 of them, from left to right. A payline is a set path across the reels, so symbols must land in the right positions to pay, unlike the any-position counting of ways to win games.

Some versions let you choose how many lines to play; others fix all 20. If lines can be switched off, fewer lines cut the stake per spin but also cut the combinations that can pay, and the bonus symbol rules may differ. Playing fewer lines is not a way to improve your odds; it simply makes each spin smaller. Check the rules screen to see what your version allows.

Rainbow Riches RTP of 95%: a worked example

With a 95% RTP, the house edge is 5%. Suppose you play 200 spins at 20p. You stake £40 in total, and the average return is £38, so the expected cost is £2. Here is the same sum at other stakes.

Average cost of 200 spins of Rainbow Riches at 95% RTP
StakeTotal stakedAverage returnAverage cost
10p£20£19£1
20p£40£38£2
50p£100£95£5
£1£200£190£10
£2£400£380£20

A slot at 96.5% would cost £7 on the same £200 at £1, against £10 here, a difference of £3. That is the price of playing a classic with a slightly lower return. The Wizard of Odds slot machine guide (opens in a new tab) is a good primer on why slot returns vary by game and version.

Medium volatility and a £20 Rainbow Riches budget

Medium volatility means wins land at a steadier pace than in high volatility games, with fewer very long dry spells, but also a lower ceiling. For a £20 budget, that combination tends to give longer sessions.

£20 on Rainbow Riches
StakeSpins before any returnsAverage cost of those spinsFeel
10p200£1Long session; a good chance to see more than one bonus
50p40£1Moderate; bonuses may or may not come in 40 spins
£120£1Short; the result depends on one or two features

The average cost is £1 on £20 staked at every level, because it is 5% of what goes through. The stake decides how many chances you get to see the features. More on this in making a budget last.

The Rainbow Riches max win of 500x

The top prize is 500 times your stake. That is a low cap by modern standards, where many slots advertise 5,000x or more, and it goes hand in hand with the medium volatility rating. In pounds:

  • 10p stake: £50
  • 50p stake: £250
  • £1 stake: £500
  • £2 stake (the cap for 18 to 24-year-olds): £1,000
  • £5 stake (the cap for 25 and over): £2,500

A lower cap does not make the game better or worse value; that is decided by the RTP. It does mean the return is spread across more modest wins. See what a slot's max win means.

The Megaways version is the big departure: higher RTP, high volatility and a far larger cap. Pick 'n' Mix keeps the original's calm profile but lets you choose which bonuses are more likely. If you like the classic look, our Irish slots page lists more.

How to play Rainbow Riches online

  1. Set a deposit limit that matches the amount you are happy to spend.
  2. Load Rainbow Riches and read the paytable for the RTP version, line options and bonus prizes.
  3. Choose a stake within the UK cap: £5 a spin for 25 and over, £2 for 18 to 24.
  4. Spin and look for wins along the paylines from left to right.
  5. Land three leprechauns for Road to Riches, three or more wells for Wishing Well, or Pots of Gold on reels 2 to 4 for the pots feature.
  6. Check the net position on screen and stop at your planned limit, win or lose.

Rainbow Riches online and the UK slot rules

Its bright, simple look will feel familiar to anyone who knows British fruit machines, but online Rainbow Riches is regulated as an online slot, not as a gaming machine. That means the slot stake limits apply: £5 a spin for players aged 25 and over from 9 April 2025 and £2 for 18 to 24-year-olds from 21 May 2025, as set out in the Gambling Commission's stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab).

The game design rules also apply: no autoplay, no turbo or slam-stop, at least 2.5 seconds per spin, and no celebrating a return that doesn't beat your stake. For how online slots differ from the machines in pubs and arcades, read slots against fruit machines.

Is the Rainbow Riches slot right for you?

Advantages

  • Simple 5x3 layout that is easy to follow
  • Three different bonus features keep play varied
  • Medium volatility gives steadier sessions than most modern slots

Drawbacks

  • 95% RTP costs more per spin than many newer games
  • 500x cap is low if you want a big top prize
  • RTP can vary by stake or casino, so you need to check

It suits players who want a familiar, gentle slot with bonus rounds rather than free spins. If you want more volatility, the Megaways version is the obvious step up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Rainbow Riches?

Rainbow Riches has an RTP of 95.00% in our checked figures, so the average cost is 5p per £1 staked over the long run. Barcrest games often run RTPs between about 94% and 96% that depend on stake or casino, so check the information screen in the game you open. Session results will differ from the average. Our explainer on RTP against house edge shows how the two numbers relate.

What is the max win on Rainbow Riches?

The maximum win on Rainbow Riches is 500x your stake. That is £500 on a £1 spin, £1,000 at the £2 cap for players aged 18 to 24 and £2,500 at the £5 cap for players aged 25 and over. It is a low ceiling compared with many modern slots, matching the game's medium volatility. Read about max win caps to see how they are applied.

How do you trigger Road to Riches?

Road to Riches starts when three leprechaun bonus symbols land. You then spin a wheel to move along a trail of increasing multipliers, and the feature continues until the wheel shows 'Collect', when you are paid the multiplier reached. The result of each wheel spin is random. Our guide to slot bonus rounds explains how pick and trail features like this are built.

Does Rainbow Riches have free spins?

The original Rainbow Riches does not have a free spins round. Its three bonuses are Road to Riches, Wishing Well and Pots of Gold, each a separate feature with its own trigger. Later games in the series do include free spins; for example, Pick 'n' Mix lets you choose Free Spins as one of your three features. See our Rainbow Riches Pick 'n' Mix review for how it works.

Is Rainbow Riches a high or low volatility slot?

Rainbow Riches is rated medium volatility. Wins arrive at a steadier pace than in high volatility games and the long dry spells are less extreme, but the top prize is limited to 500x. That makes it a reasonable choice for a small budget if you want longer sessions. The average cost of 5p per £1 still applies. Our low volatility slots page lists other calmer games.

Who makes Rainbow Riches?

Rainbow Riches is made by Barcrest, a British studio whose roots are in the Manchester area. Barcrest began with two staff in 1968 and is now part of Light & Wonder, which bought it when the group was called Scientific Games in 2011. The Rainbow Riches series dates from 2006. Our Barcrest profile covers its history and other games.

Can I choose fewer paylines on Rainbow Riches?

Some versions of Rainbow Riches let you choose how many of its up to 20 paylines to play, and others fix all of them, so check the rules screen. Playing fewer lines lowers the cost of each spin but also reduces the combinations that can pay. It does not improve your odds or the RTP. Our guide to paylines explains how fixed and adjustable lines work.

Is online Rainbow Riches the same as a fruit machine?

No, online Rainbow Riches is regulated as an online slot, not as a gaming machine like those in pubs and arcades. It follows the UK online rules, including stake caps of £5 or £2 depending on age, a minimum 2.5 seconds per spin and no autoplay. Returns can also differ from land-based machines. See why slot RTPs are higher online than in pubs.
