Rainbow Riches Megaways slot

The Rainbow Riches Megaways slot is Barcrest's 2019 Megaways take on its best-known series: six reels plus a top row, 324 to 117,649 ways, a 96% RTP, high volatility and a 12,500x top prize. Its free spins carry an unlimited multiplier that rises with every cascade and never resets, which is where most of the big results live.

What the Rainbow Riches Megaways slot is

Barcrest launched Rainbow Riches in 2006, and the series grew into one of the most familiar names on British slots. The Megaways edition keeps the Irish luck theme but rebuilds the maths around a six-reel Megaways grid with cascades, a much bigger ceiling and high volatility.

Barcrest's roots are in the Manchester area, where it started with two staff in 1968; the arcade machine archive's Barcrest entry (opens in a new tab) keeps a record of the company's history. It has been owned by Light & Wonder since 2011, when the group was still called Scientific Games. More on our Barcrest page, and every review is on the slots hub.

Rainbow Riches Megaways against the original Rainbow Riches

The two games share a name and a theme, but they are built for very different sessions.

The Megaways edition is cheaper on average by one percentage point, which is £1 less average cost per £100 staked. But it trades the original's steadier medium volatility for a high-volatility profile with a top prize 25 times larger. If you liked the old game for its gentle pace, the Megaways version will feel very different. See the whole Rainbow Riches series for the other editions, including Pick 'n' Mix.

How the features work

Cascading wins

Winning symbols are removed after each win and new ones drop in. If the new symbols complete another win, it pays and the process repeats, so one paid spin can produce several wins. This is the standard cascading reels idea.

The Lucky Horseshoe wild

The Lucky Horseshoe is the game's wild, standing in for paying symbols to complete combinations.

Super Gems

When a Super Gem lands in the top row, every gemstone symbol on the screen transforms into a single matching gem type. Turning a mix of different gems into one kind can connect symbols across many reels at once, which in a game with tens of thousands of ways can build a large win.

Pot of Gold free spins with a multiplier that never resets

Four or more Pot of Gold scatters start the free spins. Four scatters give 12 spins, and each extra scatter adds five more. In the round, a win multiplier rises by one with every cascade and does not reset between spins, and it has no upper limit. Symbols marked +1, +2 and +3 add extra spins.

Features are described from the developer's game description, as summarised by OLBG's Rainbow Riches Megaways page (opens in a new tab). The paytable in the game sets out the exact rules.

Free spins by scatter count

41212
512 + 517
612 + 5 + 522

The multiplier is what makes the round matter. Because it rises with each cascade and never drops back, it only goes one way. A round with lots of cascades early on means every later win is multiplied by a higher figure. A round with few cascades leaves the multiplier low, and the round can pay modestly. That's the root of the game's high volatility: two rounds triggered the same way can pay very different amounts.

Rainbow Riches Megaways RTP and what you'll spend

At a 96% RTP, the edge is 4%. Expected loss is the amount staked times 4%, which keeps the sums easy.

Average cost on Rainbow Riches Megaways
Stake£20 covers (no wins)Average cost per 100 spinsAverage cost per £20 staked
10p200 spins40p80p
50p40 spins£2.0080p
£120 spins£4.0080p

Staking all £20 once costs 80p on average at any stake; the bigger stake just gets there in fewer spins. With most of the return concentrated in free spins, more spins means more chances to reach them before a budget runs out. For a full method, see our guide to cost per hour.

High volatility and the 12,500x max win

Rainbow Riches Megaways is rated high volatility, with a top prize of 12,500 times stake. In pounds: £1,250 at 10p, £6,250 at 50p, £12,500 at £1, £25,000 at £2 and £62,500 at £5. The last two figures use the UK maximum slot stakes for players aged 18–24 and 25 and over.

The maximum is a ceiling the game rarely reaches. Most sessions on a high-volatility slot finish below the average cost shown above, while a small number finish well above it.

UK rules for Rainbow Riches Megaways

This is a British-made slot, and it follows the Gambling Commission's rules like any other. The online slots stake limit guidance (opens in a new tab) caps stakes at £5 a game cycle for players aged 25 and over (since 9 April 2025) and £2 for 18–24s (since 21 May 2025). Since 31 October 2021, autoplay and turbo have been banned on slots, each spin takes at least 2.5 seconds, and a return at or below your stake can't be celebrated as a win.

There's no feature buy: since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players. Our guides to game design rules and stake limits cover the detail.

Rainbow Riches Megaways myths

  • “A high multiplier means the round is about to pay big.” The multiplier only scales wins that land; it doesn't make the next win any more likely.
  • “Lucky charms change the odds.” The theme is decoration. Results come from a certified random number generator; see random number generators.
  • “A long dry run means the Pot of Gold is due.” Spins are independent, so past results don't shift the next one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the RTP of Rainbow Riches Megaways?

Rainbow Riches Megaways has an RTP of 96%, so the house edge is 4%. That's an average cost of 40p per 100 spins at 10p and £4 per 100 spins at £1. It's slightly better than the original Rainbow Riches at 95%. Confirm the version in the game's information panel. Our RTP explainer has more.

How many free spins do you get on Rainbow Riches Megaways?

Four Pot of Gold scatters give 12 free spins, and each extra scatter adds five, so five scatters give 17 and six give 22. During the round, +1, +2 and +3 symbols can add more spins, and a multiplier rises with every cascade without resetting. See our free spins feature guide for how these rounds work.

Does the multiplier reset in Rainbow Riches Megaways free spins?

No, the free spins multiplier doesn't reset during the round. It rises by one with every cascade and has no upper limit, so it only increases as the round goes on. That's why rounds with many cascades can pay far more than rounds with few. Read about slot multipliers for more on progressive multipliers.

How much can you win on Rainbow Riches Megaways?

The max win is 12,500 times your stake: £1,250 at 10p, £12,500 at £1, and £62,500 at the £5 UK maximum for players aged 25 and over. That's 25 times the original Rainbow Riches ceiling of 500x. It's a rare outcome rather than an expectation. Our volatility guide explains why.

What do Super Gems do in Rainbow Riches Megaways?

When a Super Gem lands in the top row, all gemstone symbols on screen transform into one matching gem type. That can connect matching symbols across many reels in a single spin, which matters in a game with up to 117,649 ways. Our Megaways guide explains how the format counts ways.

Is Rainbow Riches Megaways better than the original?

It's different rather than better. The Megaways version has a higher RTP, 96% against 95%, and a much bigger 12,500x top prize, but it's high volatility, while the original is medium volatility with 20 paylines and a 500x cap. If you prefer steadier sessions, the original may suit you more. See our original Rainbow Riches review.

Who makes Rainbow Riches Megaways?

Barcrest makes Rainbow Riches Megaways, and it came out in 2019. Barcrest began in the Manchester area in 1968, launched the Rainbow Riches series in 2006 and has been owned by Light & Wonder, formerly Scientific Games, since 2011. Our Light & Wonder page covers the wider group.

Can you buy the bonus on Rainbow Riches Megaways?

No, not in Great Britain. Since a Gambling Commission warning in January 2020, feature buy-ins are not offered to British players, so the free spins can only be triggered by landing four or more Pot of Gold scatters in normal play. Our feature buy rules page explains why.
